It seems that whenever a BAND comes out with a song that doesn’t sound like any of their very big hits or doesn’t sound like what they are known for, they get criticized by a block of fans and critics who want and expect ALL of their songs to sound like their HITS. Sometimes criticism comes from within the band itself. John Lennon wasn’t necessarily thrilled whenever Paul McCartney had written another of what John called “granny songs“, like “When I’m 64”. But it became a HIT. Songwriters who can write a wider variety of songs get more singers and bands in different genres who want to sing them and CAN sing them. The Beatles’ “Honey Pie“ was this funny little song that was good when The Beatles sang it, but was GREAT when Barbra Streisand sang it. It was perfect for her at that time. Listen to it, if you haven’t heard it. Obviously, I love CLEVER/FUNNY songs and humor in music. Queen’s “Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon”, complete with bicycle bell, has always been one of my favorites. Mozart (A really funny guy, evidently) and Beethoven also come to mind. Anyone who can write and/or play and/or sing music that makes me laugh is first-class-kool in my book. BE SAFE. Peace...✌️

I like the 'He Is Your Brother' version sung in NYC for the UNICEF benefit with Earth, WInd & Fire, Rod Stewart, Donna Summer, Bee Gees and Olivia Newton-John singing along, among others. It's from their first album, which also includes "Another Town, Another Train", "Ring Ring"and "Nina Pretty Ballerina"

Surprised that the message of the song was barely mentioned. It links the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin with the rise of a charismatic dictator (supposedly Hitler) and attracting people to their cause.

Thanks for that reference. I always thought it was interesting for its different take on the Pied Piper story, but I never made THAT connection. I’ll have to look at the lyrics again to get a better idea.

Thanks for the reaction and welcome back. To me this is one of the songs were I think they are playing with doing soundtracks. Now if they'd done a video with the girls. Something like dancing in the moonlight with medieval garb on might have been a big hit. But both girls had wised up by this point.

"Sub luna saltamus" - under the moon we dance. Notice the military drumming in the sing song chorus. This song is, like "Soldiers," a warning.

I think it's not grammatically correct though. Should be "sub lunam" (preposition followed by the accusative form of the noun).

Jay, I'm so glad to see you again, best wishes to you and your family And thanks for resuming with ABBA "The piper" (1980) It is a very nice song from the album "Super Trouper" It has very interesting lyrics, I think it alludes to the Pied Piper of Hamelin Musically it is very creative, and although not exactly, I place it in the same group as "Eagle" & "Move on" (sounds seems like Andes music, from South América) And vocally it is of excellence, the choral part of Agnetha and Frida is powerful and glorious "The Piper" is very good, but it does not enter my Top 20 or 25, it is that ABBA has even better songs, the bar is very high Because of your review of the album you still haven't made the title song: "Super Trouper" (the ninth and last #1 of ABBA in the UK) Do you want to consider it for your next one? I send a big hug from my homeland Buenos Aires, Argentina

Welcome back! The Piper is ok for me. I love all Abba but agree not their best. I looked through the playlist for ABBA and here a few I don't think you've listened to. Super Trouper, When all is said and done, Andante Andante, I wonder, One man One woman, Gonna Sing you my lovesong. These coincidentally all leads by Frida. There is also an oldie called Disillusion written and sung by Agnetha. There is also Waterloo which they won the Eurvision song contest with. Ring, Ring and Another Town Another Train and Under Attack are also worthy of a listen . I hope you find these suggestions helpful and hope you will react to some.

As far as I’m concerned, that sound was perfect for them. The dramatic verses in a minor key are great. The switches to the major key for the choruses are great. The tags sung in Latin are great, So, GREAT.

@@nickchristoforou7850 I’m assuming that’s the Latin phrase they sing. “Dance beneath the moon”? I’ll confirm. So, Thank You for that! Perhaps coincidentally, this song has been in my head since I went to bed very late last night and TRIED to go to sleep. It’s still playing in my head, no matter what else I’m looking at or listening to. I do wish it would leave for a LITTLE while. Nevertheless, I still LOVE this song. There are MANY worse songs to have stuck in ones head. The tone of that phrase, sung in a minor key, is almost mocking in an evil, light-hearted, even humorous way. But the harmony is SO BEAUTIFUL. How can anyone help but like that?😁

musically, this is a terrible song. Really horrible. It was a B side to one of the singles, I forget which. There's a sort of dated fairlight production counterpointing a 1700s militarism (which would have been better with a snare). I find its sing-song quality deeply unpleasant, like an insistent nursery rhyme
