I agree, what a great family, those kids were lucky to have such loving parents. Check out the bracelet on Lou's wrist, it has "Butch" on it. He had it welded on after Lou junior drowned, as a reminder. A few hours after Butch drowned Bud and Lou went on and did their radio show, Lou insisted so that Butch up in heaven could smile. As soon as it ended a broken Lou sped home while a devastated Bud broke down and wept, he was only able to hold it together during the show because it would have broken Lou even further not to.

There was such a sweetness about Lou Costello. Even though he was going for the laugh in a scene, you could tell he was a kind & gentle soul. He left an indelible mark on this world.

This was a very fine gift from you, thanks a million - it got my dopamine running and my endorphins dancing… The boys were truly a healing balm of humor in my youth back in the mid- 50’s - and I wasn’t alone. ‘Louie Costello’ was a demigod between my siblings and I… Those guys took off a lot of stress and fear that existed for us, it’s good to see the lives that Bud, and more particularly, lived. A very compelling portrait of a complicated comic genius - among the greatest of the 20th Century… Again, a million thanks to you

I have run across many accounts of adults who had terrible childhoods, saying that Bud & Lou's movies were the lone bright spot in their lives, something to look forward to while enduring emotional and physical abuse, they felt safe for 90 minutes while watching Bud and Lou's latest Universal release. Its tragic that even today many children just endure without saying anything, thru misguided loyalty.

The sequence of Lou Costello singing & Abbott telling the set designer to go higher with the scenery & Costello thinking he was being told to sing higher was a skit used modified -- in the TV series Taxi. When Jim (Christopher Lloyd) was taking his driver's test & kept asking his friends "what does a yellow light mean?" His friends would whisper "go slower." And he said the same question to them slower...and slower each time they repeated the "answer" that the yellow light meant to slow down. Hilarious version with A&C and hilarious with the minor adjustment in the 70s.

I have the TV series and radio shows on an old phone I use as a MP3/MP4 player, their radio shows are brilliant, especially when lou or bud (mostly lou) forgets where they are up to, when lou interacts with the audience and you hear the laughter, it's as if you are with them.

I believe I lived across the street from Lou Costello's house on Longridge in Sherman Oaks in the 90's. My brother owned the house and told stories of how Lou Costello would hand out candy to the kids. It must have been at Christmas time. I think the neighbor directly across from Lou's house told my brother the stories because he lived in his house a long time. When I was there the Olsen twins lived next door to Lou Costello's house across from us. It's nice to know that Lou Costello made such an impression on his neighbors that they would remember the stories. Both were comic genius's. "Who's on First" is making the rounds on KZbin with young people reacting to it. I haven't heard a negative reaction yet.

She doesn’t know. They were trying to save money. The cast, even the chimp were let go. The intro which used clips licensed from universal, was dropped. A simple theme played by a small band was used. Scripts were written to be shot quickly. Sets were very simple and used repeatedly. A simple room would be used for a number of places; a business office, reception, a doctors office, anything. They borrowed bits off of the movie scripts saying that either Sid Fields wrote them, or the boys had done them before they worked in films. Lou basically bank rolled these shows.

This was a delightful post. Although, the somewhat "embarrassment", in one of Lou's daughter's voice, when admitting to her dad as being a Republican. I found that terribly bias & disturbing. Lou was on the "right" team. No need for her to hang her head in shame. R.I.P. Lou.
@jerseymike79465 ай бұрын
The straight man always got top billing in comedy teams, as well as getting 55% of the take. That may sound odd but the reason is a great straight man is one who understands comedy, who while having the ability to be the 'funny guy' of the pair, instead sets up the 'funny guy' to get all the laughs. Thats much harder to do than making double takes and pratfalls and funny reactions. Jerry Lewis or Lou could never do the straight man part, it's the more highly skilled position and is recognized as such by comedy pros. Saying that takes nothing away from Lou's genius. Later in their careers Lou resented getting the lesser cut so Abbott agreed to 50/50.
