This is an excellent memory jogger for me as I attended the opening of the "new" Gladesville Bridge. I also crossed the old Gladesville Bridge on its last day of regular vehicular traffic. The traffic was horrendous with only 1 lane in each direction and during morning and afternoon peak traffic would be stopped to allow both lanes to be used in order to keep the traffic moving for short but frequent periods of time. There were many theories at the time as to the strength of the seemingly thin support pillars and the impending collapse of the new bridge which some are still waiting for after 60 years. Excellent video Phil, well done 👍👏

I used to live in Gladesville & walked on the Gladesville Bridge many times as my ex girlfriend lived in Drummoyne back in the late '80's, the western side of the bridge has a very narrow pathway but the city side is quite wide.

I can still remember going to see the new bridge from the old road in 1964 - I was almost 7 so one of my earliest memories!!

Other abandoned or old places I know of in that area are Gladesville hospital. The old buildings behind Callan park are nice. Hunters hill has lots of old buildings too, but not abandoned. Opposite of Birkenhead point across the water, there's a shell of the old pump house of the Balmain power station. This is near where my apartment is at.

Great video! I’ve driven over the new Gladeville bridge plenty of times and kept meaning to take a look at the area underneath and surroundings

Great clip. I was finishing primary school just as this opened. As a kid I was more impressed with it than the Harbour Bridge, which looked 'old' to me, while this was so modern and gracile in construction. I can just remember being driven over the old bridge. Did not know about the 'Five Dock' name thing until now, though.

If you are ever interested in a road trip, the Iron Cove bridge has a similar story. It too had the same look of the old Gladesville bridge and was replaced around the same time due to similar traffic flow issues, and the old abutments remain aswell but much closer (underneath the duplication bridge). By the way it's interesting to use Maps SIX and use the 1943 layer to make a comparison to how it looks now. Anyway where the old Iron Cove bridge differs to the old Gladesville bridge is that it's 9 bridge spans were re-used and still in use as three seperate bridges in the Forbes NSW area. I checked them out a few years back

Piers from the old bridge were still visible in the late 1960s . The pictures of the arch before the road deck was added are reminiscent of the Sydney Harbour Bridge . Also , Newcastle has its own version of the Gladesville Bridge in the form of the Stockton Bridge .

Great video: If you're ever up near Booker Bay near Woy Woy, the RIP Bridge is very similar in design to the Gladesville Bridge.

I live around the corner on Wrights Rd! Some of the retirees around the area tell me of a few placards up the lane way opposite the first sign you filmed. Showing where Drummoyne House was located. One of many historic houses demolished to make way for the new bridge and Vic rd. Also opposite that sign under the bridge there are also remains of a stone staircase - however I think this was put in for bridge workers but I could be wrong. Thanks for the vid! Always a fan.

Great video. Would have been even better if you had included a little about St Malo as it was a pivotal demolition for this project. That was abandoned!

The old bridge did not have a footpath, pedestrians wanting to cross were allowed to ride the tram for free. Don't know if that arrangement continued with the buses after they stupidly closed the tramways.

5:33 The honour of opening the bridge should've gone to Premier John Renshaw instead of a no-account pommie Royal!
