Much as I adore Agnetha and am one of her biggest fans, these two were never destined for happiness because, from the start, they had different ambitions. At the end Ulvaeus was not ready to give up what he saw as the glamour of touring and performing and the whole being famous thing. Agnetha wanted to take time to be a mum to the children Ulvaeus had selfishly fathered. You only have to look at the picture above to see the abject sadness on Agnetha's face. She deserved so much more that him, especially when one considers it was her ( and to a lesser extent Ann Frid) and her fantastic vocal skills that made him rich and famous. Lots of people can write catchy tunes, only a few can truly bring them to life. Take the climax of "I am the Tiger "on Arrival. I'd be thrilled if you could name just one other who could end that track with the nuclear explosion that was Agnetha's B5. I'm not sure whether Agnetha is one of Sweden's national treasures. If she isn't, she darn well should be.

It's not rocket science. Bjorn's focus was ABBA, even after the kids were born. Agnetha's focus was the kids more than ABBA after they were born. That's where they grew apart.

@@watchman1178 Bjorn was kind of shy, like Agnetha. I guess that's where the attraction started. Although, when they were on stage, much like Agnetha, you wouldn't necessarily guess Bjorn was shy. When they performed live, he and Frida were kind of the leaders on stage...addressing the crowd between songs, etc. Not really a cold person, but, definitely the business-oriented one in ABBA...ie. focused on their success and their popularity in the world, and very much in tune to where and when they toured, made TV and fan appearances, etc.

After spending a last christmas together, Agnetha moved out with the kids on 25th Dec. 1978. Björn met his future wife Lena at a New Year's Eve Party in 1978. Björn and Agnetha were officially divorced in early summer of 1980. At his time Agnetha's boyfriend was a wealthy Swedish business man.

Lulu Lulu...I think some of us are right and some of us are wrong when speculating about why Bjorn and Agnetha split. This video is no help at all. I'm slowly but surely coming to a conclusion that no one really knows, not even Bjorn, not Agnetha, and not their children. Nobody knows. It just happened, no real reason, it just happens, same as other couples. I firmly believe, though, that Bjorn and Agnetha still, to this day, love each other...and for me, that's the saving grace of the whole fucking mess.

"But I was a fool, playing by the rules.." She didn't have the affair, he did. People forget, he didn't go for a dolly bird. As people constantly say, the new girlfriend wasn't a looker. He went for a mental connection. They're still together, all these years later. He must have been in emotional pain to leave Agnetha. Don't forget, she didn't really have a stable relationship after the divorce. She might have been really difficult to live with.

Probably, good sex, giving him whatever he wanted, not complaining for anything, letting him do whatever he wanted without asking, probably she raised the kids herself while he worked, and many other things we don´t know. Like a smiling slave, giving him everything he wanted so that he couldn´t leave her, making him comfortable all of the time, may be even making herself and her needs invisible. That´s how I feel it is. Because, I believe he is so selfish. He didn´t even care about his own children when they were on tour. Only Agnetha felt guilty for leaving them. He was always about job and making money. And, probably, Agnetha may be hard to live with, as you say.

For so many years he's been saying this, but finally in 2013 on the BBC documentary Agnetha: ABBA & After, he admits (not in so many words) that a big part of what caused the divorce was his ambition over a more balanced life Agnetha wanted. He sounded regretful. I doubt he wanted to divorce her, so when she finally decided to leave him, he didn't take it too easily. Divorce was never about falling out of love with each other. Too bad success was more important to him than his marriage.

The crazy thing about that, though, is how could he aggressively pursue his career without her? You can't go on tour without your lead singer. Benny & Bjorn may have created the music, but Agnetha was the most important band member to the public.

Björn will have had a relationship with Lena long before the separation from Agnetha. This is always the case when the separation is pronounced, the men are already emotionally far away from the wife / partner. You switch "warm". What remains is a deeply hurt wife, sad children and the future together is buried. In Agnetha Björn had a beautiful, talented and charismatic partner, 2 sweet children, success .. But even that was not enough. Agnetha was the voice of ABBA.

No me cabe duda que Bjorn quería mucho a A gnetha...no había más que ver como la miraba cuando cantaba y como habla de ella cuando lo hace,con gran nostalgia.Lo que pasa en un matrimonio nunca se puede saber, pero debió de haber algo muy difícil de llevar.En ocasiones la convivencia ; las circunstancias vitales que se afrontan de distinta manera por ambas partes; problemas individuales que impiden un funcionamiento adecuado; o evolución personal en distinta dirección, impide a una pareja salir adelante.En el caso de ellos, por su fama y tipo de vida de entonces, posiblemente estarían sujetos a más variables externas difíciles de manejar. A veces todas estas variables impiden continuar juntos.

