Abandoned Winn Dixie & Shopping Center - Eden, NC. Closed many years ago, Winn Dixie is grocery store chain that exited the North Carolina market in 2005 due to bankruptcy. As a result of its departure from this particular location, its toll on the shopping center eventually caused the other businesses to leave as well leaving this entire space unoccupied.

I worked at Winn Dixie not long before they closed down. Was a Revco beside it before dollar general. Also had a small tobacco store and before drifters was there it was pizza station. They had a mean buffet on Wednesday night. Sad to see it all in ruins now.

The Dollar General actually moved down the street that is behind the Winn Dixie. The DG was there until about 4 or 5 months ago. The Dollar General in the old Family video opened about a year and a half ago. I live five minutes from here and pass it everyday. The Family video closed up and Dollar general opened within a couples months later. My wife and her father worked at this Winn Dixie. She said that the Winn Dixie took up the store you see and the DG at one time.

Ice Cream freezers like the Haagen Daz one are typically given to the business by the ice cream distributors to use while they have the account. It's actually hard to get them to come get their machine when you're done with it.

I grew up across the street from this Win Dixie. It was built around 1980 with Win Dixie on the left, originally Revco Drug Store (known today as CVS)to the right. Then Dollar General years later. To the right of that was a Video Store, then a hair cutting place. Then far right was originally Pizza Station which was the place to eat in Eden until they closed approximately early 2000's. Then Drifters (a bar opening from about 2010 to 2019. Dollar General was the last business to leave in 2020 to open new store a 1/2 mile up the road on Hey 135. Taking a right out the back parking lot. I was always told that the businesses left because the shopping center owners would not fix the major water leaks in the roof of all the stores and the damaged parking lot. They never even fix 1 pot hole as they happened. I remember going in Winn Dixie walking around buckets in the floor catching water when it rains. I think when everything starting closing mostly Winn Dixie was pretty devastating to this end of Eden. I hope this has shed some light on what has happened.

Winn Dixie is headquartered here in Jacksonville, fl. I remember when they looked like that in the 80's. I can't imagine that place closed as recently as the 2000's. They would've heavily remodeled it in the mid-90's. Also, I would assume that Dollar General was originally an Eckerd's

I used to shop at the Winn Dixie in Fernandina Beach but they would not remove the sale signs after items went off sale, so when you checked-out some of your items would ring up at regular price, then you had to go to the customer service counter and get refunds, which after time got to be a real hassle. I guess its an ok store if you want to pay regular price for everything you buy.

We still have Winn Dixie here in Louisiana, but a lot of them have closed. I haven't seen a Winn Dixie like this one in quite a long time because in the 1990s, a lot of the old school Winn Dixies like this one were closed and replaced with the larger Marketplace style stores. I don't think I've seen that sort of signage inside of a Winn Dixie since I was a kid. We had a bad flood here in 2016 which damaged 2 Winn Dixie stores and sadly, the company decided not to reopen them, replacing them a chain called Shoppers Value. Nice to see the buildings being put back into use, but I liked Winn Dixie more than Shoppers Value. I plan to keep shopping at Winn Dixie as long as we still have them, but I fear they will eventually will succumb to pressure from Super WalMart, Walmart Neighborhood Market, and Super Target. Thanks for video, so we can remember these old stores.

I have worked for Winn-Dixie for 8 years. I worked at the old Mandeville store 1446 in Louisiana. It closed in April 2018 because of the bankruptcy. It was abandoned with all the fixtures inside until February 2020 when grafe auction sold everything. Some work has ben done inside, but it still seems to be abandoned. It would look something like this now, but the sign has been gone.

Winn Dixie is still around heavily in Florida and has scattered stores in a few other southern states. They are based in Jacksonville Fl under corporate name Southeastern Grocers. Correct they pulled back their footprint from North and South Carolina around 2005 I believe. It is very odd they never unbranded that building and took down the signage.

Southeastern Grocers acquired both Winn-Dixie and Bi-Lo in the mid-2000's. Before that, the chain had opened new stores in Virginia. When I went to find one in 2004, the almost-new Marketplace store in Fredericksburg had closed the week before and an older store in Richmond was into a liquidation sale. SE Grocers started closing or selling the Bi-Lo stores in 2022, leaving W-D, Harvey's and Fresco y Mas in Florida, Georgia and parts of Alabama and Mississippi. The cooler in the DG belonged to the vendor, Nestle', who apparently forgot to go pick it up.

Alot of fond memories in that Winn Dixie! My Aunt worked at this one while my Mom worked at the one in Reidsville before they both went into banking. My grandmother would always take us grocery shopping to visit my aunt at work and I always enjoyed swiping a few M&M cookies from the sampler at the Bakery. Mark Martin was driving the Winn Dixie car at the time! When the Army moved me to Phenix City, Alabama I was so excited to shop at a Winn Dixie again! These days I shop at Piggly Wiggly because it has that old Winn Dixie feel.

Awesome find and amazing to see that intact of a Winn Dixie sign that even seemed untouched by nature and time. The lettering inside the Winn Dixie looked what 1960's, 1970's? I remember lettering like that in the early 80s but it wasn't new then... I also love how there was still a payphone, well at least the box for one, complete with the holder for a phonebook. The whole center had a early to mid 70's, maybe very early 80's vibe to it...but that's just guessing.

There was a "Pizza Station" where the bar is/was back in the 80s thru 90s that was great. I went to the local high school (MHS) and lived in the city with my family for about 20 years. Moved there in the late 70s from Greensboro due to my father landing a maintenance mechanic job at Miller Brewing Company. He retired before Coors came in with over 20 years there. He draws one hell of a pension check, almost as much as he was making every month while he worked. Companies abandoned the pension plans for 401K contribution and stock shares which isn't anywhere close to a good pension. Oh well! Loved that town at one time, still do - just from afar.

Wallie! This property is owned by the same company that owns Pennrose Mall. The Malachite Group. Their portfolio is listed online. It’s full of similar old and rundown structures! 😢😢😢

I'm guessing the Dollar General was a drug store at some point, possibly Eckerd or Revco. It was common for them to co-locate with Winn-Dixie.

I grew up in the Carolinas, and distinctly remember the Revco's next to grocery stores like Bi-Lo and Winn-Dixie having those high up windows in front.

I live in Eden NC and I use to work at that Winn Dixie when I was in school. Of course the grocery store did go out of business jus like the rest of the stores except Dollar General. They had to build a new store and move due to mold coming into their store from the Winn Dixie store. The new Dollar General is jus a half mile up the road

They built a brand new Winn Dixie one town over from us in 1994-1995 IIRC (I was very very young) and my family shopped there almost exclusively. It shut down around 2005 and sat vacant till it was completely renovated (down to the walls and roof) to a Food Lion around 2011.

That Dollar General was probably a former drug store like Revco or Eckerd Drugs. They were always in those strip malls next to supermarkets back in the 80's.

Man that Winn Dixie looks 1970s lol we had them here in Louisville Kentucky for years then in the 1990s like started to disappear. "The Beef People" now that brings memories.

That was a cool find. Wouldn’t it be nice to have all the Winn Dixie lettering at home and be able to light them inside a man cave. The shopping has potential find the right renters and take care of the premises.

Be careful around that particular Dollar General! Black mold was growing inside the building causing sickness to employees.

Dollar General just left 6 months ago and are probably still under contract with owners is the reason the power is still on would be my guess.
