We visit the abandoned Tyneham Village in Dorset. The village was evacuated in December 1943 during WWII and has been deserted ever since. The area was needed for military training but after the war ended, the villagers were not allowed to return.
We look at the row of four terraced houses including the Post Office and School House, the laundry cottages and the Rectory. Both the restored Church and School buildings are still intact and have exhibitions about the village and villagers.
Only open certain times when the army aren't practicing, see: www.tynehamopc.org.uk/visiting...

Bob, you had me in tears of laughter. At 7.30 you notice the plaster has gone on the ruined house you visited. The house has no roof, windows, not much of a wall and you notice the plaster was missing… Brilliant. Thanks for the chuckle, I needed it. Another great video.

I really enjoy watching your road trips to a destination and they do help to give an idea of what to expect. From the Stoneleigh Show on Friday we head North for a couple hours before starting our two week Scottish tour from Saturday morning. We can't wait to go now and we'll say hello to Bob and Ailene if they are there. Cheers, Dave and Soph x

Great video , we were at Tyneham 5 weeks ago but didn’t have the weather you had .The site was very quiet and we throughly enjoyed it .When we went the school room and church was close due to Covid , so it was good to be able to see inside the building .We agree with your comment about the hedges in Dorset very high , enjoy the rest of your trip .

Bob, I live in Kirkintilloch, 8 miles outside Glasgow, and where I live is the site of a former Iron Founder's, called the Lion Foundry, who produced the Red Telephone boxes up until 1984, when it changed the kiosks to perspex, resulting in the closure of the Foundry. If you come across any red boxes, look to the rear of the box, and it will be most likely stamped with Lion Foundry, Kirkintilloch 😉👍

Our company installed the solar panels and wind turbine. Whilst we were at work we had many comments that it ruins the old buildings. The reason we were asked to do this was that the church and school building were very damp during the cold months and there was a danger of the buildings rotting from inside. There used to be an old LPG heating system running heating but it was pretty old and not particularly safe and at some point it was condemned. We were asked to design a system to run a renewable energy system to run a power supply that would give a minimum heating requirement to keep the damp out of the buildings, this is what you see on the old school building. We designed the system to be as unobtrusive as possible and has been running almost three years now. Whilst we were working on the project it was clear that Tyneham village had a important historical value and we were humbled to talk to people who had a connection to the village. I know that many people feel solar panels and wind turbines have no place in the village but the buildings do need protecting from the damp and we hope that our system will do its job to keep the buildings safe for many years. This has to be one of the most interesting projects our company has worked on and we hope that our work keeps the school and church safe for many years. A truly interesting location. Interesting fact, if you go to the back of the school just by the chimney, there is a bees nest in the roof. These bees are British black bees, a protected species. We worked around the ladies, mostly they were very chilled. Due to the heat that day and us making a lot of noise, they got a bit upset and we ended up installing solar panels in bee suits. Me, being a bee keeper,it did not bother me, my colleagues were not quite so sure! It was the hottest day of the year so we glad to get the job done and get out of the suits as soon as possible. Apart from the ones that stung us, no bees were harmed. I will not forget the pain being stung in the nostril by one of the little ladies though. Bless you all and the village of Tyneham.

When we where kids, we used to put the pen nibs into a milk straw, secure with plastercine and fire them with an elastic band. There where many adorning the ceiling in some classrooms. It must of been awful for those people who had lived there all their lives to abandon their homes. Its sacrafices like this people forget.

Hi Bob.Jenny& Poppy , i wonder why they were not allowed to return? is it because they still did training there after? Also did you say the land belonged to the military?( they even did training on Formby beach found lots of ww2 hand grenades bullits etc there) Sorry don't know anything about it my Father was born that year 1943 but his Father in ww2 went to Burma then. Must have been more to it to not be able to return to there homes. Lots of signs saying unsafe buildings hmm. Great video with lots to think about :)
