I think it's also worth mentioning what just happened to me. I purchased ISBNs from Bowker. They have an upsell page for copyrighting your book. They claim they're giving you discount by charging you $85 and they'll take care of the entire process. Well, I did it. They took my money, and I STILL had to pay the $65 filing fee. In other words, they ran off with my $85 and saved me about.... 5 minutes of headache. Wow. Don't do it. Their page is title "CopyrightsNow!" which is a property of DigiRights. I'm sharing this in the hopes that some of you that are thinking of purchasing your ISBNs through Bowker, DO NOT purchase the Copyright upgrade. They literally don't do anything for you other than ripping you off by claiming they're saving you bit of time.

I am so glad you made this video. I have seen so many people in writer’s group who believe that simply putting your work in print is a copyright protection. In America (since the UK is a little different on this), only a “registered” copyright is recognized in a courtroom in the event someone infringes on your copyright.

Again, you did a fantastic job making this video. With that said, I do have a couple of questions I hope you or someone else will answer. 1: What file format should I use when I upload my book? A word doc? An ebook? A PDF? What do you recommend? 2: I've seen books that have a copyright catalog or control number included on their copyright page. I was told that this is important because it validates that your work is indeed registered in the Library of Congress. Your thoughts? Again, thank you for making this video. It showed me what to expect when it's time for me to submit my book. :)

Thanks for the video Abbie. :D Really interesting topic. I'm from Germany and looked this up for my country. In Germany, your work will automatically be protected by copyright, the day you start writing. You don't really have to do anything else. If you really want to be sure, you have to hire a notary and deposit the work there... but that will cost a lot. :) So for EU you don't have to register your work.

New to your videos. Between you, Jerry Jenkins, and K.M.Weiland, I'm confident that I'll be able to confidently make the transition from screenwriter to book author. This video is a godsend as I have been wondering about this for a while. Questions - 1) If you use a pen name, is there a place for it when you apply for a copyright? 2) Does registering your book with the WGA provide sufficient protection? If it's good enough for a screenplay then why not? 3) The moment you register your copyright, is that when you can then use it, or do you have to wait for the letter? 4) Who puts the copyright in the book, you or the publisher? Thanks a million.

Great video. Just one thing regarding copyright is that you already have it. You should officially register as Abby is suggesting, but you should know your work is already protected. In many countries, including the United States, once you have created a novel in tangible form (such as writing it down or saving it to your computer), it is automatically protected by copyright. This means that your novel is protected by copyright law, even if it is not officially registered with the Copyright Office or does not use the copyright symbol (©). This automatic protection gives you certain exclusive rights, such as the right to copy, distribute, display and perform your work. Although copyright protection is automatic, there are advantages to registering your novel with your country's copyright office. Registering your work gives you additional legal protection and makes it easier to defend your rights in the event of infringement. For example, registration in the US is usually required if you want to sue for copyright infringement.

I have 4 questions. 1) Do I have to first publish my book to register copyright? 2) When it comes to copyright, do I have continue to renew it or once I’ve registered is it forever? 3) In books there’s usually a page with copyright and other publishing details. Is there a specific way to do that or do we just say that it has been copyrighted? 4) Do we have to pay to watch the Masterclass video to format a book? Thanks!
@cnlicnli
@cnlicnli 2 күн бұрын
@Writer_reader_1 wrote, 1) Do I have to first publish my book to register copyright? No. If your book is completed, you can register it as an “un-published” work prior to publishing it. Or you can register it as a published work but NO later than THREE-months of its FIRST-date of publication (to preserve many of your legal rights). I generally register my works as un-published works. Just don’t register your un-published work on a Wednesday, and on that VERY Wednesday, officially publish it; wait two full days before listing/publishing your book (otherwise, you may have a defective registration) 2) When it comes to copyright, do I have continue to renew it or once I’ve registered is it forever? Once you’ve registered an un-published or published book, you do NOT have to re-register it. Your copyright will last for your life plus 70-years (upon your death, you can assign your copyright to your heirs and others). If, however, you’ve made “substantive” changes to your original work, then you should quickly complete the $65 Standard Application and record those updates as a “derivative” work with the US Copyright Office. 3) In books there’s usually a page with copyright and other publishing details. Is there a specific way to do that or do we just say that it has been copyrighted? This is beyond my background. I would, though, include the following ROBUST copyright attribution if my work was registered with the US Copyright Office: * Registered Copyright © < URL and/or social media link/s and/or handles>.

