This song needs some historical contextualisation. Cassandra, according to the ancient Greek mythology, was a priestess, a prophetess, she was a daughter of the king of Troy. The gods had granted her a gift, the power to foresee the future. The problem was that the future ahead for the city and for everybody was all full of doom, death and destruction. She was warning her fellow citizens of all impending tragedies; but they didn't want to listen to her and considered her like a hoodoo, a jinx. According to some versions she was sentenced to exile. Still today In many languages "to be a Cassandra" means to be an unheard prophet of doom. This song represents the first time in history, after more than 2000 years, when someone attempts to apologise to Cassandra. This recording is part of their last public appearance, on the German TV after their split; where they performed 3 songs, including the one you reacted to before: " The Day Before You Came"

@@daviean Yes, "The Day Before You Came" is really amazing, weird, one in a kind. I suggested it to you because in your previous comment there was the official video of TDBYC wrongly connected with another ABBA song. I suggest you to look at that version, the song with its official video. That is really interesting too. The way I always interpreted TDBYC is something like: "I don't remember the day before I knew you exactly; but I can tell you almost everything I did on that day, because my days were all the same, all boring and dull. But that was "before you came" That means now my life has changed because I know you. It's a way to tell happiness indirectly. Just talking about how boring my life used to be "before".

Thank you for these new reactions to ABBA Sundays This video is from a 1982 German TV Special with three songs: "The day before you arrived", "Cassandra" "Under Attack" It was one of ABBA's last television performances, on November 11, 1982, coincidentally the day of my 25th birthday. (40 years passed, today I am 65) "Cassandra" is a B-side to one of ABBA's two latest singles, with "The day before You came" on the A-side. In my personal opinion I like "Cassandra" better, it's beautiful, with a great Frida on lead vocals and a powerful chorus with Agnetha ABBA had great lyrics, some more sad or melancholic, but this is inspired by a prophetess from ancient mythology in Greece guitarist Björn has written lyrics with other historical themes, already with "Fernando" in 1976 (thinking about the Mexican revolution) as with "The Piper" in 1980 (based on The Pied Piper of Hamelin) since last week you did the first song of this express show (The day before you came) and today the second (Cassandra) It would be great if you end the sequence with the last one next time: "Under attack" (ABBA's last official single, until their 2021 comeback) Thanks again for the new reaction I wish you a great weekend My best regards from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷 South America P.S.: It's fantastic if you could see the new Voyage concerts .. enjoy it, all I read about it is a unique experience that should be lived

For me this is a sophisticated version of an old classic fisherman song. You can even hear the seagulls (in synth form)

Are you aware that ABBA made a comeback in November, 2021 and released a full 10 song album after a 40 year hiatus? The new songs are all great. They sound more matured, but still sound like ABBA. It's the GREATEST musical comeback of all time, with all members now in their 70s. But they haven't lost any of their magic. Check the new songs in ABBA's new album called Voyage, currently selling at 2.5 million and still counting.😍👍

Hi Amigo! This is a beautiful song in waltz rhythm(on the chorus part). If you want to react to the other song in this presentation ("Under attack"), I recommend that you better watch the official video of it. I think it can be much more interesting... Take care my friend and see you very soon, on another ABBA's Sunday. Love from Chile 🇨🇱👍

Hola hermano chileno! In this situation I share the suggestion of "Under attack", but although I love the official video, I prefer that He follow this performance on TV, because it is the last joint presence of ABBA (just today December 11, exactly 40 years ago, was the last time ABBA performed for the BBC, via satellite from Stockholm) hug from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷

The city of Troy has fallen. As they did back then, the conquerors have taken any women they want as sex slaves. Since Cassandra is a daughter of the king, the high king of the invaders have claimed her. He is taking her with him back to Mykene. The god Apollo had had the hots for Casandra, and gifted her with the power to see the future. But she spurned him, which you should never do to a Greek god, and he cursed her so that nobody believes her predictions. She knew that the city would fall. Nobody believed her. And she knows (but the narrator of this song does not) that the high king's wife will murder both him and Cassandra when they get to Mykene.

Abba was rumoured to have a little 'security problem' while filming this show in Germany Nov.82.Even though they had been warned about the fan's reaction and enthusiasm.Studio audience wasreally 'crazy in love' while welcoming back the band.In the last song 'Underattack' you may catch in the end young fans rushing on stage 'love-attacking' them and one boy even kissing Frida while Agnetha'got lost' in the crowded scene.Twas Abba's final year as a band.

"The day before you came" has no chorus... maybe that's why you found it strange. BTW, this is not "live", it's lip sync. Very common on TV back in the day.

Sorry I just get weak at this traditional folk song (out of charts in the 80s), but these transcription/bridges and the text that just grabs me, perhaps I may misinterpret. Bjorn was inspired by THE CASSANDRA of the ancient Greek history and made his story out of it (a little the same as by I Can BeThat Woman/Tammy Wynette+everyone's dealings with addiction or Our Last Summer ....). I haven't learn latin and greek mythology and my English isn't good enough to explain the background in only a few words. Thanks to Wikipedia: "Cassandra or Kassandra in Greek mythology was a Trojan priestess dedicated to the god Apollo and fated by him to utter true prophecies but never to be believed. In modern usage her name is employed as a rhetorical device to indicate a person whose accurate prophecies, generally of impending disaster, are not believed ...."; for everyone interested. This last appearance on German TV with the three very different songs touches me to this day, also expresses somehow the at least 10 years of hard work (released 3-4 and an album almost every year as was customary at the time) and ups and downs privately and above all in the press (special in UK and apparently partly also in Sweden), although they immediately threw themselves back into work as soloists. Then finally came the well-deserved break and coming to terms with the sucessful, but fast-lived years. I hope I haven't bored you. Have a good next week everyone😉✌

Hey Urs thank you and going by the Wikipedia definition it does sound and seem like this song is about some kind of disaster/tragedy so I can see the story makes a little more sense what the song is about based on the concept. This was very clever shows how intelligent ABBA was with their thought process of creating music and poetry

Could you please do a comparison video of who sang it best between Dennis Le Gree singing his cover version of The Circle of life during the Sing offs of the Voice Senior two years ago vs the defending champion Christian Guardino again singing his cover version of The Circle of life on Disney night on American Idol this year 2022?Hopefully, Dennis Le Gree should be a tough challenger for the defending champion Christian Guardino. I am really excited and looking forward to hearing your opinion as to which of these two singers sang this song the best and why(Christian Guardino or Dennis Le Gree). As you will see as in the previous comparison video here the plane field is once again level. No one as the decisive advantage over the other as they are both preforming in their respective singing competitions.
