What a great video about tearing down a solar inverter. I have one that is rated for 7kw and am waiting for cooler weather to enjoy the tear down. I found it on garbage day in my area. It is really amazing as to what people throw out!

I took the cover of and had a quick look but it looks like it is new. I am thinking that maybe they upgraded to a higher output model? It is a cheap chinese brand and costs about $1200 Australian dollars. After I saw your video I subscribed!

Very nice! Love how you tear ir apart brand new outta the box, exactly what I'd do. Isn't it so awesome when you find such well built tech for next to nothing or free?! Reminds me of the brand spankin new APC Symmetra UPS I got, I couldn't believe it... Price I paid would not of even covered the freight cost. Donno how some of these entities do it... Someone somewhere has got to be taking the loss... But its always so fun! That is, when it is these large scale inverters and UPS's. The domestic stuff is not that fun. I had an oppty to pick up 96kW 3Ph outdoor solar inverters for $850 each... I just didn't have the room though, they were HUGE! Would of made for a hell of a tear down video. That is ofc if I would of ever gotten around to editing and posting. I'm horrible at that... Just like your inverter in the video, most of the larger inverters and UPCs I have collected all use TO-220 discreet, and quite modular-ish. Perhaps for easy factory repair or in-field service. I don't mind it though, makes for heaps of useful components, heatsinks, etc as well as scalable future projects. Thanks for sharing and hope you keep getting these awesome finds *^^*

It is a financial jump through hoops, sure someone is loosing money somewhere, but the losses are tax-deductibles. "A write-down is an accounting term for the reduction in the book value of an asset when its fair market value (FMV) has fallen below the carrying book value, and thus become an impaired asset." $850 is still a steep price for something seemingly unuseful and super heavy ;)

It's good to see your teardown habit indeed has a limit. As someone on 60Hz however, I seem to have a different take on its disposition. :) ...(Didn't find firmware itself on the website for "adjusting" the frequency trip limit)

It is a pretty huge project and very costly if you go out and buy the parts from new. It took me 4 years to complete in hobby time, well also with a lot of travel for work and having kids meanwhile, but still :) All my advice is written down in my DRSSTC design guide: kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/drsstc-design-guide/ Best of luck with your project, please do sign up at www.highvoltageforum.net and show your building progress and get help on the project :)

Hy, I have the bigger version, 27KW one. Beefy stuff! All caps are MKP. I think on the output stages are the same. Unfortunately I have an issue with the control board. ABB has some good Inverters, previous they had issue with the relays. It's interesting that on mine I don't remember the copper cooling fins on the relay board for the traces.... have to check it. If by any chances you will take it apart, I'm interested in the communication board and the input box.

Thank you for that correction, I mistook them for being beefy test points, so it is really PCB heat sinks? The inverter will not get chopped up just yet :)

Hi thanks for the video. Have you located the manual for this beast? ABB don't do solar I hear. My TRIO is giving an error which might be just a menu item fix, but I also want to see the WLAN connection to save me standing in the hot sun trying to read it. These highly reflective LCD panels are a problem, at least it has a backlight I suppose if daytime is not too bright. I'm in Western Australia - Gingin ** Re manual - I found it at manuals.lib I can see that I have a yellow light and an E004 error "BULK 0V" (over-voltage DC-DC circuit) voltage on the which could be an internal component or overvoltage on the external grid. - E004 - Bulk OV - Yellow LED “Bulk” over-voltage (DC-DC circuit): Error inside the inverter. The alarm is raised when the voltage at the heads of the bulk capacitors exceeds the Over Voltage threshold (internal unchangeable threshold). • The alarm may be triggered by causes external to the inverter: - An excessive input voltage can be recorded as a condition for bulk over voltage. In this case it is advisable to check the inverter's input voltage and should this value be close to the input OV threshold, review the configuration of the photovoltaic generator. - Excessive grid voltage could cause the bulk voltage to rise in uncontrolled fashion with a consequent protection intervention and hence generation of the alarm. In these cases the alarm is transitory and the inverter automatically restarts - The alarm may be triggered by causes inside the inverter and in this case it is necessary to contact customer assistance.

again, they make a medium power inverter but use toy transistors. it makes more sense to use high power switching and keep gate drives short. i just built a 20kw single phase unit and it weighs no more than 5kg with water cooling.

Smaller switches are used to reach the strict goal on inverter efficiency. That is most likely the only reason.

In order to combat cheap inverters coming in from China, that only has a CE stamp for sale purposes and not to actually document that the product is living up to the CE mark, a positive-list was made. To get on the positive-list the manufacturer had to send in documentation within a certain time frame on previous projects/products and they would get accepted as previous installed base. Those that did not do it in time are now subject to a rigorous paper work and it was simply cheaper to throw out the old inverters and only do paper work for the new types/products.
