Lol, I love that they hit you in the face with the metaphor with what seemed like irrelevant banter in the beginning. It's about how if you do something crazy (use a apple to catch a fish) and somehow manage to succeed you should just pocket the winnings. Costello 'let's it ride' and uses his winnings to try to win even more! He keeps doing that until he's underwater like a degenerate gambler.

When Costello falls into the water and calls out to his partner, something unseen drags him underwater for a few seconds. How many of you thought of Jaws in that moment?

They stole this from the Three Stooges, they stole a lot of stuff from them, Moe was going to sue them at one point

Man this is absolutely hilarious! I can't believe they don't make stuff like they used to these days, they should, it's ridiculously funny. This is a whole different breed than what we're used to in the 21st century! I know what i'll be putting on for my kids to watch.
@ryancorrell689512 жыл бұрын
This sketch has a long history. It was done first by Buster Keaton in his short silent film "Hard Luck". THEN The Three Stooges performed the bit in the 1930s. Then it was Abbott and Costello. And this was not the first or last time A&C took from the Stooges. Moe always claimed that a lot of Costello mannerisms were lifts straight from Curly

Technically, it was the writers who reused bits. Often their own bits that they put in different things over the years. In this case, Clyde Bruckman who also wrote the Stooges short it was in and probably contributed to the Keaton short. Also, Moe Howard only said there were some similarities between Curly and Lou Costello. He never said mannerisms were lifted directly from him. Both comedians were brilliant in their own ways.
@ryancorrell68954 жыл бұрын
@@joefurey9619 that's true, especially about Bruckman and writers lifting old jokes for the Stooges... but I read a book by Joan Howard Maurer that revealed there was a bit more animosity towards Costello, at least to Moe's point of view. I'll look it up sometime, and if I remember I'll quote it here. I could be wrong though!
@joefurey96194 жыл бұрын
@@ryancorrell6895 Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was something that got mis-interpreted throughout the years stemming from a picture in the book where Moe said, Curly looks amazingly like Lou Costello in a photo. Moe WAS somewhat envious of Abbott and Costello because they were in features, which he always wanted the Stooges to do, but Columbia kept them in shorts (until years later). And Shemp actually appeared in several Abbott and Costello movies- and was friendly with them.
