This is one of the most underrated songs of ABBA. This is such a masterpiece, like all the songs from this album. One of the best ABBA albums. The tunes weren't as happy or as catchy as the early ones, but they were their best efforts.

The whole album has sort of a dark, cold feel to it, down to the picture on the cover. It's a very mature effort with a theme of loss, regret, sadness, and at times the ability to transcend it all and look back with appreciation. The one song that is truly out of place is "Two for the Price of One." I think they put it in there to keep the album from being too dark, but I think it took away from the whole effect. Still I think it's their best album. "The Album" was also a masterpiece, but "The Visitors" was something so unexpected. I think that is what made it stand out. The only other album that I can think of that breaks the mold so late in a band's career is "Savage" by Eurthmics.

This is my favorite ABBA track on my favorite ABBA album. I remember so vividly, even still in 1986 when I first hit the gay clubs, they played this song and the crowd became a writhing mass. People were hooting and cheering and the song was already 4 years old. It was my first time feeling an energy among a group that was like euphoria. And without drugs. This song is soooo underrated. One of my all time favorite songs. Love the slow burn start and the eargasm chorus. Chill inducing. Smiling not optional. Thanks for the memories Dereck. Lol. Music is a mile marker on my life. The right song can instantly transport me to a specific place and time.

Yes! And Even into the early 90s. A gay club I frequented in Dallas would play the Visitors (the one and only place I'd ever heard thr song) around 3am, accompanied with some crazy pulsing strobe lights! It was euphoric! And For years, I had absolutely no clue it was ABBA, even though I'd always loved them for the more obvious Dancing Queen and Take a Chance etc.

They would often play The Visitors in the bar upstairs at Heaven in London in the 80s. And Sydney's #1 alternative "yoof" radio station, 'Double J', played it constantly for weeks when it was first released. People were amazed that it was ABBA.

Same happened to me when entering a disco in Miami back in 1996; There was a robotic (3D dummies swirling around themselves) video at the danceteria and suddenly the dancefloor was packed with jumping crowd yelling "CRACKING'UP!" at the top of their lungs... And yes, Derek, again, "lots of synths!"...

This album always intrigued me. More than any other, by far. Mesmerized by the beautifully mysterious and dark album cover. Then there's the title track, which pulls you into a frightening story that you can so easily visualize yourself in. The music and Frida's voice is so haunting. A dramatic departure from their previous work. An underrated work of art.

This is a Top 10 favorite ABBA of mine as well. It's so eerie and futuristic as a lot of early 80s new wave songs were at that time. Like you're traveling through time into another world, and love how the music builds up slowly, and particularly the increasing volume of the drums, in the verses before the chorus when the girls harmonize. The synths in this song are amazing! One of Frida's best vocal performances on any album. As far as with Frida's voice effect, it was probably done in post-production and with maybe some vocoder/filter on it.

The Hot Tracks extended mix of this song was a dance-floor filler in the clubs back then and got quite high on the Billboard Dance Chart. I'm not sure if there were any effects on the vocals. I think I read that Frida contorted her voice to mimic a Sitar instrument. She had improvisation skills borne from her Jazz background. On 'The Day Before You Came', many fans were surprised that the haunting, operatic background sounds were real vocals and not synth produced.

VSITORS =KGB. To be truly human you have to be free of oppression. Strip that away you are left less human. Frida's voice echo's that soulless state, Bjorn, Benny and their recording/producer wizard, Michael B Tretow , experimented with many recording techniques to achieve new sounds right from the start. They often sped up the sound of the girls voices and also the layered instruments to achieve that hard to imitate ABBA wall of sound. From 'ABBA The Album' onwards they had their own purpose built recording studios, Polar Music, to do just that.

Glad you enjoyed the song, Benny & Bjorn had a lot of up to date technology in their studio, Frida’s vocals were treated with a vocoder. This is a favourite of Frida & Bjorn’s. I’ve noted before that this song was a big club hit in USA in 1983 in gay clubs, as the gay community saw similarities with the paranoia of being ‘outed’ as you could be ostracised and even lose their job. There is a tremendous video on KZbin (I will look for the link) where the song is played in a nightclub and it is filmed on a mobile phone, but the euphoria you hear from the crowd is spine tingling. You are right Dereck, the chorus is a rewrite of Summer Night City. In the U.K. the song was a ‘B side to Head Over Heels, and Frida even said that she would’ve preferred The Visitors as an ‘A side to show their new style.

