This was the last song ABBA recorded together before their lastest album. It's a really strange song, a woman recounting the boring details of her life before someone came into it. The person must be here now, so why does she sound so sad and melancolic? Fans have many theories about what happened to the woman in the song, it's a rabbit hole.

That's what makes the song so enduring & enigmatic. The lyrics read like a journal, not that depressing at all but why is the overall tone of the piece so depressing & haunting? Love this song.

The contrast it produces is incredible. In its time it was almost ignored by critics and commercially. So much so that it was ABBA's biggest chart flop since "So Long" in 1974. But it was vindicated many years later in that UK TV special that chose the best ABBA song among all their singles. and "The day before you came" closed the podium, behind "Dancing Queen" in second place and the first place to "The winner takes it all" The official video also features Agnetha alone, with a co-star, for the entire first half of the song. And just after the instrumental bridge, the three remaining members of ABBA appear, completely separated, disconnected from each other, on the stage of a theater or cinema, with Agnetha singing and the rest 'in a passive pose'. That video is a reflection of what ABBA was at that time before their breakup and at the same time their 10-year anniversary. "The day before you came" is the second longest of ABBA (only surpassed by "Eagle", by a couple of seconds) But I think that the final minute is left over For many it is a Masterpiece, for many it is the best ABBA song And surely you will have many comments and views here And it's perfect But for me it is one more song, routine like its rhythm and lyrics, it doesn't even enter my Top50 of the fantastic ABBA catalog with "The day before you came" For me the same applies as for the previous one "Like an angel passing through my room" I see them as if they were songs by solo singers, not by a group like ABBA as Björn and Benny have said, 90% of the ABBA sound is the combined voices of Agnetha and Frida, they together make the Magic of ABBA and in these songs for me that magic is missing But that's what it's all about, the variety of opinions and tastes, and sharing with respect in their diversity. best regards to all

She's not ABBA. She is Agnetha; one of the 4 members of ABBA ! Really this song sounds very sad: the atmosphere, the lyrics, the music is so repetitive, the gloomy climate, ... Fans have lots of opinions about this. My interpretation always was that this song has a hidden meaning. It's like saying: Look at how boring and dull was my life. My days were all the same. I can tell exactly what was going on at each moment of the day; because they were all identical; all so sad and empty. But all this until the day before I met you." This suggests that everything changed afterwards. She should be very happy now after meeting that man. In this masterpiece they surpass themselves, managing to convey a message of happiness through the saddest song ever. They are truly the unsurpassed masters of bittersweet songs.
