The Monmouth Rebellion, also known as the Pitchfork Rebellion, the Revolt of the West or the West Country rebellion, was an attempt to overthrow James II in the 1600s. The Duke Of Monmouth rallied 4000 plus men, many of whom travelled from their homes in rural Somerset to join the cause.
The Liberty Trail runs for 28 miles from Ham Hill to Lyme Regis, following in the footsteps of many of these rebels. Abbie set out to walk the route and along the way passed through tranquil hamlets, by old mills, manor houses, ancient churches, abbeys and much, much more...

Thank you for the video. My forefather, John Chilcot(t or e) from Stocumber Somerset was a rebel who joined Monmouth. After the rebellion was ended, John was placed into slavery and sent to Barbados.

Me and my dad are walking the Liberty Trail because of watching your video! We are doing it for a charity 7 days ago we walked Ham Hill to Clapton farm and then stopped for the day as we are 2 un- fit people. And tomorrow we are going to finish it 🤞🏻 if we haven't seen a trail sign in a while dad keeps going we're on the right way as I saw that in her video 😆 fair play to you for getting to Lamberts Castle in one day!! Goodness me!

Loved this - thank you! I say this in part because I had been to these areas during my UK visit. Stayed at Clapton Farm. I remember getting bottles of milk from the farm, and they had hot air ballooning in the summer twilight up on the hill. Crewkerne and Lyme Regis are places I visited, but you’ve shown me more than I remember experiencing - it was getting on thirty years ago now. I don’t know where the journal is, and before digital photography, prints were at a premium, otherwise I would have a lot more of those memories. I was really glad you went back to film the end of the trail and the different times of day made it even more interesting. Got to love the ex phone booth being made into a book swap too! Look forward to your next trail. 🥾🥾

Thanks very much for sharing Abbie. It must be fun and relaxing to walk the country side and through the villages. South west England has character. And did I hear that right? Poop Hill? I appreciate your words at the end. I think about those kinds of things every day but continue to look for answers. At least there’s coffee.

So reassuring that someone so experienced in UK walks can (i) go offtrail without meaning to, and (ii) feels a little selfconscious when walking through farmland and farm buildings. I don't think I'll ever get used to what would be trespass here in Australia. Also, wtf are emus doing in Somerset??!!

That would keep parliament busy....deciding if those major 🐄 farms are indeed cruelty to animals and outlawing that type of "cow farm", especially as the video shows how sufficient the local population already is.

Eggshell is from blackbird ? (Turdus merula)
@tanagerbirder
@tanagerbirder 4 жыл бұрын
The egg looks too small for a blackbird and not uniformly speckled. I think it's more likely to be a dunnock
@jeanpauldebaene
@jeanpauldebaene 4 жыл бұрын
@@tanagerbirder Isn't the egg of a dunnock unspeckled, a bit like the egg of a songtrush (Turdus turdus), but smaller ? Difficult to decide on a film. But Abbie will know it, I suppose.
@tanagerbirder
@tanagerbirder 4 жыл бұрын
@@jeanpauldebaene You are quite correct Jean-Paul, that dunnock eggs are unspeckled. However I think the marks on this are from contamination. The egg has been robbed probably by a magpie not hatched as the cuts on the shell would be symetrical and would be circular had a chick opened it. It is also too small for a blackbird which has extensive grey speckling all over it.
@jeanpauldebaene
@jeanpauldebaene 4 жыл бұрын
@@tanagerbirder And here you are also quite correct, Steve. I have lots of magpies in my region and indeed the specs are contamination. In the wild I had seen it at first blink. Leaves us with the question : the egg of a songtrush (Turdus turdus) ? We can not measure it, but compared with Abbie's fingers (athletic !!), ..... . Abbie, help us out please ! You know the answer
@tanagerbirder
@tanagerbirder 4 жыл бұрын
@@jeanpauldebaene The eggs of Song Thrush have black dots so this just leaves us with Dunnock. Interesting discussion though.

Poor old Duke of Monmouth. I could have told him that when you're Duke of a one post office town in the middle of nowhere, a rebellion probably isn't going to end well. Wait, you do mean Monmouth, Kansas, right? 😁
