WATCH THE FULL VIDEO 🚀 → kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2qrYYJjnN19ars Note: these Soviet space shuttles aren't copies of the US shuttles in the same way a Boeing isn't a copy of an Airbus or a Ford isn't a copy of a Dodge. It's a common airframe design with inspiration from the US shuttle program. Soviet engineers had access to unclassified NASA documentation but only used them as a reference. I've studied the Soviet program and mountains of unbiased documentation.

God, it really hurts to see them abandoned like this and slowly rotting away in such terrible conditions. I really wish one day someone would have the funds, means, and heart to move these wonderful machines to museums where they could be adored and properly cared for generations to come even if they are in a incomplete state. We already lost Buran herself, it would be a colossal shame for her siblings to silently share the same fate.

It was a little heartbreaking looking up at Ptichka and seeing her still waiting for that first mission. It's not looking good for a rescue but I haven't given up hope. But I was up on that roof and it doesn't feel strong - although I'm just an armchair engineer. The clock is ticking on saving this amazing historical spacecraft.

@@chrisluckhardt perhaps Russia could use the fact that having one staged up on a mock-rocket as a really kick-ass tourist attraction as motivation. California is already receiving a lot of donations to display Endeavor that way in the Los Angeles science center. Although my ideal way would be to have someone acquire one and bring it to the states to have them side by side. The Buran is scarcely taught about here if at all and not a whole lot of people really know about it, even if it is gutted and stripped of its technology having the shell of the shuttle itself would be a massive benefit to education as frankly I think Soviet accomplishments during the space race need to be talked about more other than just Sputnik, Yuri Gagarin, and Laika. Both sides have made valuable contributions to space exploration and I’m frankly tired of everyone boiling it down to “The USA is better because we made it to the moon and had a lasting shuttle program.”. At least that’s how it was taught in my area of the country. Not sure how it was anywhere else here.

Just beautiful and almost too good to be thrown up on KZbin which sadly these days is a waste of time to produce for. Honestly this needs a Netflix series around it. I see that open hatch on the side but no way of getting up inside this ghost shuttle. No sound apart from crunching footstops is the right approach. It's all about visual atmosphere and this has heaps. I know one of these Shuttles was destroyed in a hangar collapse and there was one that did a world tour as a tourist attraction. It was in Sydney for a time many years ago.

Your shuttle knowledge is good! The original Buran shuttle that reached orbit was destroyed in a 2002 roof collapse. The OK-GLI test shuttle was shipped from Moscow to Sydney to be put on display for the 2000 Summer Olympics. It was abandoned for a while but in 2004 was discovered in Bahrain! But by 2008 it was restored and put on display at the Technik Museum Speyer in Germany. I appreciate your support! This type of immersive ASMR production style really only works on KZbin. Subscription services like Netflix add a lot of production to their releases.

I once met a lady from Latvia who worked as an engineer at this facility she left as soon as the USSR collapsed she hated the place worked long hours.

@@chrisluckhardt from what she told me the place was rife with corruption the main reason the place shut down, engineers were mysteriously missing and being replaced by new workers due to all stealing going on, coming from Latvia to Kazakhstan was a culture shock she got very homesick.

I've seen a couple of US space shuttles up close and even then it was surreal. The enormous size of those and the Soviet shuttles is difficult to comprehend! And with these two shuttles, the surreal factor goes to 11 while staring up and thinking about the secrecy, engineering, and manufacturing that ultimately ended with them in this condition.

The Soviet shuttles aren't copies any more than a Boeing is a copy of an Airbus or a Ford is a copy of a Dodge. It's a common airframe design with inspiration from the US shuttle program. Soviet engineers had access to unclassified NASA documentation but only used them as a reference. The Soviet Buran shuttles were superior in many ways, leading to an uncrewed launch, orbit, and landing in 1988. The shuttle in the thumbnail was 95% complete before the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia inherited a prohibitively expensive program. Boris Yeltsin cancelled the program in 1993 and these shuttles were parked in 1995, forever entombed in the building like a sarcophagus.

@@KRAZEEIZATION The hangar was both cool and unsettling! It's surreal to be inside such a massive structure that's become a silent 30-year-old sarcophagus for those shuttles. A great place to start for Buran information is Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buran_programme

This video is called a “walking tour” for a reason. The full adventure episode shows why we didn’t attempt to go inside - the armed Russian security patrol arrived just after I stopped rolling these clips.
