I have always loved the lesser known tracks. Benny and Bjorn were so talented, their music was creative at level hard to find today.
@synchronicityman90624 жыл бұрын
One of my favourite ABBA tracks. A very medieval sound. Bjorn was inspired to write it after reading Stephen King's novel 'The Stand', about a political leader who seduces many people with his false promises. It also has echoes of 'The Pied Piper'. As you say, Dereck, it is certainly very apt for our times. And, since you mention 'Eagle', you really should react to the full length audio version of that song, because the edit you watched ripped the instrumental soul out of it. And.....if you love flutes then you will adore 'Move On' from Abba- The Album'.

When I was 8 years old I wrote to Abba to ask them for tea :D They never came, and not because they were too busy or too famous, no, the reason (I found out when I was an adult) was that my Dad never sent the letter, so gutted LOL I was a die hard fan even then, and The Piper was the song I would sing in my 8 year old singing voice, driving my parents crazy :D
@renemartinez78644 жыл бұрын
I love it when in hindsight a track like this foreshadows the next album's overall direction. "The Piper" has that dark, foreboding feeling that permeates much of "The Visitors", but the flute definitely brightens it up. This is another example of that duality that characterizes ABBA's best work: it gives you a good feeling, but if you listen to the lyrics you notice that it's anything but a happy track. The track that diddo w. suggested, "Me and I", also has that ominous feeling that characterized so much of their early eighties work.

I love what you said at the end about ABBA and Disney being kind of similar. Fun fact: Björn and Benny were Disney’s first choice to write the songs for ‘The Lion King’ along with Tim Rice (after having collaborated to write the musical ‘Chess’). Unfortunately, the ABBA boys had to decline the offer because they were too busy writing their own Swedish musical ‘Kristina’. Thus, Disney contacted Elton John and he finally composed the songs for ‘The Lion King’. What a wasted opportunity for ABBA!

ABBA fan 4ever! I have listened to their music since I was about 10, I am now 58. Its such a shame they were so underrated here in the US. Yeah, Dancing Queen was great, but what about ALL the others? Even the B-sides were so good, They should've been chart toppers. They used varied types of vocals and instrumentation. They layered them and the way the women sang together was so unique as they blended so well. The instrumentation, everything from synths, strings, brass and percussion all layered together wonderfully! They could pull off pop, light rock, classical and dance uncommon among other artists. I would keep track of the top 40 and sadly see them at the end or near middle. It took Mamma Mia stage to finally recognize their brilliance.

Greetings from Australia, Dereck 👋😃🐨🦘🦜✨🎶🌈 I was just thinking something... seeing it looks like you like a lot of the ABBA songs that you have come across ("yay! 😁👍), I'd like to suggest that you listen to a whole *studio*-album, from start to end (if you haven't already), in that not only are the songs, and the individual arrangments and production great, but I've always found that Benny & Björn's tailoring of the studio-albums (the *order* of each song), complement each surrounding song, and for me, adds much to the journey of enjoying an ABBA song and album. Being biased (😉), I feel that's the case for all their studio albums (possibly to a lesser extent with the 'Waterloo' studio-album, IMHO); but a case in point... the 'Voulez-Vous' studio-album (which would have the most amount of disco songs on it) - I think the disco songs stand out well on the album as they are surrounded and strengthened by songs of other genres, like ballad ('I Have A Dream', 'Chiquitita'), MOR-rock/musical/'fantasy' ('The King Has Lost His Crown'), rock ('Does Your Mother Know'), pop ('If It Wasn't For The Nights'), and funk ('Lovers [Live A Little Longer]'). If that album was all just one clump of disco-genre, or all of the disco-ditties were all clumped together, then those songs wouldn't necessarily stand out as much. Also, I feel that the 'bookending' of their studio-albums would also be something that I believe is intentional by B&B; and I think this particularly works out well on the 'Voulez-Vous' album (not including the bonus-tracks, that were added on during CD days)... the album starts off bright and fresh with 'As Good As New', then gets down to business with 'Voulez-Vous' - then travels along nicely to the second last song of 'Lovers [Live A Little Longer', where there's a 'breath' after the 'dramatic' end, then the happy and fresh finalé of 'Kisses Of Fire'. If you get the time, and you haven't tried it already, I highly recommend listening to ABBA's eight studio-albums ('Ring Ring', 'Waterloo', 'ABBA', 'Arrival', 'ABBA the Album', 'Voulez-Vous', 'Super Trouper' and 'The Visitors' ... particularly the last six - and without the bonus-tracks for this 'experiment'), and I feel that you will discover B&B's intentional order of songs, and how they bookended those studio-albums, just strengthens the whole experience. As it looks like you like a lot of ABBA's music, I think you will additionally enjoy the journey of intentionally relaxing down to let a studio-album just wash through you, perhaps in a comfy chair, mood-lighting set, and a favourite drink (...can be just coffee or tea 😉 ...lol). As an 'old-fart' ABBA-fan since I was 10 on Monday the 8th of March 1976 (there's a reason for my obsessive remembrance of that date ...lol), I just love to see people discovering and enjoying ABBA, and that's why I'd like you to experience the added quality of listening to a whole studio-album. Enjoy 😃

I've always championed this song as one of ABBA's finest deep cuts (not that anyone's been listening). And I think it's also a pretty brave song. Not just for its lyrical content, which was controversial at the time, but also for having the balls to essentially compose the Pied Piper's music for him. The music is supposed to have a spellbinding power and be irresistible. It leads people dancing to their deaths, for Christ's sake! How do you pull something like that off in a pop song? How do you make it both joyously catchy and ominous at the same time? If the flute part hadn't worked, the whole concept of the song would've fallen apart. But as always, ABBA excel at everything. Now dance! Oh, and the other superb deep cut is "Move On". It's got a terrible spoken introduction by Björn, but the song itself is military-grade ABBA. Unbeatable pop.
