51- year- old man here, haven't heard this song for several years until just now... and it broke me. The melody, the most beautiful angelic singing, and what the song is about, suddenly and unexpectedly broke me down. The power of music.... the power of ABBA's music especially...

I found this song to be helpful after years of narc abuse. It's telling you to move on ,some things you can't change-nothing more to say. Abba are the best period.the tapestry of their songs can't be beat. They bring joy,and hope ,with realism.no other group in history has been so ultimately talented, after all they have sold more than 400 million albums, even Russia, south America ect . They deserve all the adulation.

The fact that she sang and recorded this song while being heartbroken herself (recent divorced from his husband Bjorn), is what it makes this song so touching. She sang it from the bottom of her heart, no doubt about it.

+Shawn N. I was alive in the 70's when this song was first released. ABBA was in those days so bubble gum pop that they did not get the credit they deserved. They were strictly top 40 pop flavor of the week. I just heard this song for the first time in almost 40 years.....it is incredible. It's funny how time changes your perspective. On the same level as Dolly Parton's "I will always love you" or Sugarland's "Stay".

"But I was a fool.. playing by the rules"- this song's still giving the world chills. My mom LOVED this song and when my parents we're going thru some trying times...when I was a kid..(I was born 71) ..my mom always listened to this song. Definitely one of her favorites ever! My parents stayed devastatingly in love until the end, 60yrs together! ..but tragically, we lost my mom in June 2020. A Young 78. And my dad lost his whole world. This actually brings me bittersweet tears remembering my gentle and sweet mom listening to this and explaining to me how very exceptional the singers(Agnetha) voice truly is. Anyway...Thanks for the decades of incredible music ABBA. Y'all are EPIC.

This song is quite simply the best pop song that has ever been written. When you consider the lyrics are written by a man whose native language is not English, yet they touch every one of us who has lost in love. Musically the concept of the song is quite simple in its structure but the melody, the harmonies and the arrangement in the verse that starts “but tell me does she kiss”....is breathtaking. Agnetha’s lead vocal is so emotional, so honest and so stunning. Sung faultlessly to such a high standard that we are highly unlikely to ever witness again.

We all know Agnetha and Anni - Frid were fabulous singers and deserve the praise they have garnered. +CassieJazz96 You are exactly right about Richard C. We have a lot to thank him for in the great music he and Karen left in our souls. Along those same lines in 1968 Elvis was going on 3 years without a big hit song and growing tired of making so-so movies. Enter Mac Davis from Lubbock Texas . Mac shows Mr. Presley "In the Ghetto", "Daddy Don't Cry" and "Memories". Elvis records all three and his career is back on track. Funny how life rolls out like that.

Abba really were a joint enterprise. In 1970/71, the two ladies were actually backing singers for Benny and Björn! They had not found their groove, their voice in their first year together. But they were patient. The average age of the group was near 30 by the time Abba had achieved a path to international success, in a language that was not their mother tongue. Frida and Agnetha were very nuanced, expressionist singers (in English!): not just about having a fabulous basic sound. I don't think Benny and Björn would have achieved the same success as song-writers, or have been as inspired, had they somehow hooked up with two lady singers other than the amazing Frida and Agnetha - so joint enterprise!

40 years on and this song still send shivers down my spine. Agnetha is one of the few singers who can cry with her voice when se sings. In the context of her painful divorce from Bjorn, how could they have asked her to sing those lyrics? But the pain in her voice is what makes this a masterpiece, despite the simplicity of the beautiful classical melody. Benny's piano is breathtaking and that line 'But you see...' ABBA, you had more magic in your fingernails than most of us have in our whole bodies, we love you!

"Agnetha is one of the few singers who can cry with her voice when she sings" I agree, though that is not surprising to me given that Agnetha's idol when she was starting out as a singer was Connie Francis (a master of "crying" a song). Anyone familiar with Connie's songs and career knows Agnetha couldn't have asked for a better "teacher" or role model when it comes to infusing pure emotion in a love / heartbreak song.

Also, her divorce was just a year or a year & a half away when they recorded this song during the spring of 1980 & shot this video during the summer of 1980 on the swedish west-coast. Do you think Yngwie has some swedish melancholy left inside of him, if he ever had one? "Marching Out" (1985) is my favorite! His 1984 debut is a runner up!

Most importantly that life is all about being good, to be kind, to appreciate,to love genuinely, to spent more time with love ones, to laugh out loud to tears and cherish every moment.... Abba's "Super Trouper" album, where this comes from, was the first record I fell in love with. Ten year old kid sitting on the living room floor with a portable turntable. Just playing it over and over and over. Most themes (sorrow, heartbreak, longing, adult relationships...) went over my head, but the songs...I knew they were just beautiful, goosebumps everywhere. Over the years, I have been to the far corners of practically every musical genre. The noisiest of the noisy, abstract electronica, obscure indie, scorching, tectonic-plate-shifting metal, blistering free jazz wailing...you name it, I have listened to it and have been moved by it. But this...this is just a class of its own. A diamond. A pure, perfect, refined gem of a pop song. Even kept on some old drawer for years, it will shine like the first time the sun hit it everytime I open that drawer and pick it up. It's ingrained, now. I know it by heart. But still there's a mystery to it. Everytime I put it on, I know how the journey goes, but I can't help but marvel at the sights and the sounds every step of the way. Thank you for the music, Abba.

Ladies and Gentlemen: A masterpiece in pop history. The composition, the lyrics and the vocals are on point. It still makes me emotional. Just think about it: He wrote it and she sang it. For every songwriter, this song should be a benchmark for good music quality.

This song has everything! The haunting vocal performance that builds onto a most melodramatic and emotionally searing crescendo "but you see, the winner takes it all, the winner takes it all". Add to that the lyrics, the musical composition, instrumental backing and tender loving care of recording studio quality control! The greatest song ever!

Damn! That woman's got some pipes. It's tempting to dismiss their vocal talent when it gets buried in harmonies and fancy production, but then you hear a solo performance like this....Holy crap can she sing.

They have great voices also without production. There are many live recordings confirming this. The harmonies are actually one of the best features of the ABBA music in my view. Many people /bands have tried to copy it. Agnetha was a very popular singer already in Sweden in the late 1960’s before joining ABBA. They didn’t have autotune yet….

Possibly the most beautiful song ever written, particularly if you understand the back story about the relationships within the band. It is hard to listen to them performing this and not well up a bit as the emotions wash over you. The performance as always is flawless and full of emotion but even taken at face values it is still an amazing pop song. If you are an Abba fan, I highly recommend going to see Abba Voyage in London, I went in Jan 23 and was blown away, it is so realistic and I genuinely feel as though I finally got a chance to see them live and in their prime. As with everything Abba, it was delivered to absolute perfection.

When they appeared on stage.... I lost it. The tears flowed and I felt like I was watching them live on stage. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I just wish I could have been young enough to have seen them for real. I'm just so happy that they have had the chance to capture themselves like this - they will live on even longer and deservedly so. One of the best music acts to have ever existed

abbasolutely agree stephen. there have been some incredibly sad love songs, but this surely has to be in most people's top ten. no one, and i mean no one, can sing a sad love song as magnificently as our beloved agnetha. she sings the words like the earth angel that she is and you are right there along with her in every moment. incredible. and me and ten other family members are going to see the abba voyage concert. heard it's fantastic and we can hardly wait.
