I listen this album obsessly when I was a kid. I think Gary Novak is a very underrated drummer. He is a monster of a drummer.
@DrSticktrick8 жыл бұрын
Really loved this lesson Austin. Not only because Gary is one of my absolute favorite drummers out there and the solo is amazing, but mainly because you totally nailed it and were able to give some real advice for people who might want to get into this.

Austin, I've never sent in a comment, but I've watched a LOT of your videos and both very impressed with your own abilities and with your curiosity and commitment to expanding other drummers' physical and mental skills along with furthering your own. --- As to this particular lesson, I didn't know anybody else who was hip to Gray Novak and this particular album in particular. Absolutely one of my favorites... even this very solo! Thanks for diving into it, and for just doing what you do. Cool, brother!

I totally dig how you're a humble dude. You're not at all bragging or trying to show off your chops, just trying to share this inspiring solo with all of us in the drum community. It's much appreciated brother.

This is one of your better lessons. I love it! Going over the note dynamics and how to keep ghosts notes feeling flowy and fluid really helped me understand the groove of some drum patterns a lot better. Excellent stuff! If I could recommend a drummer for you to do, it would be Matt Halpern of Periphery! His drum pattern at the beginning of the song "Make Total Destroy" is absolutely killer!

Dude.. this is synchronicity right here. I was just listening to this at the park while on a walk before.. this solo came on and I just had to sit down and replay it like 4 times trying to decipher this masterful playing.. I was just completely floored. I never understood why Novak doesn't seem to get as much mention as guys like weckl, vinnie etc... one of the most fluid and controlled drummers ever.. and of course completely tasteful. I've heard him kill it on simple backbeat/groove stuff too... amazing feel all around. Thanks for this man! Love your content!

Austin, this one is indeed a greeeeeeaaaat lesson! Not to mention this is without a doubt Gary's best performance recorded. This album, as you said, is a true master piece, and this song, in particular, is beautiful! Very tasteful choice, since not so many people know this record. Congrats for the amazing work, mate! Cheers from Brazil!

Absolutely spot on about the use of dymanics, Austin. Surely this is what sets the greats like Gary apart from the rest of us mere mortals. The textural qualities they are able to create allow the music to breathe around the drum part. And if I might say, I think you absolutely nailed the solo.

I love your videos man, you do such an excellent job at trying to stay true to the solos you're breaking down, and it's very obvious that it requires a lot of your time and skill to produce these videos. Despite how humble you are about your own skills, I think you're doing things right and also paying great tribute to the drum legends that you're analyzing. Definitely subbed, and definitely going to binge-watch all of your videos to soak up as much as I can (and in the rare hope of finding a lick I'll actually be able to play haha). You're doing great man, I hope you are able to continue on in this endeavor!
