One of the most meaningful, albeit misunderstood songs by abba. Even my old folks think this is a love song about a lad named Fernando. This song makes me think of my grandfather who fought in WW2. "I was so afraid Fernando,...none of us were prepared to die...I am not ashamed to say the roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry...they were shining there for...liberty". So poignant and powerful.

When he was on his deathbed, I played this for him, and while he was sick and exhausted, he cried but smiled when he heard what was playing and did his best to sing the words despite being short of breath. This song reminds of my grandparents. They both fought in the Mexican Revolution from 1910 to 1920. They were separated in the conflict when the train they were on was blown up. My grandmother and grandfather happened to be on opposite ends of the train when the bomb went off. Each thought the other was dead. Two years later they walked past each other on a train platform. They were married for 75 years.

Abba wrote three versions of Fernando. The first was in Swedish and told the story of lost love. The second was English and told the story of two veterans in the 1910 Mexican Civil War. The third was in Spanish. My father loved this song. He fought as an infantryman on the front lines in three wars. This song makes me cry for him.

I had the great experience of meeting and conversing with Panch Villa's widow. It was in 1971 in Chihuahua City. She was 79 years old. Her name was Maria de la Luz Corral viuda de Villa. She had a powerful voice, joyful and full of confidence. It was memory that I treasure. In her house she had the car in which Panco was assassinated, full of bullet holes.

After Pancho's death, there were four wives that wanted the big 50 room house. By then the fellow she spared was president of Mexico. Somehow he had heard of this conversation and he granted the house to her.

@NextWorld Thank you, Next, but my part was tiny. These other accounts are just in the historical record. But to share another bit, Pancho and his men were gathering money from business owners and individuals to fund their military operations. That's where he met Luz in her mother's little store. He liked her looks, but most of all, he liked that she was articulate. She was 18 years old, and he proposed marriage. She was the second wife. It is said that he had more than forty "wives." But Luz had a special distinction. She is the only wife who had a marriage certificate. They went to the Catholic priest, who said that Pancho would need to do confession. Panco said that he had committed so many sins and done so many bad deeds that the priest would simply not have time enough to hear it all. The priest then said, "Well, then let's just skip it," and the marriage ceremony proceeded as scheduled. Luz became an important part of the revolution. At one point, for her safety, she went to Cuba briefly, then spent about two years in San Antonio, TX. She spoke to me in good English, which presumably she learned in TX.

This reminded me of my grandfather. He was a medical doctor in the SS medical corp. He was imprisoned because he was treating Soviet and German soldiers without distinction. He was a man who saw it all. A bit of humanity in a ruthless war. I always wished I could be half brave as he was.

Nowadays metalheads and hard rock fans are open about their love & respect for ABBA. Lemmy in Motörhead and Ritchie Blackmore were both big ABBA fanatics and were open about it, even back in the late 70s. Any rocker that likes ABBA should check out the band Ghost, they are can fill an arena headling these days so it's likely that many of you know of their music. Their discography has so much ABBA inspired pop sorcery mixed with an tradtional late 70s/early 80s heavy metal/hard rock and a hundred other sounds from different eras. Their newest album is recorded at ABBA's old studio and you can hear the same piano as used in Money, Money, Money on two songs on that Ghost album. Spillways is one of those two. Highly recommend. Cheers mate!

I love Abba, 40 years ago l met my husband and was the first time I ever heard an Abba song. I have been hooked ever since. Fernando has a special meaning. He escaped communism, Romania and when he made it to America he knew he would come to Las Vegas, we worked for the same hotel and casino. The first time he felt real love, that is when he saw me. He told himself that he was going to marry me and spend the rest of his life with me, then he introduced himself and we have been together 40 years. He was on a battle field, people hunting him and his father over many countries, they made it to Italy, then after another year he found a sponsor to America. I was truly blessed when he told me who he was, a very handsome man. I am surprised he didn't have someone else but l guess life brought us half way around the world, we met and have spent our life together. God blessed us both.

ABBA has lots of these beautiful classical style songs in their catalogue. ABBA is known for their big wall-of-sound, big unison (third voice) songs, but their most beautiful ones are their more classical ones which they back-off the wall-of-sound and huge third voice chorus.... These more classically inspired songs promote the emotion and beauty. Anni-Frid Lyngstad on lead is heavenly. She has refined vocal vocal skills and has mastered diaphragmatic breathing. Listen to her original 'Fernando' in Swedish, a huge solo hit for her in 1975. It's breathtakingly beautiful. A year later ABBA recorded this English version. Also, a huge hit for ABBA. So this is technically an ABBA cover of Anni-Frid's original Swedish language 'Fernando'. A few very beautiful ABBA songs that have more classical stylings. - One Man One Woman - Andante Andante - When All Is Said And Done - Gonna Sing You My Love Song - Like An Angel Passing Through My Room - Tropical Paradise - I, Wonder - I Let The Music Speak - Our Last Summer The brunette ABBA girl has an incredibly beautiful voice.

@@danbike9 Hi! Yes, indeed! "Andante, Andante", "Our Last Summer", & back to the Latin sound with "Chiquitita" - these are 3 of my faves. You saw where Metallica paid tribute to ABBA in their home country by playing "Dancing Queen", yeah? Said to myself, "Well, I can die now, because I've seen EVERYTHING!". But that just speaks to ABBA's lasting universal appeal. And, of course, there's the HUGE Broadway musical, "Mama Mia!". I think 1 thing that makes them so extraordinary is that their beautiful voices blend & harmonize so well. Listening to them is like strolling through a gorgeous formal garden - every flower, bush, & tree carefully placed to compliment all the others, presenting a perfectly coordinated whole. We're all fortunate to be able to HEAR what that garden SOUNDS like, thanks to ABBA. And thank YOU for your informative comment.

My uncles name is Fernando. This song always reminds me of the story of the day they left Mexico and crossed the border in order to search for freedom & Liberty. Somewhere along the way, they were separated but eventually reunited. My mother was pregnant at the time and my father was waiting for her in Santa Ana, CA. I always remember that story when I hear this song. It reminds me of the hardships my parents had to go through to give me a better life. And it also makes me sad at the fact that they truly believed in the promises of America. They aren’t Americans by birth but by choice. This song just makes me cry everytime

Fifty-three years, ago, 4 million Biafrans died, defending themselves, against a genocidal war, WE NEVER THOUGHT, WE COULD LOSE. The US, UK, Russia, and Egypt, ganged-up against oil-d ich Biafra, in spite of global condemnation of the massacre of 2 million Igbos in Western and Northern Nigeria, and Lagos. In May 1966, alone, 350,000 Igbos were killed in Kaduna, Zaria, Kano, and Sokoto, alone. I joined the army, to defend a piece of earth, where my people could be free, from the constant pogrom. We would not have lost, without the UNHOLY, ahistorical alliance of America, Britain, Russia, Egypt, etc. Israel broke ranks with the US, to give us some support. The Vatican, Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Canada, Tanzania, Enegal, Haiti, and other, Christian nations, threatened with US sanctions, gave us FOOD but, not arms, to defend ourselves. Abba's Fernando brings tears, to my 79-year old eyes.

That flute intro always sends shivers of bittersweet nostalgia down my spine. ABBA's works are never short of sentimentality, sincerity and musicianship.

I love how music has the power to make you feel nostalgic for events in your life that never happened. Out of all of the songs I've heard in my life, this song is easily one of the most powerful in that regard.
