Frida's operatic vocals in the 'instrumental' break of The Day Before You Came are amazing and such a contrast to the more mundane and down to earth lead vocals of Agnetha. Overall, this song is a masterpiece.

Said of someone one the tube about this one: "People don't realise it but this is truly one of the greatest masterpieces in modern pop music. No chorus, a double-beat that comes at intervals that feel right but you cannot put your finger on, an extremely mundane story that actually is so powerful from what it doesn't say. I remember when heard this in October 1982, the effect was immediate: the melancholy and sadness mixed with hope.. foreboding of things to come. The song has always lived on with me until this day. The sound of the sirens too hard to resist..

Cassandra is one of my favourites. Frida's voice was described by Michael B Tretow (engineer) as truly Hi-Fidelity. Benny described it as an instrument. She practiced for a long time to get the robotic sounds for The Visitors (song). You hear remnants of it on Should I Laugh Or Cry (B-side of One Of Us). Learning to use her voice is probably why she evolved more through the ABBA years. Loving your channel ❤❤❤ ❤

I'm very happy to see you again, with more reactions to ABBA songs. And congratulations for doing the reactions to both sides of each single from 1982 "The day before you arrived" It was the last ABBA song recorded. (until the new album "Voyage") although it was not the last single (was next, "Under Attack") It was one of the last three to barely crack the UK Top 30, a low expectation for what ABBA were used to. It is said that it was recorded in a dark and humid room, to make it more gloomy and to help Agnetha perform. It's a fictional story, cryptic lyrics by guitarist Björn and dark music by Benny synths. I will be honest Of all their singles, this is the one I like the least (for me it's okay, but not much more, 6/7pts) Agnetha's vocal performance is the best, but she feels very alone without a classic ABBA chorus and instrumentation. The official video is also strange, but it is well done, in relation to the story the lyrics tell Once again Agnetha looks alone, now as an actress, the rest of the members of ABBA appear only at the end and disaggregated I understand that many fans like it, it is even well positioned in the votes for the best ABBA song. (it's number 3 for British fans, only behind # 1 "The Winner Takes All" and #2 "Dancing Queen") I also know that it is part of the musical research and experimentation of ABBA's recent years. But this song is not the style of music I like and Agnetha iseems as a solo artist. That's why I prefer her other songs from before her, where the four members are more involved, in addition to other musical genres. For example, I prefer ABBA singles. Ring Ring, I do , I do I do I do I do Head over heels, Under attack their other singles that were not in the Top 10 in the UK in their time between 1973/1982

it’s kind of hard for me to say because I haven’t heard a great deal of ABBA’s catalog. But I did really enjoy TDBYC.It’s more spare than I was expecting but that kind of added to the charm after I listen to it a few times. That’s interesting that it was recorded in a humid room lol. I would hate that but I guess anything for a good song haha! And Cassandra grew on me maybe even more so! I look forward to a Under Attack . I LOVE your fun, articulate reviews and passion!!! "The DAY Before You Came" is one of my favorite and an absolute ABBA masterpiece. I wish you had shown the video. "Cassandra" is a beautiful song as well and tells another story. (You should look up what it is about.) There actually is a LIVE TV PERFORMANCE of both songs, from German TV in 1982. I highly recommend that you present them on the second part here! Both are excellent performances, that bring ABBA out into the 80's technology and are pretty dramatic - especially TDBYC performance with Agnetha out front of a huge ABBA logo, as the stage turns to reveal the other three on the other side of the logo, with a fog-swept stage floor and Frida relaxing on a grand piano. SPECTACULAR images! Thank you for giving ABBA the respect and attention they deserve. There is no other band like ABBA. They are amazing and legendary, finally getting the respect they deserve!

I remember when the DJ just started to play the song for the first time (he didn't mention anything, just started to play the song), and I was like what! she sounds so like Agnetha, I wish this is ABBA.. throughout the song I just kept hoping it was a new song by ABBA and when it ended and DJ announced it was the new single by ABBA, I was like over the moon. To this day I still consider it as ABBA's best song. I still love this song.

I've always found The Day Before You Came to be one of the most tragic songs ever written. In my mind the character singing leads a life of desperate loneliness and mind numbing tedium where every day is forever the same. The only way she can cope is by imagining that the next day somebody will walk in to her life and everything will change for her...but they never do ! So the next day it is back to the monotony and hoping again that it will change the day after. She is still stuck in this cycle 40 years later. I know I am probably reading too much into it and projecting my own life into the song. Lol

I recommend a Spanish singer, her name is Diana Navarro. With the song " El perdón " She is a very versatile singer singing different musical styles with a very particular voice and incredible melismas. She always transmits when she sings. Best regards and I hope you enjoy

I think Frida took delight in varying her voice - sometimes with near comic effect. Her operatic style - and sense of fun - can be seen in the "jam session" part of the Olivia Newton John TV show. Frida always seemed to me to be the one who REALLY enjoyed performing on stage - or anywhere with an audience!

