It's incredible how Richard Halsey Best was able to strike and destroy two aircraft carriers in the same day. Had he'd not been forced out of active combat service following this battle due to medical complications, there's no doubt in my mind he would have achieved many more great military feats in his life.

I urge you to have a real relationship with Him by repenting of your sins and turning to Him and surrendering your heart to Him completely because He desires a relationship with you and only by being born again by the Holy Spirit you are able to enter heaven because Jesus is the only way to eternal life. There were so many crazy coincidences that lead to the devastation of the Kidō Butai, and if only a single one of those coincidences didn't happen the outcome could have been vastly different. Mad respect to the airmen who fought over Midway that day. This battle was the turning point of the war in the Pacific. I highly recommend checking out a 3 part series by "Montemayor" who goes into full detail of all the events that led up to the American victory at Midway.

Indeed, this video looks really cool but it's a very oversimplified version of the Battle of Midway, no Story of the USS Nautilus that tried to hit a Japanese ship first but missed and got spotted, resulting in Arashi breaking off from formation to deal with the Nautilus, then trying to catch the Kido Butai which is then spotted in the video, Japanese that have a quarrel within their ranks to switch their aircraft for anti-ship battle or keep up with attacking Midway as they realize US Carriers are on the area much faster than anticipated, resulting in many armaments left unattended and prime to attack, Japanese bomber following the returning of US aircraft so they can track Yorktown or the incredible feat of Yorktown crew that patch the ship really fast that the 2nd Japanese attack think she is a different ship.

The CAP was overwhelmed. The Zero's light ammo load doomed the Japanese
@RusskiBlusski
@RusskiBlusski Жыл бұрын
@@jamesricker3997 They had enough CAP up where that shouldn't have been an issue, but they were over zealous and focused in on the first wave of torpedo bombers. Which resulted in them dropping altitude to dogfight. So when the two waves of divebombers appeared, there was not enough time for the fighters to regain altitude to intercept. I won't deny that the ammo load wasn't an issue, however it was definitely not the reason the two waves of divebombers were unopposed.

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.

One thing that I think cannot be forgotten about this battle: while several waves of US aircraft attacked the fleet and were destroyed with negligible damage done, every one of them kept the Japanese from being able to rearm and launch their next wave, and each one forced Zeros to dive down and pursue. By the time the critical bomber groups arrived, the Zero air cover were out of position near the water and low on fuel and ammo.

Too often the comments sections on WW2 historical videos devolve into which of the allies did more, who really won the war, whose army or navy was better, etc. Sad that we all cannot appreciate everyone’s contribution to the ultimate victory. Another incredible video. Something that I am reminded of when ever I hear about Midway is a quote I read from Admiral Yamamoto. He said to the Imperial Japanese Command that he could guarantee victory after victory for the first six months following the attack on Pearl Harbor, but saw only uncertainty after that. Midway happened just three days shy of the six months Yamamoto predicted. Timing on history is often the deciding factor between victory and defeat, and this one battle proves just that.

I remember learning about him when I first knew about the Battle of Midway. The battle is spoken very little about--let alone this single attack. However, with one strike and 8 bombs, the Americans were able to wipe out the entire Kido Butai and turn the tide of the war. Even now I still have trouble understanding how the Americans were able to pull a victory with such a disadvantage and an overwhelming number of attackers. Truly a great and magnificent battle that should be remembered forever. Love these videos and keep up the great work!!

The success of the dive bombers at Midway was a stroke of wild fortune; the defending fighters were so busy defending the carriers and ripping apart torpedo bombers, they didn't have time to react or climb to meet the dive bombers. Plus, the reason the bombs were so effective is that the Japanese were in the middle of rearming and refueling their fighters from the ground assault on Midway Island, so when the bombs detonated, the explosions were exacerbated by all the munitions and fuel active on the flight deck. Edit: What else made this battle so nuts is that the Japanese kept running into issues; there was the dilemma of the fighters returning from the island ground assault needing to refuel and rearm vs the defending fighters also needing to land for those reasons, and there's also the Japanese pilots mistakenly thinking they had sunk the Yorktown and erroneously assuming they had been damaging multiple carriers. Really, the Battle of Midway is an excellent showing of why Japanese military doctrine was inevitably going to lose to American military doctrine.

As others may have said it, it's actually the valiant sacrifice of the pilots in the failed Devastator attacks (and other piecemeal attacks from the land based B-26s and B-17s) who made the biggest difference. Their attacks kept Nagumo distracted and unable to launch his aircraft. Not to mention they're the ones who took the brunt from the Zeroes so when the dive bombers attacked they faced almost no resistance because the fighters are already low on fuel and ammunition and needed to land.

In the 2019 Midway movie the scene where the junior officers placed the US force exactly where they historically were during a map exercise really happened along with the senior officers saying the Americans would never be there and to do the exercise again.

