And Bjorn is a genius. I like what Gene Simmons said in the VH1 Behind the Music episode about ABBA; to paraphrase as best as I remember, when describing ABBA, Gene said, 'It was really well crafted pop music. If you don't understand that, you just don't get it.' Like I said, I'm paraphrasing from a show I saw in the early or mid-nineties, when VH1 was a thing. I thought it was exceptionally high praise, especially coming from Gene Simmons. Good musicians appreciate all genres of music.

No, they were just born privileged and entitled, like all Swedish, Norwegian and Dutch kids who have ever wanted to get into music production. If you've got the money for all the right gear you can do pretty much anything you want.

@@MariusLaru The international music scene was dictated and administered by two major countries: Britain & America. The British and American music industry ignored and rejected ABBA. This video kinda tells that story, along with the importance of their music videos. ABBA TV before MTV. Groups from America, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa dominated the pop/rock international music scene - all english speaking nation's. Countries, like Sweden, who's native language was not english were ignored. The thinking was, "how could non-native english language speakers write songs/melodies for english lyrics" ...... ABBA was rejected by the music industry. Nobody would publish their music. It was thrown away. Enter ABBA's plan. They figured out a way to get heard. First by entering Eurovision ('Waterloo' 1974) and also by sending low budget music clips to TV program directors around the world. The program directors liked them -- so they put them on TV. Boom!!! The people around the world loved ABBA. Radio stations then played their records. They managed to get heard by doing an "end around" the American and British controlled international music industry. ABBA is credited to busting up the American /British control. ABBA were the rebels in the music industry. It opened up doors for other non native english speaking nation's. ABBA were the ultimate indie band. They wrote the music they wanted to write. They did everything themselves. They released records on their timetable VS giant corporate label dictates. Today, everybody has a high respect for not only their high level of musicality, musicianship and professionalism, but because they never sold out to corporations. Benny Andersson said ABBA's music will never be used to sell a service or product. He said ABBA legacy business gets calls everyday for request to sample, use a song in commercial, etc..... He said the answer is always no. ABBA's thinking is if your music is heard all over, like in TV commercials, etc..... selling cars, computers, services... then the music gets diluted and is cheapened. They are the most intelligentlly run major international musical groups I know. One of the smartest things they did was going out on the top of their game. They were all still young, energetic, etc..... That image will always be intact. Smart!!!!!

As a die-hard metalhead...I gotta say... My mother LOVED ABBA, she would play their records whenever she cleaned the house. I remember watching my mother dance to their music while she was cleaning, and seeing her so content and happy brought me so much joy. I would clap as she danced to the catchy tunes coming from ABBA, and as long as my mother was happy, it brought me joy. I still think of her whenever I hear an ABBA song. "Waterloo" was her favorite song. I miss her so much. R.I.P., momma #dancingqueen

I fondly remember my mom singing and dancing to Abba while cleaning the house too. I’d asked for the records for Christmas back in 1979 or 80. Thanks to the magic of Abba both of my parents enjoyed them so I got to listen to them much more than I normally would have. Your mom is still with you, knows what’s going on in your life. Ask her to send you signs that she’s still there, even to play Abba for you. There are lots of great documentaries, books and podcasts out there that talk about the signs our loved ones send us from the other side. I’m not religious at all but after losing some dear ones myself I’ve immersed myself in the topic for years. Enjoy those memories! 😊

@danbike94 жыл бұрын
@@Dermacrosis Indeed. But how many ABBA music lovers know the history and the battles they had with the music industry puppeteers. Too include DJ's who would not play their records.... There is a reason B&B wrote their mini-musical (77) -- 'The Girl With The Golden Hair' : 1. Thank You For The Music 2. I, Wonder (Departure) 3. I'm A Marionette 4. Get On The Carousel (Live only - no studio) Listen to them in this order. It was ABBA's message/warning to artist not to sign away their artistic creativity to the industry puppeteers (record labels, etc....) and also, their polite "middle finger" to the industry puppeteers. The fsongs represent a young artist who loves music and wants to make it big. She leaves home and makes it big. Then she soon finds out she is losing control, she begins to feel like a marionette as the industry puppeteers start to control her. Then she tries to get off the carousel, but it's too late -- she is now owned by the music industry puppeteers. ______ The Swedish music puppeteers tried to bury them, then the American and British pop/rock music industry tried as well.... But ABBA went around them. Outsmarted them: Eurovision Song Contest (Waterloo) and their low budget music clips sent to TV stations around the world. BOOM! ABBA did an end around the corporate music industry puppeteers. They published and recorded on their home label. Produced everything themselves. They maintained control of their creativity. They never sold out to the corporate music world. They were a very unique band.

What I'm trying to say is that they've lasted about 46 years... and still no competition... In the past four decades or so, there have been great bands (in different genres) but there's never been anyone even close to dethroning ABBA... Just sayin' Cheers!

I often avoid ABBA songs and this video watched yesterday for the first time made me question why.. Their music is simply wonderful and the sound defines a whole era, a generation and much of my life. Beyond time, beyond personal relations of the band, they captured something the world can share. I avoid the songs because it's a lot of emotion to process (sometimes) but when I can process it, I truly embrace them fully. Thank you Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid et-al. Thank you for the music so very much!

This made me really wish - as a totally younger generation - what the allure was like, the very gist of Abba for your generation who lived the 70s? I do feel regret for being outside what was that and not really having the family who shared or talked about music beyond talking what was rarely afforded to air on the private. ABBA and Thin Lizzy would've been on pirate radio stations back in the day! I grew up learning of the world as a small boy in a 911, post-soviet fall world. Where bling was all that mattered; and being poor, speaking for a cause and protest, or just being sentimental were for losers. some south park world. I don't know what I just watched but this is glorious. Well, the puppets are rather creepy but the real ABBA show up, the music is undoubtedly some of the best ever written, and it has the eternally brilliant Rik Mayall as a blend of Richard Richard, Alan B'stard, the Young Ones Rik and Adonis Cnut coupled with camp dancing.

Right, why is no one talking about the puppets? They're scary as shit

I love the puppets (and puppetry). Humanizing the puppets' nuances like that is a signature quality of the Henson company. The tiny facial expressions, the flirting, the joy, the gyrations and Puppet Bjorn coughing because of the smoke machine. The fact that the performance came to life in such a way that makes the puppets seem like sentient autonomous beings is part of what makes the puppetry so masterful.

@@kencoleman5007 no doubt the technical aspects of it takes great skill and I appreciate the points you make.

As a kid, watching my parents dance to ABBA and listening to ABBA music over the years I can say one thing, there are only few musicians or group of musicians that can deliver song after song and everybody loves it, most artists make one or two songs that sound good and rest sound like crap, ABBA made all their songs sound good that to this day we can't get enough of.
