Video/segment idea: a history of your stickers! When I first started purchasing from Goulet it was all ink art. Now we have gorgeous digital art related to fountain pens. Who are your artists and what made you decide to start putting stickers as freebies? Is there a process to making new stickers? Or do they come as organically as they have in this podcast?

Drew and Brian, re: music, I get distracted very easily by music while working. But if I loop a single song over and over, the lack of novelty keeps me focused. My greatest accomplishment in grad school was writing a 10-page paper in 12 hours, looping Toto's "Africa" for at least 8 of those hours.

Hello Brian and Drew. Glad to see you back. Hope Rachel Is recovering from her illness. I wanted to give you a shout out about the New Yankee Workshop and This Old House. My father was a lifelong woodworker, and spent innumerable hours in his shop, but when he was in the house, Norm's shows were his favorite entertainment. Even with all Dad's knowledge, he loved picking up tips from Norm. Very worthwhile skills and television. Thanks for giving credit where it's due.

Regarding a $20 limit on fountain pens, when I first discovered fountain pens (it was the 60s and I was eight), $20 would've been considered an obscene amount to pay for a fountain pen. Years later, a friend was asking for a pen recommendation to begin journaling, and I recommended the Pilot Falcon and sent her the Goulet Pens link. She was flabbergasted, "Are they REALLY that expensive?!?" I explained to her, as gently as possible, that the Falcon was actually one of the more economical pens available. I then sent her a link to the Namiki Emperor. (I know. That was mean.)

On the topic of pen cleaning in between new inks: The people not doing it do not seem to be limited to those using cartridge pens. When I get attic-found, piston-filling vintage pens, I usually spend a good while cleaning them -- flushing out layers of blue, then black, sometimes green, back to blue... until the water finally turns clear.

Possible analogy for a feed: If you're eating a burger, the bun is the feed, the patty is the nib, and the toppings are the ink. Bun/Feed: You just need the bun/feed to do its job and make sure the entire thing is usable/edible. You'll rarely buy a burger for the bread, unless it's really something weird, like, say, an ebonite feed or an overfeed. You'll notice if the bread is terrible though, or if it can't support the patty and the toppings. Patty/Nib: The main event. This is where most of the experience will come from. In any given restaurant, there's usually a set number of patty options (normal, quarter pound, double patty). If it's a specialist burger joint, maybe there's an impossible patty, or an angus patty, or a buffalo patty. Generally, you'll find your preferred size/option and stick with it, but you can swap it out for something crazy if it's available. Toppings/Ink: This enhances the experience, and changes more often. You can make do with just sauce and cheese on most days, but sometimes you'll want bacon. If you're really going for it on a certain day, you can have blue cheese or crazy things like peanut butter or mac and cheese. However, all the toppings in the world won't be able to mask a terrible patty.

Missed the Pencast last week, but glad to see Brian is feeling better. Welcome back! I have to thank Drew for giving a nod to shimmers and sheens being usable with finer nibs. I just don't care for broader nibs and love shimmers, and find the results to be dazzling in extra fine nibs. This is definitely where the feed comes into play, as that feed is what determines how much ink is delivered to the page; the nib just determines how widely it's spreads over the page. But a page full of fine lines that shimmer or sheen is just.... *chef kiss*. (I use Midori almost exclusively, so that may also have something to do with it.) I love the FWP names. Raindrop Parade sounds like a shady grey, leaning warm. It reminds me of sunshowers, where the rain falls while the sun is shining.

I have dozens of pens from the $10-25 dollar range... mostly from China and India (a few from Japan and Europe) and some of them are easily among my favorite pens, even today. If we expanded to a $30 limit, I'd have no problem being a fountain pen hobbyist. It's fun looking for deals and looking for good quality, inexpensive pens. For me they don't need to be expensive.