Opino lo mismo, desde alguien me dijo que Bijorn le fue infiel en el fondo no me lo crei, asi que me puse a buscar en el internet toda clase de informacion y entrevista y doccumentales para saber que reallmente paso y en todos lados se ve que ell la queria y queria saalvar el matrimonio pero que ella era una persona dificil dee convivir! My Ex had one boyfriend right after the next, she always had one waiting for her power source. Like a chain. She treated me like dirt because she thought one of these new boy friends would take her in. But when she realized they were using her, she went back to another guy she thought would take her in, but one problem here, this guy don’t have a job. He’s still in high school. ¿En algún momento pueden pensar en algo más que el físico de Agnetha? Ella era adicta y tenía un montón de afecciones mentales con las que Björn no pudo lidiar, además de que él estaba muy metido en ABBA, casi sin tener tiempo para su familia, ósea, Agnetha y sus niños. Pensemos también que esto fue una decisión compartida, se seguían amando, pero sabían que no daba para más, tanto por los problemas de Agnetha como el poco manejo de Björn. Así que, ¿podrían darse el tiempo de pensar en que ambos sufrían?, si algo no da no da, incluso teniendo la cara de Agnetha.

Agnetha, as beautiful and talented as she was and still is was horrible at picking the men in her life. Luckily, she raised some very good children. As for Bjorn, he was able to parlay a failed marriage into a stunning career which to me sounds like one of the most selfish endeavors I’ve ever heard of. I’m wondering how much of this is cultural. They certainly gave the fans a great ride but good lord what about commitment to family. Any man who has been with beautiful women will tell you they are like any other woman but even more insecure than most. Just because she is gorgeous doesn’t mean she is without internal flaws. Only fools and weak men believe that kind of foolishness . Even by Swedish standards Agnetha is pretty and elegant but not all that much exceedingly beautiful. She has class, talent, style and passion. I’m a huge fan of her voice and look. In the end they are both only human and we all have no idea what went down behind closed doors but I’m 99% sure that BJÖRN was a real donkeys rear orifice at the time. A little man with Napoleon complex enjoying his conquests as a popular musician often does. Agnetha seems to have a fondness of little blonde men who say the right things to her.

Whatever happened…bottomline…the relationship wasn’t working. They wanted different things. Fame and fortune comes with great benefits but also a price to pay. However, from some other interviews I’ve seen of Agnetha and the other ABBA members, they all are doing well now in their 70’s. The recent reunion shows despite the failed personal romantic relationships they have moved on as adult people do-well most of the time-and have respect for each other as people and professionals. Agnetha is an introvert, she I believe lives with her son’s family, loves horses, and her privacy. And she’s aged well. Still a beautiful woman with an equally beautiful voice. Financially comfortable. Doesn’t sound like such a bad life!

Duftstab Kerze that is the beta male paradox though.. they get turned on and inspired by free men with purpose who go off to far lands etc... eg a dedicated mountaineer such as Rheinhold Messner. But these guys are hard to pin down in a marriage, and sometimes have unsteady incomes. So they sometimes end up settling for a guy with a “ stable” job (does any such thing really exist anymore ?). But they get bored by his lack of zest for life, his poor performance in bed. So they end up cheating on him or splitting after a few years, taking his kids, house, and sometimes sanity. Hence the current MGTOW movement ... ( men going their own way) which is essentially a marriage strike by men. Its actually recommended by Dr Helen Smith in her book “ men on strike” .

they all got caught up in all the hype, and money was easily made in the music industry, in that era. Times have changed since. More support and better medical systems in place. Divorce is the last resource if things don't work out in the end. Both weren't compatible, so why should any marriage be forced to stick together, when its not a happy place to be in... its a way of finding a better solution for the sake of the children and still stay friends... happy people, happy life.

I attended a Midsommarsfesten dance in Sweden, when Agnetha and Anni-Frid sang with their earlier band. We went out to dinner with band after the dance. Agnetha and I ended up sitting at a separate table so she could practice her English with and she helped me continue learning Swedish. She was a very sweet young lady, but not well educated - and thus could only talk about music. The interesting thing is that she told me that her dream was to sing on Broadway. I saw her a couple of more times, when they were still in that part of Sweden, but then their band moved on to other gigs. My understanding from current "histories" on ABBA is that two months later, Bjorn and Benny invited the two women to join them in a group, named (English translation) Bjorn, Benny and the Swedish Girls. I know enough, but will not mention out of respect for Agnetha's privacy, that much of what Bjorn says and is now is the official early history of ABBA is fiction. I have photos of the dance and then Agnetha/AnniFrid after dinner, but there is no way to post them.

I've read somewhere that when Björn and Lena married in 1980, Agnetha was so depressed that she spent the whole night crying in a hotel room.

@@Kapritchosa The point I was trying to make, is that he divorced Agnetha, completely disregarding that they had a 1-year-old (Christian) and a 5-year-old (Linda). I was in no way implying that he should mention his children's names in the interview. I believe that when you have a «family», that you should put their interests first, and NOT yours. And, whatever Björn did, Agnetha mentioned in her autobiography, entitled, «As I Am», as «unmentionable», that led to their break-up.

The documentary did not put her in a good light: marrying afterwords her pathetic stalker, makes her look lost and confused... I am just an outside observer (after decades) of a very successful very complicated relationship. Would love to talk in person about this, chat will probably never resolve it. With help from her good friend, and well-known Swedish journalist, Brita Ahman. Reading the book was amazing, and it seemed as if Agnetha herself were telling me personally, about her whole life story, her feelings and thoughts on so many things. Very different from an «unauthorised» biography written by someone who did not her her personally. Also, very different from «tabloid style» critiques, and other «trash journalism». Although she is a «superstar» in her own right, as are the other members of the group, as I read her book, I could see her on a real «human» level, and I realised that she is very down-to-earth.
