Excellent way to present the lesson. Breaking it down in to phrases and learning the "motions"! The motions of the sticks, hands arms make the sound. All about the motions!

This beat sounds cool when playing every quarter note with the hihat and then playing the lick over and over as a polyrhythm. That would sound cool in a solo

Hey there Austin, I know you have covered a Mark Guliana lick in a prior video but I was curious to see if you have seen the video of him playing with Donny McCaslin on a tune called "Stadium Jazz". He plays this groove under the melody that is very syncopated and interesting. I'd love to see a break down of that since I haven't seen anyone on youtube really look at it. Killer video btw!

Austin, thanks for the fantastic break down. But can you tell me.... These notes are not flams but more like Malfs? It looks to me that the down beat is the right hand and the left hand flam is after the 1. Can you confirm this? Thanks Wez

I'm always experimenting with my setup. I think I've learned that I prefer my cymbals a little higher and more angled towards me rather than low and flat... more old school fusion style. I'm about to revamp my setup again for 2018 though, so stay tuned for that!

It's very hard to see here if Vinny uses rL of lR on the first flam of the pattern (Probably because he caught us all off-guard by not wearing his signature glasses and having long hair). What I DO see is that it's actually not a real flam, because the volume of the "ghosted note" is very loud and the stick height is on the high side. It doesn't sound like "malfs", just two loud hit placements close together, "like" a flam. Knowing Vinny's reputation, this is probably on purpose... I say: practise both variants, low flam AND loud hit. Alternating the sticking patterns :-)