I really appreciate y'all's attention to detail and I just want to gush over the nib nook a bit. I was impressed with the ease I could compare different nibs and admire how you use the same paper and ink for each test. It gave me an idea: what if people could upload photos of swatches they've done that change other variables? I'm really new to fountain pens so I could be off base, but I think it could be cool and extremely useful! I know that it would be -way- too much for one person to do, but I bet that when a lot of us get a new pen or ink or paper, there is some swatching that happens. I also have a bit of an odd grip that I found out recently is a lateral quadrupod grip, holding very close to the nib. I can't really change it up because I have some joint issues and developed my grip to keep from putting inverse pressure on my finger joints. My pen fluctuates from about 75-85 degrees from the paper as I write (I used a protractor to measure 🤣) so it made me think that for a database like this, what would be good factors to include and filter on? I'd be interested to see if there are other weird writers out there like me and what they think of different ink/pen/nib/paper combos! Is something like this something you've considered doing before? I'd also be pretty interested to see what different inks look like on recycled paper since I have a lot of that in my life =]. Thanks again, y'all have helped me so much! Edit: For Drew - I also pick my nails/skin and the game changer for me was acrylic nails. They make my nails too dull to pick and I’ve always had weak nails and it also makes them super useful! I use the kiara dip system since manicures are expensive. Idk if acrylic would work for your brother but they do make clear 😊

I still have the chess board we played with so many years ago, and it’s something I will always cherish. Since you both seem to like games of various sorts… Hypothetical ?: If you had to pick between digital games (example Nintendo, X Box, etc.) or non digital games (cards, board games, kid games, etc.) which would you pick? So I recently had to give up all hobbies and literally all unnecessary spending. I mean ALL. It breaks my heart to not be able to spend even a cent on fountain pens. I mean no ink, no nothing. I have to say that Brian’s response to the question about $20 toward pens made me very emotional. I have to find a way to still enjoy the hobby even without the $20. Brian made me feel like maybe I can do it. I would like to say this will pass and I will be able to save up again as Drew suggested, but I find that highly unlikely for at least the next five years. I will use the pens I have and the ink I have to journal my way through what has been a horrific and yet glorious change of lifestyle experience.

A Question - Frequently it is recommended that fountain pens with metal innerds are not suitable for eye-dropper filling, which is a reasonable suggestion. So, do fountain pens which have vacuum filling system, and therefore have metal components get around this issue? Is stainless steel usage here the ideal metal for use in fountain pen mechanisms the saving grace?

I've been enjoying the podcast and I always find it interesting when Brian and Drew talk about a favourite nib size. I definitely prefer a finer nib when I am writing a lot but I always bring my 3 pen case when I go out and know that I will be writing a bit. In the case, I carry 3 pens with different nib sizes and ink colors. For me, that is one of the benefits of having several pens. It allows me to simply have titles to my note or emphasize different points easily. I am not as disciplined as Drew, I often have more than 3 pens inked so that when I am home I have significantly more choices and these choices include variations in nib sizes and inks.😊

I have to share this with you guys. I bought a TWSBI Eco with a medium nib a few weeks ago because I was curious about the hype and I am notoriously late to fountain pen parties! I am a long distance truck driver as my full time job so I'm away from home weeks at a time. I filled my Eco with Jacques Herbin Gris Orage (Stormy Grey with shimmer). After three weeks of not using my pen, it started straight away, no issues whatsoever. I was absolutely stunned as most of my collection hard start. Do I put this down to the quality of the ink or the pen, or is this a match made in heaven? Many thanks.

Been some comments about the $20 limit! I'll add mine, anyway. 😁 I often feel excluded because my budget per pen IS $10-$20. I often get told to go next level or go gold. I have gold! I don't like! 😆 And I do have a lot of pens and I enjoy them! 😂 Maybe because I'm more into the inks part of the hobby and I like hard steel nibs best? Or I'm always thinking about how I need to replace the pen in case I lose it. So if it's over $20, I quickly lose interest.

You can widen the channels on the feed with razer blade, or craft knife for more flow. But start by cleaning with toothbrush or something. Chrisrap52 and Tartiff both have some videos on this. Ebonite feed can be an upgrade, but you might have to modify it to fit. Mostly only needed for deep flexing where the nirmal/standard feed might not be able to keep up. Might also help with some thicker ink, where they have a lot of pigment, or shimmer.

Another reason to clean pens when changing ink - bottled ink is 'open' and you can possibly introduce contaminants to the pen, even if it is a tiny spec of dust. Cartridges are safer, within brands, to just plug a new one in and keep going. Although it is still a good idea to flush the nibs to remove possible paper fibers.

