I don't remember who said this, but there are always three levels to your playing: 1. WHAT you're playing 2. HOW you're playing it 3. WHY you're playing it Many people get stuck on the first level, which also means they're stuck in their thinking mind and conceptualizing while playing. Thinking a lot is not conducive to good feel/groove. If you want to groove, you need to be present, feel, and listen. Again, I don't remember who said it: "If you think, you stink". I also like the tip of listening/feeling IN BETWEEN the notes that you're playing. Another one is to play from your core (stomach/solar plexus area) and to also listen/feel for your inner clock there.

That's a surprisingly useful comment.

Vinnie made a similar comment about improvising fills/grooves. If you catch yourself thinking about everything without being present in the moment and actually listening to what you're playing, what the band is playing, than you've lost the plot. It should come from a state of flow. Which of course takes lots and lots of dedicated practice to learn and perfect new patterns, rudiments, etc.

Can’t stress the importance of subdividing internally enough. After watching your study the greats instalment on Dave DiCenso I started to check him out and eventually got his book “rhythm and drumming demystified” and the crux of that whole book is subdividing out loud and what a difference it has made on the way I perceive time as I’m playing. Great video Austin, always love your content.

3 Steps To Improve Your Groove: 1. Balance your dynamics - try inverting dynamics by playing louder on the snare and kick instead of on the hi-hat 2. Develop your rimshots - keep practicing it until you can play it consistently and access it any time you want 3. Subdivide internally - be aware of the 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16 notes; if the beat is fast focus on the 1/4, if it's slow focus on the 1/16 Bonus - Bounce your left heel to help you subdivide silently Thank you, great video 🙌

You are SPOT ON with your recommendations. However, I would add a couple of suggestions--first, use accents on the backbeats of two and four with the right hand, then you can use the shoulder of the stick for the right hand, or the tip for the non-accented notes, then shoulder for the accented notes. Either way, an accented right hand on two and four will help the groove. Lastly--don't SLAM the rimshots, but be relaxed and work for a nice sound.

When trying to lock in your rim shots, proper snare height should also be a consideration. It should feel somewhat natural to play at that level with your left hand regardless of your grip.

I’ve not had a drum lesson in around 7 years and only started playing again this year but in that time I was always playing beats in my head or tapping along on my legs/tables etc. I’m not too well versed on the theory side of drumming so didn’t really know too well how to explain but the subdividing internally is a great way to explain how I’ve been thinking about beats in my head. I was literally trying to explain that to my wife a couple days ago but couldn’t do it haha

Hello Austin, I subscribed to your channel because you give a serious teaching on our beloved instrument I wanted to know if you can show a jazz theme (bebop would be better) from the musical, not from the technical. I assure you that on KZbin you did not find such a video and it would be highly recommended that there be. That is, explain a play-along type of a complete theme from beginning to end, the intro, the bridges, the turns, etc. until the end. I think we are many drummers in the world that we can not understand, much less play perfectly some jazz, even listening to this music for a long time. Ok, sorry for the extension, it is my first comment, greetings from Argentina and thanks!

I love all the drummers that come to a drum lesson just to post their own “what you want to do is never be always to early with your second late floor tom grabs..” or “Don’t forget to remember this focused alternating step process for redivision of stick feel.” The most popular student forum for teachers!

I don’t get a chance to practice rim shots, but I do focus on dynamic control on the right hand as well as what I like to call subdivision management. Basically, I find the slowest possible subdivision in my head to count and feel out. From there, the groove finds itself super fast. Great content, man.

Love this channel, but i completely disagree with the "do rimshots" tip. Thats a surefire way to annoy the shit out of anyone else youd be jamming with, and it discourages playing the snare drum with any subtlety or dynamic range. Snare drums have so much more potential to be expressionistic than people make them seem
@Keplaffintech4 жыл бұрын
You can play rimshots quietly too. They have more attack than regular hits so they are crisper and cleaner.
@Elboy5224 жыл бұрын
You're telling me you've heard a drummer play a QUIET rimshot!?
@abbdrums4 жыл бұрын
I'm certainly not advising to play loud rimshots only at all times, but to develop rimshot precision and control so you can use them when it's appropriate. As drummers, we need to be able to feel the room out and augment our playing accordingly. So, if you're jamming with other musicians in a quieter setting, full on rimshots may not be the way to go. However, if you're in a stage or studio situation and you need to play a strong, driving rock groove, then powerful rimshots are definitely appropriate in my opinion. I've noticed that most beginners/intermediates don't have that rimshot control yet, so I think it's good for them to start developing that skill early so they can apply it when necessary.
@Elboy5224 жыл бұрын
@@abbdrums thats a great embellishment and explanation! I certainly think that rimshots are probably best suited for recording, where less gain in the snare mic can drastically reduce hihat bleed, but your other points make a lot of sense too. Thanks!
@kelinu964 жыл бұрын
@@Elboy522 I see loads of modern jazz drummers using quiet rimshots. Mark Guiliana, Richard Spaven, Ari Hoenig, JD Beck come to mind. Mind you they all use matched grip. I've never managed to get that short, dry, quiet sound rimshotting with traditional grip, but maybe I just need to practise more or maybe I'm approaching it wrong.

@@HughMorristheJoker yeah an alternative way of hitting the drum. It has nothing to do with the groove. The backbeat would be in the exact same place if it wasn't a rim shot
@HughMorristheJoker4 жыл бұрын
@@SpiffaJ but the way the back beat is played affects the groove. I mean it's all part of the groove
@SpiffaJ4 жыл бұрын
No it's not. It's literally just making a different sound on the snare for 2 and 4. You could play the backbeat on the floor tom it's still just a different sound in the exact same place. It's orchestration not groove
