I worked at a movie theater in 1980. One night I was asked to work late because they were going to screen a rough cut of a new movie from Universal Studios called Xanadu for the theater chain president to watch and bid on the next morning. We had to load it to the theater platter projection system. This theater was one of the first in the chain to have a Dolby surround sound system installed. My job was to make sure the splices for the various reels are clean and the movie ran without any problems. I had the privilege of watching Xanadu probably before any other public person ever saw it. It was months before it's official release. There were jump cuts and splices with "scene missing" title cards for a few frames at certain points. The Don Bluth animation was not completed and was all wire frame during that scene. The best part was I got to sit in the middle of a 400 seat theater by myself with the soundtrack cranked and listen to brand new Olivia Newton John and ELO songs that no one else in the world had heard yet. The movie was kind of corny but you have to admit that it is a kick-ass soundtrack that endures to this day.

Olivia Newton John was amazing in this movie. I went to the Worlds Fair in Knoxville,!TN and at the Australia Pavilion they had a video of Olivia singing the song “Physical “ I will never forget that. She was an incredible lady, singer and actress. She was incredible for her fight with cancer too. When you get the phone call informing you that you have cancer you’re life is never the same every day after that. You could be fighting cancer for 10,20,30 or 40 years. Thank God for every day of your life? Because tomorrow is never promised us.

Previous to joining the army, I played keyboards in a plethora of Latin, Country-Western and Acid-Rock bands. Our job at the base was to repair radars, and the unit Sergeant was from Oklahoma. He played an Olivia Newton John cassette every day, several times, while we were working. At first I thought, "Oh, great, music for plastic people." But gradually, I caught up to the music. The beautiful voices, the wonderful harmonies, the bass lines, etc. I had the songs memorized by this time, and the chord progressions I could see in my head. Music is supposed to uplift the spirit and this music made me feel good inside. When I left the service, of course I got my own ONJ cassette and later a CD...

Xanadu the movie mesmerized me, as a gawky teenager still in high school in 1980. While the movie did not do well, it was a spectacular showcase and in its magical 1980's way, reminded me of what it was like to be 16 years old again. God I miss it. And I miss both Gene Kelly and Olivia.

@@mdwsb Interesting. I liked Xanadu and I'm a huge Olivia fan but I thought the editing of this movie was horrible. Lots of close ups when a lot of dancing was going on and a wide shot would have been good and shown the choreographers vision of the scene. I haven't seen this since I was 9 years old 41 years ago when it first came out. I'm loving this!! Oh the energy! When this film came out it bombed. I think it bombed unfairly becuase this was a film of fantasy and escape. Sure, this wasn't War and Peace, but it wasn't supposed to be. My older brother and sister used work at a disco from the late 70s to the early 80s. They would buy all of the most recent music and play it home as we would all dance, including my mother. It was a blast of a time! I see this film as an adult and even though it was a feast for my eyes and ears when I was a little kid, I grasp it to a greater extent now. the energy and movement was amazing. Life was so electrifying back then and even before the era when this film came out than it is now. The most exciting thing in contemporary life is sitting in front of a computer and living in a dysfunctional society ,which there is bitching about something, and society as a whole lacking social skills becuase a bunch of megalomaniac tech Titians want us to be lifeless robots under their control.

The problem is that the movie has a horrible script. That's not surprising given the history of the film - it was an adaptation of a story from the 1940s which was supposed to be recast as a roller-disco movie, but they found out another roller-disco movie was coming out before it, so they changed the major thrust, but they left the roller-disco elements in, then took them out, then restored the finale, then... They were just all over the place. Even the considerable talents of the cast and the musicians couldn't rescue it.