I have an S.T. Dupont Line D Large, and agree that you can't appreciate it until you have it in your hand. I was skeptical of the brand, since pens aren't their primary business, but the aquamarine guilloche Line D (which unfortunately Goulet doesn't carry) was so beautiful that I decided to check it out. I had some buyer's remorse after purchase, but it dissipated as soon as I had it in my hand. I love a hefty pen, the fit and finish are stellar, and it is a beautifully consistent, wet writer.

Omg I was also that excited about Buttered Popcorn. 😂I only have a sample, but there's just something about that name with the color; it's so satisfying. The match is perfect. So I get it!

Regarding exceptions to your daily nib preference; I WAS inking a 1.1mm and fine in three ink colours as a daily carry (6 pens), BUT now I have found Lamy 1.1mm stubs can do wonderful Reverse Writing, so problem and daily carry is halved. Darker the ink the better. I would still struggle doing a "Drew" and having one ink, three pens.

On the topic of feeds, I remember back in the day when Conklin were making/sourcing their own flex nibs, before they were made by Jowo, the feed that accompanied them was specifically designed to keep up with the flex. I bought one of the last of those and although I've changed the nib to a Jowo EF, I love how gushy that feed is.

So, if my TWSBI 580 stubs are too wet for me, could I put the stub nib on the feed for a 580 medium nib for reduced flow? All my nibs are stubs so I’d have to buy a replacement medium nib unit…

I want an extra fine gusher. Which pens would you recommend. I'll sort out the right ink.

YES! Diy shows that simply teach are so wonderful and wholesome to watch. I get nostalgic about the cooking shows where they simply cooked a recipe from start to finish, like Julia Child, or even the more modern ones they used to have on the Food Network. If anyone here has more tips for good DIY shows that can be watched on KZbin I'd love to hear about it - was there ever a show like this about sewing? And indeed, don't ever feel the need to appeal to the algorithm or do what other KZbinrs do: just talking about pens is what gives me a much-needed break from all that!

I had to use fountain pen in middle school. Exclusively wrote with erasabe/washable bluem, for school. Had packs of the same exact brand, same exact ink. And just spent years plopping new cartridges in pens, up until they get "abandoned" for a little while during vacations. Then, I just put the section/nib unit in water or run it on the sink... Loosely dry it and *plop a cartridge of the same boring blue ink* because it had to write for school and homework

You guys should look into bone conduction headphones! I use Shokz open run pro in the office so I can listen to music and still hear what's going on around me. They're so much more comfortable than earbuds, I can wear them all day without a problem.

Thanks so much for answering my music question guys!! Drew, I’m also a big Euro power metal fan so that was amazing to hear 😁 Would totally recommend the Persona 5 and Undertale soundtracks if you’re a game music fan; very different genres but both fantastic in my opinion. Love the Pencast so much!!

Question I wonder about: why in reviews and product descriptions do people rarely talk about cap seals? I think this is one of my top priorities in pens but it’s hard to find comparisons when I’m looking into a new pen I haven’t tried, because people don’t really talk about it. But a bad cap seal with a pen that dries up quickly will be the thing that kills my affection for a pen instantly

I enjoyed the pen spotlight. I bought a fine nibbed ST DuPont pen that actually wrote a bit dry but I spent $25 to have it tuned and it's one of my favorites now. It's beautiful and in my opinion has higher quality materials and workmanship than competitors in the same price range.

I have upgraded the feed only one pen in my life, so far. I added an ebonite feed, made by the Nib Factory, to my Pilot Custom 823 with a FA nib. The flow now is perfection. I know the Nib Factory does nibs for various pens. They are wizards when it comes to feeds.

The next Two Truths and a Lie segment should be “Two Inks and a Pie” based on the Monteverde Sweet Life inks, there’s plenty of room for confusion in the world of sweet treats.

Brian we watched all the New Yankee Workshop shows. Norm's carpentry talent on This Old House was fantastic. I still watch This Old House. Drew This Old House still runs on PBS. They rehab two houses each year, usually one out of town and one in New England. Right now they are in Newburyport, MA.