I love how you analyze these songs, and your perceptive comments! Agree about Frida's rich vocals in later records especially The Visitors album. She had quite an emotional range in her delivery, velvety, smooth, warm, like a rich red wine with depth and layers of undertones, and the songs she sang lead on during this period brought this out. 'Cassandra' relates to the story of the daughter of King Priam of Troy in Greek Mythology. She was gifted with the power of prophecy by the god, Apollo but she had later angered him so he also cursed her that nobody would believe her forewarnings. She warned the Trojans of the Greeks invasion but they ignored her and the city of Troy was devastated

TDBYC - my personal favourite track! And I went to my work by train on the exact platform we see Agnetha at (Tumba outside Stockholm). Agnetha sings a bit differently in this song, as she was instructed to sound more like talkning than singing. This was one of the last recorded ABBA songs in 1982. Two were not released; I am the city and Just like that (though the first was released in 1993, the second only a snippet in 1994 - but can officially be found complete here on YT, best restoration by a guy named Philipe Dupont) It was also a part of their last TV performance, as was Cassandra and Under Attack (with full backing track, Ubder Attack had a different "cold" ending - the others fade out Cassandra is beautifully sung by Anni-Frid, and it do remind me a bit of the earlier unreleased Put on your white sombrero wich was replaced by Super Trouper in 1980. And, the guitarr reminds me of the guitar in Eagle Regarding Cassandra, an interesting note is that it was the Accordion that got Benny into music. Thx

my second comment for The B-side "Cassandra" is a B-side to one of ABBA's two latest singles, with "The day before You came" on the A-side. In my personal opinion I like "Cassandra" better, it's beautiful, with a great Frida on lead vocals and a powerful chorus with Agnetha ABBA had great lyrics, some more sad or melancholic, but this is inspired by a prophetess from ancient mythology in Greece guitarist Björn has written lyrics with other historical themes, already with "Fernando" in 1976 (thinking about the Mexican revolution) as with "The Piper" in 1980 (based on The Pied Piper of Hamelin) It would be great see you in the sequence with the last one next time: "Under attack / You own me one" (ABBA's last official single, until their 2021 comeback) Thanks again for the new reaction I wish you a great weekend My best regards from Buenos Aires es Argentina 🇦🇷 South America P.S.: There Is a video from a 1982 German TV Special with three songs: "The day before you arrived", "Cassandra" "Under Attack" It was one of ABBA's last television performances, on November 11, 1982, coincidentally the day of my 25th birthday. Ahh, so glad you reviewed TDBYC! The more I hear the song, the more I'm sure something awful happened to the character singing the song after meeting whoever this person was. He changed her life, that's for sure, but I don't think in a good way. I've read that Agnetha (in later comments about this song) hints that something dreadful happened. This is an epic song. Agnetha's vocal mastery is understated but beautiful and Frida's operatic backing (I think she thought that up for this song) only adds to its lovely sadness. SImply, there is no ABBA without these women. I believe Agnetha was asked to sing this song in a mundane way by one of the B's (maybe Benny??) but even taking that into account, her ability to get to the core of the song instinctively, along with Frida's haunting backing captures the mood of it entirely. A most unABBAlike ABBA song, but so recognisably them, and so gloriously haunting and beautiful. Much love for your reviews from Australia. 👍

TDBYC is about suicide. The story is of someone who suffers from depression. The "you" that Agnetha sings about is death itself. The day before death came. Frida's voice is mourning the loss. Opinion of course but it does sound like someone describing a rather meaningless life who decides to end things.

This single is a masterpiece because Aside and Bside are both masterpieces. The Day Before You Came wasn't a hit, it was too long, dark or introspective to be played on the radio and be a single. That was a pity. Agnetha and Frida in the operatic part were great, the production is amazing. I've enjoyed your video very much, thank you. 😊

I've read loads of people's interpretations of what "The Day Before You Came" is all about 🤔 But I think sometimes they add arms and legs, looking for things that aren't actually there. Can I do any better? 😆 Hmmm 🤔 Purely on lyrics alone... Looking back over daily routine with vague awareness, and with "...must have..." being repeated at times, the narrator seems to have woken up from the haze to realise she has lead an aimless life. And the reason for it is... A life changing encounter. Without wanting to project any ideals onto it, there's no telling who the "...you..." is. It is totally open ended. Purely, the song describes a wake-up call. And wake-up calls usually go hand in hand with new beginnings.

I always found that "Cassandra" should have been the A-Side. That's not to say I don't like "The day before you came", it's a great song, but "Cassandra" touches me even more, in some special way. The historic topic is also outstanding. Great idea, great lyrics. I couldn't disagree more with her opinion that it would have been the weakest track on "The Visitors".

There is a strong sence of loneliness and sadness in The Day Before You Came. My guess is that it wasn't a happy meeting. Why should it be this sad then. There are many theories about the meaning of the lyrics (Wikipedia!!). There is also a strange long time gap in her day. What happened then. This was ABBA's final recording until Voyage. They had recorded several songs they were not happy with (like Just Like That which they never released). Agnetha sang the song in the studio, the lights were dimmed. They all felt sad cuz they sort of knew this was the end of ABBA. Ofc it must have been painful and strange to go through the divorces and still work together. But it resulted in the beautiful The Visitors album. One of their very best albums. When it comes to Cassandra I have never been a fan of it. Cannot compete with Chiquitita or Fernando

However the quote was never made public until the revised edition came out in 2017. Just because you haven’t heard it, don’t be too quick to dismiss it if you have no evidence.

It's was Agnetha's idea to sing this song like Charles Aznavour would do it. Half speaking, half singing. Acting the song. The frida fans always draw the attention to the backing vocals trying to make them just as important as the lead. Ofcourse it isn't. Top 3 abba songs by the britisch people. 1.