Dereck you sexy darling...SO HAPPY TO HEAR YOU FALLING IN LOVE WITH FRIDA'S VOICE!!! In the 70s Björn and Benny said that they regarded Agnetha as a great interpreter of songs, and Frida a singer who could use her voice like a musical instrument, able to do anything with it. I often wonder what the classic ABBA songs would sound like if the girls swapped lead vocals. The only one I think would work is Chiquitita, which is more or less a duet anyway. Otherwise, the girls made their solo songs their own!! Thanks, Dereck! 💝

It's one of ABBAs best creations, their harmony is top notch, and the rely on talent, not explosions. Personally you just earned my respect for listening to a song from the inside of the songwriter and felt the impact. Yes, Frida is up there close to Freddy Mercury (Best of the best).

I just want to also add that I can't believe that this wasn't even considered a top 40 hit in the US. It did make it on the dance charts as did "Lay all your love on me" same thing. It just wasn't in the mainstream, mainly in the clubs. Totally AWESOME and timeless!

If you like this please preview the Hot Tracks remix. The dance floor at Heaven literally erupted - everyone made a mad scramble as soon as that unmistakeable intro started And they played the entire slowly building intro so that everyone could park drinks and get themselves onto that sprung dance floor which was HEAVING. Ahh, wonderful memories. This is their dark masterpiece, I think.

The voice was all Frida's. Not a chance it was electronically edited, that sort of equipment wasn't available in the early 80s. (I always loved Frida's voice the best. The songs where she was performing the lead were always my favourite.) I remember I got this album from a bloke who fancied me. It wasn't mutual, but I accepted his gift. ;) In vinyl, just when it came out. Adore this whole album. I haven't listened to this track for ages but it all came back to me like it was just yesterday when I first heard it. Magical music. Personally, as I understood it then, the "visitors" seemed to me like aliens from beyond the stars... YMMV.

In my opinion, this is ABBA's best album, it's also their last. Very dark themes, very mature. The remastered special edition adds some b-sides as well as their very last singles, including the super dark gem "The day before you came".

Even if we had just bought our drinks, my best friend and I would guzzle them, slam our empty glasses on the bar, and run to the dance floor when this song came on. No discussion necessary-it was automatic! A favorite at Trash Disco night at Rich’s in Houston in the 90s.

Mis-heard lyrics can be funny. I once heard my mam singing along to their track 'He is your brother'. Instead of singing ''treat him well, he is your brother'' she was singing ''cheatin' Willie is your brother''.

thanks Dereck. Best ABBA song. I was 12 when this came out and it blew my mind. it's a very cold war song that taps into the anxiety of the era and Frida's voice is haunting .

I suggest you listening to a song written by Benny and Björn (not for ABBA) that was a tremendous hit back in the 80s. It is called ‘One Night in Bangkok’ performed by Murray Head. It’s an absolute gem!!

@Marvin Morawski It was the first pop album to be recorded digitally. Several digital classical recordings were made beginning in the late 70s, which is why there were so many classical releases when the compact disc was launched in 83 - many classical labels had been recording digitally for a few years.

ABBA did not do as much promotion in USA as they did in Europe and down under. It is unfortunate. Because of that many of us did not hear things in real time. My love for ABBA came regardless of their promotion. I saw them on Saturday Night Live. I loved Dancing Queen and then I discovered their catalog. I then listened to them in chronological order so I could get the full experience. In my life they are 1A to the Beatles who are 1A to ABBA. I would be happy with their music only in my life although I adore so many other groups and individuals. But ABBA and the Beatles are my heart.

I’ve always loved this song. If you read the Diary of Anne Frank and then listen to this song it parallels the experience that Anne and her family experienced while in hiding. They always feared someone would come knocking at the door of the attic they hid in. They dreaded the day these “visitors” would arrive. Anne Frank describes all the feelings that the words of the Visitors include. Brilliant song!