Does anyone have advice on whether or not a manuscript should be copyrighted before it's sent to strangers through online writing groups and online editors? I'm still working on my manuscript, but I'm part of an online writing group. I plan on copyrighting it before sending it out to people in the writing group for feedback since many of them are strangers. Then after getting feedback, making adjustments, and sending it to my editor, I plan on copyrighting it again as the "officially finalized manuscript." Would that be an exception to the rule of "only copyrighting the officially finalized manuscript"?
@cnlicnli

To obtain the strongest copyright protection, you should register your works before “shopping” it around to editors, publishers, writing group, contests, friends, and others. If, after you’ve received feedback and you want to update your manuscript, you can register those new changes via the $65 Standard Application. To save money on copyright registration filing fees, and if your work qualifies, it may only cost you $45 to register your original version via the *Single Application* (aka, “One Work By One Author”). See this link: www.copyright.gov/circs/circ11.pdf Write back if you’d like to receive US Copyright Office video tutorials links on how to prepare the Single & Standard Applications.

If, however, your “literary” work is intended to be performed for an audience, then you should register it as a Performing Arts (PA) work of authorship. You can also contact the US Copyright Office for clarification

Love and be careful with your rights to your creative work. It is imperative that you own the copyright to your creative work at all times. Even if you must be an anonymous creator, there must be someone on the other side that have your interests covered that you trust. If not, that precious creative flame that gives wealth, culture, and prosperity to all can flicker and disappear. Keep it safe.

11:21 Skipping that step... Would I complete this step if I am quoting from other sources in my book (but have their permission)? Or is this section referring to our own preregistered materials?

@Emunah13819 wrote, “Would I complete this step [Limitation of Claim] if I am quoting from other sources in my book (but have their permission)?” If your book includes creative materials you did NOT create (including licensed & un-licensed materials, Creative Commons, AI, Public Domain, etc.) OR you’re including content that you’ve previously registered with the US Copyright Office, then you need to include that information in the “Limitation of Claim” section of your on-line copyright registration application. So, to answer your question, you would “disclaim” (identify and/or list) third-party (licensed) quotes included in your book in the Limitation of Claim section. In the “Certification” section of the on-line application, there’s a box (near the bottom) to send the USCO (aka the Registration Specialist who will review your copyright claim) a short note *(no more than 1900 characters/spaces).* If necessary, you can describe (in more detail) that you’re disclaiming third-party quotes from your registration; you can also briefly list the authors of those works. @Emunah13819 wrote, “Or is this section referring to our own preregistered materials?” If “preregistered materials” means YOUR previously published works, then yes, include/list those published works in the Limitation of Claim section. Most often, a short description works well. If you have questions, include a note in the Certification section. If you require more space, you can also upload a separate WORD document when you upload your book deposit.

Which program do you use for book typesetting? (I hope that's the right word for it. I mean this task as an indie author where you set the font size and typeface, the margins and design the chapter headings etc.) I want to do it on my own, but I'm not quite sure how.

I feel like if the book I’m writing works out, it will likely take me two or three years to actually finish, including all the not fun steps like this. I feel like a few years from now, I’ll be sitting down with my dad as he explains copyright and how to do it and such, and then he’ll likely get frustrated at the computer for being slow or ‘stupid.’ I love my dad. Thank you for the video btw! I have no way of knowing if writing a book right now will work out, but if it does, I will definitely be looking back at this video for help 😂😂😂

What if you use a pen name/pseudonym, do you use that when filing your copyright or your actual name or both? Or does that also depend on where in the world you are?
