My suggestion is to find a gen-1 crew cab and body swap it and make it a crew cab shortbed dually.. At least that is what I would do if I had the time and less projects of my own.

Look into its history, it may be from somewhere in the rust belt. If it were my decision, I'd fix her up and put her to work. You know better than I do the harder you work those old Cummins the better they run. Like you said the combination of 12 valve and manual transmission is becoming super rare and go up in value and there's good reason for that... pre def and single wire, need I say more?

This right here is exactly why I love 12 valves.... Spent all that time sitting there and as soon as you realized it was the shutoff solenoid it fired right up.. It was a little rough and stalled a few times but listen to how smooth it's running now...

Personally I’d fix it up enough to make it safe for the road,do a little engine work,new tires and put winches front and rear and make an off road recovery truck out of it. Then make videos doing off-road recovery.

@V-belt & Son : I'd probably fix her up & then sell it. It will make good money-making content for your channel, as well as keep another good ole 2nd Gen 12V alive. Appears to not be the right truck for your use, but certainly it's the right truck for someone who needs a good stout rig. Someone, like myself, who isn't too concerned with appearances or any nonsense like "one-upping" his neighbor. As I'm sure you are well aware, that truck up & roadable is worth a small fortune these days. Non-emissions trucks are especially golden. As for your complaints about the rust... Hah! That little bit of rust you have on there is laughable. Move to a rust-belt state, then complain about rust. One of my most-used daily drivers is a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie SLT, Cummins 5.9L 24V, A/T, 4x4, QC, LB. Sadly, she has basically no rockers or cab corners left. Also a soft bed, poor door bottoms, and various other body rot woes. Yep, she could use a new body... one of these days. She's been repaired in various other places, where it really matters. With only around 220K miles on her, she keeps on purring along, even with the stock, fully functional & properly maintained, 47RE automatic trans. She hauls my bumper-pull & gooseneck trailers around with ease. The 2nd Gen diesel trucks really are great, reliable rigs. I currently own several, 2 with manual & 2 with automatic transmissions. I never worry about what others say, because I've lived & breathed with these trucks for 20+ years and they've all been good to me. Best part about these older Cummins powered Dodges is their efficiency, reliability, and no emissions crap on them to cause problems or add extra expense. Ok, high time to get off my soap-box. Best wishes in whichever direction you decide to go with your "new-to-you" 1997 Dodge Ram Cummins 12V powered truck. 💪😎

I was screaming at the video to check the shutoff solenoid! You got it eventually. Also, I would have removed the air filter cover and checked to make sure there were no nests or dead animals in there. Glad you rescued the old beast. It's hard to kill a Cummins.

California's underlying problems run much deeper than simple motor vehicle pollution. They have far too many people crammed into a small space with inadequate ventilation. Plain & simple. Beyond all that, follow the money. There's big money to be made in following the trend of "going green" these days. If there weren't, it wouldn't be happening. Humanity seems to thrive on self-inflicted (created) chaos.

That is how they start to rot in NY. Then they get so bad the cab falls off the frame. 8( There is a guy midstate here that is restoring them, from southern trucks. He wants/gets $30k with a rebuilt engine. Almost makes sense now days. 8) --gary

Nothin sounds as good as a 12v especially with the stock hx35 that slight sing at idle with a full straight pipe pure music. I sold my wonderful 97 12v after 14 years (always garaged and no winters) with over 500,000 miles only because I was embarrassed at the boat ramp after having to be pulled out a few to many times. I needed a 4x4 for i been through several different trucks since I sold it, the 12v still calls to me. Here in Michigan they are ALL rotted out now. I need another with 4x4

sorry rant alert!!!! god I wish I could say that here in pa that I never see rusted out rocker panels here in a few yrs your new truck is a rust bucket then they change the laws that ya cant have rust hole anywhere or it fails state inspection but they keep tossing salt on the roads and the dam calcium salt brine pre treat 90% of the time they put it down we don't even see any weather its ridiculous. anyway nice find on the 12v. stay healthy and thanks for sharing
