Yorktown was a good ship with a good crew. She went into Midway already wounded and did very well, her airmen helped sink two of the Japanese carriers. She and her crew did their country proud!

Today is June 7th, 2020, and I recall the Yorktown and her heroic crew on this day she went down. God bless the men still living and the dead and their families !

i stayed on the yorktown for a week and a half when i was younger with the scouts and traces of battle and bullet impacts can be found all over(she’s of course repaired most). staying in the barracks where the men slept was sobering. the ship creeks like she’s still in the pacific but she’s mored up. not to mention the talking you’ll hear from rooms that are empty or down the hallways sounds like a group of people but you’ll never find em.

Oh shit. I stayed on the CV 10 in Charlestown, SC too when I was in the scouts (Troop 133 from Clermont, FL). I remember going in the early 2000s. It was around the same time the the civil war era sub the Hunley was found. We went to Fort Sumter as well. What year did you go?

Great narrative, but many of the film shots show the U.S.S. Lexington being abandoned during the May, 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea. That photo of the whale boat picking up survivors is in the famous U.S. Navy official shot of the sinking Lexington. Many of the film shots of men in the water are of Naval aviators, not crewmen. Also shows a photo of Navy aviators at the rear of a plane on a carrier deck. Photo was taken during the 1944 Battle of the Philippine Sea, also known as the " Great Marianas' Turkey Shoot" for the number of Japanese planes downed by our Naval carrier aviators. The plane is an F6F-3 Grumman Hellcat. The Hellcat didn't enter service until late 1943.

My dad was a CPO on the Yorktown. He was a few that stayed on deck while shooting at the zeros. My dad on the last few months before he passed away told me he jumped down on the front right side gun and was shooting at the zeros. Now many years later my wife tells me (she had read on line)that they didn't know there were still men on the ship if it wasn't fir that guy shooting at the zeros. Thanks to all in the military past, present and future. My mom was a marine and ordered parts for the corsair and my dad worked on them on the Yorktown. My dad wasn't supposed to be on the Yorktown but the ship he was supposed to be on wasn't ready when pearl harbor got hit. Well I'll stop talking. Too much history in my family to keep going on on your post.

Japanese carriers were mad about the loss. decided to go attack whatever ship they could. They went all in on a second wave but attacked the Yorktown which they previously thought was disabled. Pretty intense battle

Were the 1000s on deckworkers put on the USS Yorktown to rush repairs before midway, still on the ship before battle? Is that why the Japanese thought the Yorktown which was hit at first, wasnt the same carrier they hit at first?

@@turtleiguess5240 --Yes. She entered service in 1943 and participated in a number of campaigns till the end of the war, and she also took part in the Koean War. If you wish to know more, I recommend you to the detailed article on CV-10 that is in Wikipedia online. Enjoy and best wishes. I see there is a movie about her on YT that is called "The Fighting Lady".

That would be a (CV-10) class not the original that sunk in Midway which was a (CV-5) class aircraft carrier. The (C-10) was likely named after Yorktown in honor of it's service during Midway. Hope this cleared things up a bit!

--I would just ad that it is from the Essex (CV 9) class that were so numerous in WW II. The CV 5 Yorktown as the lead ship of her won class that included Enterprise and the original Hornet.
