Huge Beautiful Abandoned Mansion in New England *Left Forgotten For Decades

Historic old home built sometime around 1860-1870. Outside of Hertford Connecticut. The house would stay in the same family for nearly a hundred years with a large addition being put on the back in the early 1900’s making it the large house seen today. During the 1960’s after house was sold from the original family it was converted into apartments and then eventually forgotten a few decades later after maintenance and repairs being too costly on the old house . Sadly now going to be torn down. Just glad too have this historic old house documented in pictures and video so it won’t be forgotten totally. Thank you for watching this beautiful old house. This is such a stunner! This is where I wish we had pictures from the home’s early days. It’s really unique. I love the stain glass and the wood work. It would have been a nice home back-in-its-day... with probably that back part a addition later to added, but I do not see it as a MANSION. Its floor-to-ceiling height was short for scope of a Victorian to be higher-end and the woodwork was basic for average homes... but decent oak when natural originally. IT IS MISSING high-ceilings and arched entryways also and gotta have a main staircase to showcase a grand entry or room. The TOWER portion is what gives it that "Victorian Mansion" MYSTIC about its exterior.... its interior would have fell short by the rest of the house... Wide planked floors were just quicker to construct vs a intricate hardwood floor to show-off and doorways basic. Upstairs again basic common home look of the era.... THE THIS IS AMAZING? Well, once you see true Victorians and homes that were higher-end.... you know the difference. SORRY MY OPINION FALLS SHORT I GUESS... again... without the Tower it would be seen as just a country home in the woods. Clearly this home is yet savable.... just won't be too long its tower might be lost as leaks are a cancer to old wood quickly and more storms will take its toll.

This house was somebody's pride and joy, and the old growth floorboards upstairs are nothing shy of amazing! I'm betting the tower played double duty being a place to sit and warm your bones on a chilly sunny day, and a bright place for the kids to play on a rainy day. The stained glass above the door is amazing, and should be saved from the next vandals. The 8 pane floor to ceiling windows must have let some refreshing air in on hot summer nights, I'm sure they have all the original glass in them. Thanks Kappy, see you next time!

It started as a very old house maybe circa 1700s, that was renovated during the Victorian period (the tower was added and third floor redone). I think the floor plan may have made some sense at that time. Once the last owners got their hands on it, and turned it into a maze with all the new sheet rock walls, it became unlivable. It looks like they got themselves so confused they accidentally sealed the access to the third floor...what incompetence..

I agree that this seems older than what he says; also, in these old houses, the bedrooms connect to one another, not always to the hallways as much. We have many in my town and my ancestors' house in upstate NY had the same thing.

Wow! As for that mystery door the first thing that popped into my mind was The Twilight Zone! You never know! And that window where you paused to watch the rain come down…I could just see a woman standing there gazing out thinking how beautiful the rain was. When I look at houses like this, my brain sees all the potential. Someone (in a perfectly wonderful world) should get a group of investors, carpenters, plumbers, restoration people etc… and rehab what can be rehabbed. The top of the tower could be recreated, trim, interior furnishings like the wood cook stove, tub, wood stove , could be pulled out and either rehabbed or sold, and take the house down to the bare bones. Save for the floors! Make it new again and either sell it for more than anyone could afford or make it a homeless shelter, a health clinic, whatever and start giving back to this world instead of everyone taking everything they possibly can. There are so many filthy rich people who wouldn’t even notice if they parted with a million dollars. But that would never happen so I’ll just keep dreaming! Excellent find Kappy!

I watch a lot of these videos, as I find abandoned buildings totally fascinating. It always saddens me to see once nice things simply get left behind to deteriorate...i.e. appliances, stoves, beds, etc. Always makes me wonder what the lives of the people who lived there were like and what happened to make them all turn their backs on it and walk away.

Tower portion gives it that must-have-been-a-mansion mystic ... was not a Victorian Mansion vibe once inside. No high-ceilings or arched entryways... no grand staircase and wide-plank floors were just cheaper to build vs more intricate hardwood floors. Upstairs bathroom clearly farmhouse grade by the woodwork. Worth saving.... just was never a Mansion. Large home with a addition yes and probably housed a family with many children.

When I see beautiful old homes like this one, I imagine what it must have been like during its glory days. I think of the people who lived there, the children who played in those rooms, food that was cooked in the kitchens. I think of the people who used those knobs to open the doors, all those people who went up and down those stairs. I am an old fool, a dreamer. Sigh!!!Thank you.

You have such a lovable personality, so I feel comfortable giving a bit of advice. Sometimes your written words use the adverb “too” rather than “to”. To help you decide if “too” is correct, exchange it with the word “also” or the word “very”. If either of those two words make sense in the sentence, then “too” is correct. I love it! I think I spotted what might have been the bottom of the staircase that leads up to the top floor. Go back and check at 12:28 and see what you think. Wow, so many remodeling projects really confused the layout of this house. I think it was used as a business at one time, the kitchen was pretty fancy and not everyone requires a 6 burner stove for everyday use. Pretty cool place, though. The floor boards were amazing. Thanks, Kappy

Took a few guys to get that jetted tub up that tiny staricase. Makes one wonder how they ever did it. Yep, as a retired mechanical engineer, I'd love to see a glimpse of the basement systems, heating boiler, etc. At one time, I'm sure a very large family lived there, and their energy bills to heat it in winter must have been unreal !!!!!

I loved some of the rooms of this amazing house which I don't think has been abandoned that long judging by the bathroom fitments, spot lights, and the cooker. The original oven was a beast of a thing but interesting to see. I also loved the staircase but it looked like a secondary one to me and I expected a much grander main one, perhaps ripped out in an attempt to modernise? I reckon the staircase to the top floor could have been behind the boarded area of the bathroom, just a thought. And the tower rooms with all those tall windows were just lovely. I really enjoyed this house, something about it, not sure what.

Very interesting house, I'm assuming lightning damage on the turret, I wonder if that's why they left. Definitely wasn't that long ago judging by some of the newer patio door and newer washer and dryer. Strange how the attic access and maybe the basement access was closed off. A good majority of the roof wasn't that bad, not new but not very old.

I live on the east coast. My husband is a builder. My son is a builder. My grandson is an architect. My grand daughter is a designer. My older daughter works in Insurance. My youngest daughter is a farmer/special needs teacher. We rehabbed a house that was stand on a map in 1754. We lived in it for 30 plus years. My oldest daughter owns and lives in it now. These old homes can be beautiful when rehabbed. I wish we could get a look and talk to the owners if it looked doable. We restored to a usable modern home with a age appropriate look.

You can't get floorboards like that anymore. That was all fresh cut from a sawmill from old growth trees. Water is truly the enemy of wood. Just look at all the water damage in the house. The house is probably beyond repair but the stained-glass windows and the timber flooring would be worth a small fortune to salvage.

Kappy There is a home in Bethel Conn, That is Identical to this home, The only difference is the added on section to the Right of the main House, Its funny the Architect that built these homes , Did a few of them, There,s also one on Osborne st in Danbury Conn. And the Graffiti Is because People of today did not instill appreciation, of anything, In there children, They did not earn anything they have Just given to them, If you don't work Hard for something It means nothing, That's why

I have to admit that some of the house was wonderful and some was a little confusing. Odd rooms with odd angles. I liked that one wood stove in there. It looks like it might be soapstone around the outside. The house obviously has an attic and more than likely a basement but they must have taken out any access to them. The staircase didn’t match the house at all and looks like a back stairs since it was so curved and kind of narrow for a main staircase. Such a confusing place but some nice features.
