The fact that she sang and recorded this song while being heartbroken herself (recent divorced from his husband Bjorn), is what it makes this song so touching. She sang it from the bottom of her heart, no doubt about it.

+Shawn N. I was alive in the 70's when this song was first released. ABBA was in those days so bubble gum pop that they did not get the credit they deserved. They were strictly top 40 pop flavor of the week. I just heard this song for the first time in almost 40 years.....it is incredible. It's funny how time changes your perspective. On the same level as Dolly Parton's "I will always love you" or Sugarland's "Stay".

I found this song to be helpful after years of narc abuse. It's telling you to move on ,some things you can't change-nothing more to say. Abba are the best period.the tapestry of their songs can't be beat. They bring joy,and hope ,with realism.no other group in history has been so ultimately talented,after all they have sold more than 400 million albums,even Russia,south America ect . We all know Agnetha and Anni - Frid were fabulous singers and deserve the praise they have garnered. The music of ABBA is ageless.

+CassieJazz96 You are exactly right about Richard C. We have a lot to thank him for in the great music he and Karen left in our souls. Along those same lines in 1968 Elvis was going on 3 years without a big hit song and growing tired of making so-so movies. Enter Mac Davis from Lubbock Texas . Mac shows Mr. Presley "In the Ghetto", "Daddy Don't Cry" and "Memories". Elvis records all three and his career is back on track. Funny how life rolls out like that.

Abba really were a joint enterprise. In 1970/71, the two ladies were actually backing singers for Benny and Björn! They had not found their groove, their voice in their first year together. But they were patient. The average age of the group was near 30 by the time Abba had achieved a path to international success, in a language that was not their mother tongue. Frida and Agnetha were very nuanced, expressionist singers (in English!): not just about having a fabulous basic sound. I don't think Benny and Björn would have achieved the same success as song-writers, or have been as inspired, had they somehow hooked up with two lady singers other than the amazing Frida and Agnetha - so joint enterprise!

My mom LOVED this song and when my parents we're going thru some trying times...when I was a kid..(I was born 71) ..my mom always listened to this song. Definitely one of her favorites ever! My parents stayed devastatingly in love until the end, 60yrs together! ..but tragically, we lost my mom in June 2020. A Young 78. And my dad lost his whole world. This actually brings me bittersweet tears remembering my gentle and sweet mom listening to this and explaining to me how very exceptional the singers(Agnetha) voice truly is. 40 years on and this song still send shivers down my spine. Agnetha is one of the few singers who can cry with her voice when se sings. In the context of her painful divorce from Bjorn, how could they have asked her to sing those lyrics? But the pain in her voice is what makes this a masterpiece, despite the simplicity of the beautiful classical melody. Benny's piano is breathtaking and that line 'But you see...' ABBA, you had more magic in your fingernails than most of us have in our whole bodies, we love you!

"Agnetha is one of the few singers who can cry with her voice when she sings" I agree, though that is not surprising to me given that Agnetha's idol when she was starting out as a singer was Connie Francis (a master of "crying" a song). Anyone familiar with Connie's songs and career knows Agnetha couldn't have asked for a better "teacher" or role model when it comes to infusing pure emotion in a love / heartbreak song.

This song is quite simply the best pop song that has ever been written. When you consider the lyrics are written by a man whose native language is not English, yet they touch every one of us who has lost in love. Musically the concept of the song is quite simple in its structure but the melody, the harmonies and the arrangement in the verse that starts “but tell me does she kiss”....is breathtaking. Agnetha’s lead vocal is so emotional, so honest and so stunning. Sung faultlessly to such a high standard that we are highly unlikely to ever witness again.

What's extremely depressing to me about this song is the message is that we're not in control of our own fate or destiny, it's all luck. The metaphor of the gods sitting around a table playing games with your life is eerie. Even if everything is going well in your life, all it takes is for them to lose the game for you to lose something near to you, no matter how big or small. You are nothing more than a spectator of their games, reaping the winnings or losses.
@lawrenceshields8779
@lawrenceshields8779 3 жыл бұрын
I think you might have misunderstood the lyrics. What the true meaning is about someone realizing how their life, as they knew it, has been shattered to pieces. But, mostly that because you trust in the other, the other can abuse that trust. So, the feeling of the "gods" (actually, a reference to Greek mythology) is quite understandable, because Greek gods were sometimes quite cruel to humans. You get the clue that infidelity was the cause of the breakup in the line "Tell me, does she kiss the way I used to kiss you. Does it feel the same, when she calls your name". Anyone who has been cheated on knows what that is all about. This song is about a woman who feels out of control because her husband already has his future, while she has nothing. She didn't even know anything was wrong, which makes her feel small. She feels her life is now out of her hands. I hope that helps you understand it better. This is a great song.

Damn, I'm a metalhead too and it's kinda nice to see I'm not alone here. I'm not that huge on ABBA, but wow, they're actually really good. I think these kind of comments just go to show how much music can truly bring people together no matter how different their tastes may be.

To produce a song that describes the transience of love between partners with such perfection is a testament to Abba's incredible professionalism - and finally there was no winners, just losers at all. This song marks the end of the partnership between Agneta and Bjoern... But ABBA lifes forever!

+Edward Brewster I was a kid when this came out, but i also listened to this track uncountable times when i had my own horrible break up in 2010. Even though the lyrics make me sad, they are also logical and kind of relieving. Btw i not over her and i'll never be, since she was my soulmate. I moved on of course, but she was the one. Not only men have feelings, they're are even more sensitive than women. Women cry their eyes out after a break up for maybe 3 days (maximum), afterwards they're pushing the restart button and go on with a smile. Men are looking cool on the surface even though heartbreak eats their soul.

Looking at the pictures from the song makes me realise more of what life is actually about, how short life actually is, how beautiful life actually is, what every seconds counts meant, what time waits for none mean... Most importantly that life is all about being good, to be kind, to appreciate,to love genuinely, to spent more time with love ones, to laugh out loud to tears and cherish every moment.... Beautiful piece immortal ABBA 💚 15th Sept 2024 🌿

Hang in there brother. People have evil inside them, some people like your wife more than others. Doesnt matter if the evil manifests in a way of self importance or hurting people, its still evil and you should avoid it, but when you stumble upon it and only later discover its true nature, like in your case, you should spend time with your own thoughts then, talking to yourself and reasoning with yourself the nature of your situation, because if you dont allow evil to impact you mentally, you will defeat evil, literally. Please meditate on it, not in a traditional way, people try to empty their head when they meditate, but the exact opposite will benefit you way more. Just close your eyes when you are awake and think. Its better than any movie you can watch and its personal, beneficial and powerful. You can do it.
