I just tried watching other KZbin videos about the Minnelli mansion - wow, really makes me appreciate YOUR vlogging abilities! The others are so poorly video’d, fast sweeping of the camera, jerky movements, not staying on any one scene for more than a millisecond, and no history or narration. Keep up the good work!!

In 1980 I had been invited by Peter O’Toole and Bryan Forbes to appear at the Old Vic Company London as a cast member in Peter’s Macbeth. Following this, I relocated to Los Angeles with a general letter of introduction from Bryan. I had been given Vincent Minelli’s telephone number and duly called to see if I could arrange to meet. His wife answered and agreed, making an appointment for a few days later. When I visited, there was a film crew making a documentary about her cooking. As I was waiting to speak to her, Vincent walked down the stairs and invited me to follow him to an upstairs room. He was so pleasant and disarming, as if we were close friends. I was about 26 yrs old then. He sent for tea and it was delivered as a silver service. He sat in a large wicker peacock chair, and said, “as your British, shall I be Mother ?” ( a UK term for pouring). It was close to his birthday, as there were flowers on a low table with a card saying, “to darling daddy”. He was quite old, but not frail. His wife had told me on the telephone that when I meet him, I must understand that his memory is not very good anymore and that he may become confused. I never found that to be true. He had many of his own paintings on the walls and there were thousands of books everywhere. I did misunderstand him when he said “ do you like that painting”, indicating one on the wall. I thought he said “would you like that painting”. I didn’t answer because I thought I could make a real faux pas. He extended his hand, palm down, and showed me a ring he was wearing. He said Elizabeth Taylor had bought it in Egypt and given it to him. We spent the afternoon together in that green painted room, and later his wife joined us. I was mortified when I recently saw the house in ruins on you tube. Such wonderful people. He was from the ‘golden era’ of Hollywood, when being a star meant something. It’ll never happen again. It’s now definitely Show BUSINESS. PETER ROBERTS * you can verify The Old Vic cast on Google. PETER O’TOOLE’S Macbeth...Old Vic cast THEATRICALIA.

Historical Society should have done something since Vincent Minnelli was a big time Producer. Impressed no one really squatted in the home or stole the curtains & chairs. Someone could have easily lived in it for free as it seemed no one was watching or complaining about the house being abandoned. Weird, being a pretty big Hollywood name.

For those claiming that Liza was abusive to step mom #3, she didn’t raise Liza. She was only married to Liza’s dad for six years before his passing. He left the mansion to Liza, but asked her to take care of step mom #3. If Liza needed to sell the mansion, she was to provide step mom with suitable accommodations. Liza bought her step mom a condo. Liza did care for her for years. Step mom refused to leave. Liza had paid step mom’s bills and staff for years, until she had to sell the mansion. No one expected step mom to live to 100. I doubt that Mr. Minnelli would have burdened Liza with a quarter of a century of care for a woman that didn’t marry him until long after Liza was an adult.

Too bad Mama Chela’s Kitchen is permanently closed per 2022 Google info. Would have loved to try it out. I remember when they tore our little house down in Elysian Valley near Griffith Park. Even though our 3 bedroom 2 bathrooms front house with 3 apts in the back were built & then sold 5 yrs later in 1972 as a better replacement value wise, it was still an emotional sight to experience. It was sweet that Tom Russell, the actor Jane Russell’s brother, who was owner of the construction company, was at the site to give us moral support. He showed us a picture of all 5 of the siblings together as children with Jane being the only girl among her brothers. What memories..Thanks Jordan for sharing these memories as well with all of us who care to share them with you and precious little Jahster ..sweet dreams little one❣️

Some developers intentionally leave places seemingly abandoned to let vandals bring about destruction, thinking it garners less backlash for them destroying old historic homes for profit if they are abused properties. Owners are still the ones who did not take care, and allowed...even caused the destruction. Wealthy investors / homeowners may take the same route. Greed for more destroys a lot of our history and continues to pollute our environment through demolition rather than restoration. Tragic.

All the City Officials seem to know how to do is to tear down the famous homes of the very people that made the Movie Industry so popular. The Vincent Minelli home was once a beautiful home and now look at it. A travesty such is allowed to be done to the historical fabric of Hollywood History. A Historical Commission should be established in the City to prevent such atrocities.

It was never her home. Vincent Minelli and his wife Judy Garland divorced and he purchased this home after that divorce and he lived there. he was a long time Hollywood producer independent of his wife's own career.
@michaeldeel65364 жыл бұрын
I'm sure Minnelli never dreamed his fourth wife would live to be 100, I'll bet it cost Liza more to maintain the house than what she sold it for. That was a cruel thing for her father to do, considering that Lee was not Liza's mother. Didn't he leave his wife money, why didn't she maintain the house? If she couldn't afford to live there, she should have moved to something much cheaper to maintain. People be careful what burdens you put on your children.

THANK YOU!! It’s sad, but it’s REALITY! Currently dealing with my father and his “$2 million dollar house”…fortunately it’s in a desirable area so the property has retained value. He’s owned this home for 35 yrs and has never done any maintenance, “same carpet it came with!” 😳 The roof caved in during last winter’s storm and it sat empty for over 6 months. @MoniqueFromPlymouth4 жыл бұрын
Yes, its a horrible position to be in. I am guessing Vincente Minnelli felt his wife Lee was "not all there" and cannot make decisions for herself, which is why Liza ended up with the house and figuring out what to do with her stepmother. After reading some of the newspaper reports about Lee during the last several years of her life, I strongly suspect thats the reason why Liza was in control.

I think she was his 6th wife! I can see why he left the property to his daughter..and at the same time he was trying to make sure his wife had a place to live!
