haha I'm really bad with sheet music and this one-ee-and-ee-ööa--aa thing. As soon as you started playing this I was surprised that it was really familiar rhythm. I've been using this a long time in beats and fills. It's great. Love it.

I think a lot of drummers intuitively feel odd note groupings but if you really want to manipulate it creatively, it definitely helps to understand the technical framework underneath.

I’ve been following you for awhile with Study the Greats, but I’m really glad you’re doing some instructional videos. The transcript is great visuals are an easier way to learn. Try counting 12 123 12 123 as it progresses thru the chart. Austin is great at allowing us to be better players.

I really like to use this patter in conjunction with RlRlr just because it switches you to left hand lead at the end. Makes it really interesting to explore the kit.

I've been experimenting with this concept a bit in the last couple years and I agree it's fun to play around with and helps when creative block becomes a problem. 7 note groupings can add even more spice! Great video!

I dig your current way of displaying the notation graphic. I’ve been experimenting with groups of 5 but in the context of one bar of 4/4 as a fill because in pop amd praise/worship where I play the most I don’t have to play 5 measures of a 5 note grouping. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and knowledge. This tutorial is a great way to utilize 5 note groupings.

I've tried this a couple of weeks ago for the first time and I've found that mixing both of the variations of the beats you've showed sounds awesome during my practice sessions, you could try that too if you haven't already (accenting 1 and 3 in the first beat and then 1, 2 and 3 in the second)

Great vid, love the new transcription with the white over black. Made me go, “Oooo” before you even mentioned it. I like playing with RLLRR LRRLL w accenting the first note of each sticking w a kick.

Yea I use that sticking all the time! Smoothed out like a quintuplet but I hear/play it as a hand to hand triplet, just playing doubles between the accents.

Hi Austin. I found the counting actually easier if you count 1-2 1-2-3 in 16ths over the bar-line against the 4/4 quarter note pulse. Try it. :-)

That's easier but not better for keeping track of where you are in 4/4! You need to keep track of the beats and bars to really stay locked in.

Your approach and on screen style is very accessible. Great explanations and the on screen transcription is clutch! I have recently been working on the exact same concept except I am working on it as triplets. 5 beats of triplets = 3 groups of 5. When playing 4 bar phrases you can start the pattern on beat 4 of the 3rd measure and then it will end up back on beat 1 at the beginning of the 4 bar phrase. Playing over the pulse in the hi hat is definitely the most important part because otherwise its easy to lose the beat.

I like the new look of the on-screen transcription... nice to see a multi-bar phrase laid out as a block rather than the more familiar one/two bar scroll through. I love 5-note groupings and your orchestration(s) are nice and versatile. I agree it's good to count out all measures till it fully resolves on the one, to reinforce the note placement. Also great to practice 1/2/3.. measure variants and coming out on the "1" on any measure you choose.

Fantastic concept Austin, and great overlay. Very clean looking. I have a video idea for you though, given how incredible your traditional grip is, I think myself and a lot of people could learn from a breakdown on the key part of your grip on the stick, things like the purpose of the fingers and their optimal position on the stick for that. Also on playing confidently with it and keeping control at all tempos. Just an idea, keep up the good work :)

I can do RlRll and the RLRll on the snare and quarter notes foot on hihat, quite easily, but my mind is totally clueless where 1,2,3,4 are 🙃 Don't really know how to get my mind to understand how to incorporate it in a musical content. Orchestrate it around the kit with kick underneath might happen in a couple of decades or never 🤣 Really good and easy to understand lesson, by the way 🤗
