The fills are incredible, naturally, but it's that groove that Vinnie lays down that blows my mind. The consistency of the dynamics in those hi hat barks throughout the whole song is inhuman.😅

It's funny you should mention that. The jazz drummer Ralph Peterson in one of his instructional videos on You Tube said that learning different instruments made him a better drummer. One of the other instruments he plays is trumpet - he's very good on that too.

@@RhymesWithCarbon Agreed. While guitarists and singers are notoriously envious of other players, we drummers usually do not care about the negative crap. We are likely to compliment someone, when they play something nice, no matter what instrument is being played. 🤝

I'm sure if VINNE sat in without a rehearsal he would read off straight away, great sound the band {trombones}
@jas_bataille3 жыл бұрын
@@mortonthomasbayliss9177 I'm sure he read that straight away with no rehearsal actually. If you look at this face and pay attention, he was reading the whole, he even counted a bar out loud. He was very careful with certain parts, only giving it his all during the fills. Other than that, he simplified his played a whole lot, especially during the part where he played snare+floor tom on 2 and 4 only. Surely there is a better level of drum arrangement here than in most big bands, but still, he decidedly kept it extremely safe. I would be you serious money Vinnie *was actually sight-reading*. It's not the hardest big-band piece in the world. I couldn't sight read it that good, but he kept a lot of silence on purpose, to not waste anyone's time in case the arranger wouldn't be happy with something more complex, and it serves the song. Only his fills were 90-95% of his ability, and that's fine, that's great. His timing wasn't the best here either. You can tell a lot of them are sight-reading, the guitarist too. Big band stuff is *mental*, you spend more time annotating sheet music you're gonna sight-read than actually rehearsing, because you need to sync 15-20 people. It's a LOT of sight-reading and the budgets are nowhere near those of a classical orchestra, and not proportional, even if it's much smaller than a full-size symphonic orchestra of course. Vinnie did a great job as always. He was professional. Those fills were unmistakable and the rest was what to expect of a good studio pro :) Not his best performance but he's always getting the job done and driving the band.
