YES! This was at the height of the Cold War tensions during Andropov's tenure and Sweden was not far away at all. A couple years after they put ABBA on the back burner, Benny & Bjorn went on to write the musical "Chess" containing similar things.

It’s my favorite ABBA album as well. It was unlike anything they had done. A lot of serious topics handled in the lyrics that they didn’t delve into on other albums. The Visitors, Voulez-Vous and Super Trouper are my top 3 ABBA albums and in that order as well. Just so much great music!

'I have been waiting for these visitors'. The Visitors being the secret police. There has been much debate whether a vocal effect (vocoder) was used. Anni-Frid, herself, said she manipulated her voice to have a 'sitar' sound. The way she sings this is of resigned acceptance of one's own fate. The song can also be used as a metaphor for paranoia. ABBA doing a song about political dissidents and morphing it into a dance-floor banger. Genius.

With this song they really went into a techno/new wave direction. So different than anything they had up to that point. And I was MESMERIZED by this song. The driving beat, Frida's compressed vocals, the layered instruments, the eastern indian George Harrison-ish vibe, and on and on. This was also their first digital CD release as well. They had stated they were ironing out the kinks with the final output with this then-new technology. With a few subsequent tracks like I am the city they kept in that genre but never equaled The Visitors, the album and the title track. It's a real trip and a dark moody masterpiece.

My favourite ABBA song. I think the vocal effect is a phaser. I think if ABBA had released another album after this it would have been more synth driven even than this one. Their career seemed to fit with the predominant sounds of the time. They started off with a lot of rock and even folk then moved into disco and dance and I think much of this final album, released in 1982 alongside debuts by the likes of Depeche Mode and Duran Duran tapped more into synth pop. Not new romantic or new wave as those other bands but certainly having the synth lead an instrumental chorus is something Gary Numan and OMD were also doing. So yeah thy were right on point with their sound here in 1981.
@bretta2221
@bretta2221 3 жыл бұрын
You can definitely hear the synth in their 1982 recording 'I am The City'. A good example of what their next album would have sounded like, had they produced another album. Now days along with Under Attack, Cassandra and You Owe Me One (all recorded in 1982) they are just bonus tracks on the 1981 album.

Fabian, this song would be considered synthpop and if you go back and listen to it again you’ll hear Frida singing “I have been waiting for these visitors” in response to your your comment about where the song title is in the lyrics. about "equalizer" : ABBA used everything that was available at the time and every tracks available for exemple recording twice the voices and alterate the speed of one track to give the "voice-sound" they wanted to... About Frida's voice in "The Visitors" here what Carl Magnus Palm (THE ABBA expert) wrote in the Excellent *"ABBA The Complete Recording Sessions Revised and Expanded Edition"* Quote (p.395) : *"kinking off with an ominous synthesizer and feedback guitar introduction, it leads into an intruiguing verse melody, as delivered by Frida's Harmonizer-treated vocal performance, here the modal inflections lend it an almost indian flavour"*

The Visitors is the Secret Service coming to take away those dissidents in Russia who were trying to change Russia to be more open and free. It is the only song where they really strayed from their traditional ABBA sound. It took a bit to get used to that but it could have been more what they may have tried to do if they had not broken up. The Men of ABBA started letting Politics into their music in the early 1980's. The Soviet Union was a real threat and any opposition by groups of Russian citizens were stamped out by the Communists. This song is about a Russian Dissident who is hiding from the KGB [The Russian Secret Service ] but is expecting a knock on the door any second. Another Song on the Album is called Soldiers [Good Song}. Sweden is Not in Nato but does cooperate with Nato. Sweden is close to Russian and the Men remember back in 1940 the Winter War in which Russia invaded Sweden's small Neighbor Finland. The Lyrics about remembering a Cold December, you and I have reason to remember is about that invasion. The Men are saying to the people of Sweden that if a War starts in Europe against Russia that Sweden will have to dance also if the Bugler starts to play.

First one has vocals by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson; there's a superb recording of the second one by Josh Groban. Sweden's borders next to Russia. Alot of sinister Political events in the 1980's. I did not care for this album at all back in the day. Now I feelit is a total masterpiece...it is Abba's White Album. Just like The Beatles, they produced some of their absolute best music during their final days. They have often been compared to Joy Division of their time...very dark, very Scandinavian : )

Y’know, I used to really love your ABBA reactions (SOS is a favorite) but lately all you do is watch and ask for money. No opinions, no joy. It’s disappointing. Are you over them already after 2 months? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I totally agree. The condescension he shows while chastising non paying viewers is a total turn off. I stopped watching him altogether because of this but here today I was tempted to give him another chance because The Visitors is a song I really love….but as usual his talk only becomes passionate when he is speaking about himself.

There's no such thing as too much ABBA. It's like picking up too many gold coins from between the rocks on a river bank.

This did not go well with the Soviet government. ABBA had some popularity in the USSR.

Not quite true. The subject matter was never revealed until years after the USSR broke up. They were however upset that an ABBA video was played on a tv show called ‘Let Poland be Poland’.

Oh, you again, making yet another negative comment about a song where Frida takes the lead. Quelle surprise 🥱 😴