Something to think about as far as the Battle of Midway goes: Akagi took what was essentially one well placed bomb it, and was rendered a total loss Yorktown took 3 bombs, was repaired, then took 2 torpedos and still didn’t sink. Had the submarine I-168 not come later and struck her with 4 more torpedoes she probably would have survived. Goes to show- the superiority of American carrier design and damage control vs the Japanese counterparts

Awesome video!!! Also, the air group that USS YORKTOWN (CV5) went into battle with all came from the USS SARATOGA (CV3). SARATOGA, being the torpedo magnet that she was early in the war, SARATOGA ate another torpedo before Midway and was sent to the West Coast for repairs. Her air group (Torpedo 3, Bombing 3, Scouting 3, Fighting 3) was flown to Hawai'i to await orders. YORKTOWNs air group was devastated during the Battle of the Coral Sea. YORKTOWN, being worked on and readied for the upcoming Midway battle, had no air group. Everything that the US had to replenish YORKTOWNs air group were very inexperienced crews and a collection of various aircraft types. Someone finally remembered that SARATOGAs air group was just sitting around and available and, being probably one of the most combat experienced air groups available after making numerous island raids early in the war along with ENTERPRISE, decision was made to place that air group onto YORKTOWN. This decision allowed YORKTOWN to go into battle with an experienced/intact air group. Japanese doctrine did NOT allow for the transfer of air groups between their various carriers, thus eliminating a possible 5th carrier from the Midway strike group. The carriers SHOKAKU & ZUIKAKU were at Coral Sea. SHOKAKU was severely damaged but had a relatively intact air group whilst ZUIKAKU was undamaged but suffered severe losses to her air group. BOTH ships were sent back to home waters for rest/repairs/refit. Had the Japanese transferred SHOKAKUs air group to ZUIKAKU and been at Midway, perhaps the battle may have turned out differently. Also, during the American dive bombers flight to the Japanese carriers - believe it was McClusky's flight - a few of the dive bombers actually dropped their bombs while arming them by using the new electronic arming devices recently installed into the aircraft. Thes electronic arming devices were supposed to take the arming and bomb dropping duties away from the pilot so that he could better concentrate on flying the aircraft. However, these devices had a notorious glitch in the system and that was not worked out before the battle. Something like 6 bombs were prematurely dropped en route to the Japanese fleet and McClusky (being one of the aircraft that dropped) ordered to go into battle with the manual arming/dropping devices and ordered the other aircraft without bombs to at least go through the motion of diving and strafe the enemy ships.

I know SB2C's were better, faster, better diving speed, larger bomb load but i really think that the real workhorse of the pacific for the usa was the SBD. Slow but deadly. Shown himself at the Coral Sea, Midway, Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz. All the important battles of 42. Hell, they even raided Truk Lagoon in 43, only being partially replaced in 44. Honestly, best diver of ww2. And about the devestator... That had to go. The Avenger was just faster, more manouverable and better. And it just looks 100 times better.

SB2Cs generally carried a lighter bomb load than SBDs. They also had a laundry list of problems
@Slava_Yarmolenko
@Slava_Yarmolenko Жыл бұрын
SBD was a good dive bomber, but by 1942 it (similar to pretty much all other US naval aircraft) was pertty obsolete. Yes, they had their good days, but helldivers were better because they could carry more bombs, had more powerful guns, could carry a torpedo and were much more durable. But when we talk about SB2C we have to keep in mind that F6F and F4U were found to be capable of delivering comparable bombload, but much more versatile in self-defence. And the #1 dive bomber is pretty much undisputabely Ju.87. That aircraft was so successful at its golden times that even 80 years later when the plane in the movie dives down, it emitts the sirene noise (LotR's nazguls were a reference to the stuka dive bombers because Tolkien lived in london during Battle of Britain). No need to say that that noise was emitted only by Ju.87 in a dive.

@@sirboomsalot4902 I guess it depends on variant. Although you might be right. Also we don't know what was the average load and the recommended one. So it means that on average SBD's might have been loaded with less bombs than SB2C's and the other way around.
@martonpapp269
@martonpapp269 Жыл бұрын
@@Slava_Yarmolenko don't get me wrong, Helldivers were good. But I think the SBD was the dive bomber that really won the war while the SB2C's only gave the final blows at the Philippian Sea, Leyte Gulf and off Okinawa. Obviously it was better cause it was newer but I still like the Slow But Deadly more as I think it just did more work. I am not sure about the durability thought.

For the curious- The Japanese destroyer at the beginning was the Arashi; it had detached from the formation to attack an American submarine that tried to torpedo one of the battleships; by chance the dive bombers found Arashi on her way back from concluding her hunt for the submarine (it had gotten away)
