I found the little stubby SRH805S works really well on my Baofeng. My house is a bit of a black hole for any kind of signal it seems, I get crap signals on anything when I'm indoors. I tried a few different antennas and had mixed success. Oddly enough, I had really, really good success with that little guy. I was able to pick up the repeater in Detroit I could never get worth a crap. I've also dorked around with one of those cheap LNA chips and found that works amazingly well too. But I'll have to pick up one of these antennas as well, give it a shot. I also need to work on getting a license so I can actually use the transmitter for once, lol.

@@TheSmokinApe I broke a SMA male /male adapter in testing within a half hour - and it was a good pasternak one. I reinforced another with fuel line and that spread the footprint enough to prevent it . The leverage broke the battery retention tabs on the base of the of the chicom radio I used for the field strength testing. It would be bad news bears to have it damage the radio If I was counting on it. It is a true 5/8 wave 3dbd antenna @ VHF so the performance is there. I built a ground plane kit for mine and connected it with a section of feedline. Elevated over said ground plane it really did well. Video forthcoming on that project.

SurvivalComms I’ll check out the video. I did one as well with some basic testing and found the antenna performs well. In a “survival situation” the last thing I would want is an antenna that put my radio at risk. Folks were reporting on my video that the antenna is directional as well, which makes sense, but wasn’t something I noticed.
@survivalcomms
@survivalcomms 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheSmokinApe I am pretty sure the directional component is due to interaction with the body. I could get it to null as well but no more than most HT antennas. I have a legacy telescoping 5/8 wave antenna that was made for the MX350 (they made them for the Bendix King EPH as well) . It is a real piece of art - machined and hand built in the USA and had a price tag to match way back when. It actually is tuneable once you remove the data plate to access the screws beneath. The downside to it back then was that it would break the housing and frame and the MX connector is pretty doggone robust. What is old is new again :)

What you would do if your hiking or bring it with you. Is on your pack attach it to the back inside the bag if you can or a split bag design. Using a BNC connector and a cable to go to your radio. But that’s if you need the crazy range I guess. But you can secure it very well to the bag. Or using a weight on the bottom of it. But honestly I wouldn’t attach this thing to the body and using it anywhere outside of stationary. Bnc via a cable is way better. Change the bnc adapter or cable instead of breaking your hw

I just purchased one from Amazon when it comes in I will test it out against a mfj long ranger antenna and 42 inches long it is metal telescoping and can be used in it’s collapsed form. Diamond also makes a longer antenna at 54 inches long and can also be used in collapsed form . Not saying it’s a bad antenna just saying there are other long antenna’s out there. One thing is those antenna’s I mentioned are for 2 meters only. Good video 73’s

I use the 18.8 inch ABBREE, on a TYT UV8000E HT, that has a transmit power of ten watts. With no problems. As for SWRs, on 146.775, I get 1.17, on 449.300 I get a SWR of 1.08, and I tested it three times. I also tested it against a Nagoya NA 771, and the Nagoya lost. I am lucky, I live near both of those repeaters, so transmitting from inside my mobile home is no problem. I also use the TYT with the ABBREE antenna on my bike and it works very well. Will I get the 42.5 inch long one, probably not.

How about a piece of coax 1-2ft long, with one SMA Male, to SMA Female then feed antenna through molle webbing carrier and attach coax between radio and antenna. What's the SWR on antenna? What you think about that
@Iridium242
@Iridium242 4 жыл бұрын
Already have that coax threaded though my plate carrier for a different antenna, so yeah this would work perfectly with that. SWR was around 1.2 -1.5 on 440 and on vhf 1.3-1.5

I'm so confused about antennas. I want to build a dipole, like in We Were Soldiers, to use my Baofeng BF-F8HP (or even UV5R). According to all the sources I have found it will have to be a determained length (I'll leave it at that to spare those in the know of repetition). So, how is it that I can buy various lengthed antenna, and so far, the more length the better?.

Great review, but on ebay UK and Amazon, Abbree are selling a 108cm for 27mhz with bayonet fitting but on the coil at the bottom it says 136 to 520 mhz , what are your thoughts on this. Surely it should say 27mhz on the coil. I have messaged Abbree and I'm waiting on a reply. Any ideas. Do you think that the coil could be wound differently ,but they just don't change the machine that moulds the print. ? Regards ,thanks in advance. Andy.

Bottom line is that these antennas are gimmicks. They are designed to mimic the look of of PRC military radio antennas giving the naive hams the impression that bigger is better. The overall length is not resonant at all in both the 2 meter and 440 bands. The matching network in the base consists of a multi turn coil tapped in two places with two ceramic capacitors. Sweeping the antenna shows it is matched at 138 MHz and the gain drops considerably at its harmonic overtones. At 440 MHz gain is minus 12 dB, a four fold loss over a quarter wave whip. It has ‘some’ gain at 2 meters as it’s designed to work as a 5/8 length antenna. Cutting an inch off the whip will resonate it back into the 2 meter range and it would work even better than it does now, but only at 2 meters. It actually needs a proper ground counterpoise to work effectively as a 5/8 wave antenna. Simpler folks might become enamoured by its appearance to the military style of PRC radio antennas but that’s where the similarities end. PRC radios operate from 30 to 80 MHz, a 50 MHz bandwidth. The reason that PRC antennas work over this range is that PRC radios have built in antenna tuners to resonate whatever is stuck on to them. That’s why they can operate folded up or extended. Your Baofeng, Icom, Yaesu radios do not have built in automatic antenna tuners and so cannot properly resonate these antennas. Your best bet is to forgo the sparkly look and appeal of these types of antennas and carry two different resonant antennas for both two meters and 440. As a side note, Larsen used to make a heavy vhf gain antenna with sma connector and I was forever replacing the broken end-launch sma connectors and circuit boards on commercial Icom radios back in the 80’s. It should be obvious to all that in short time the weight fatigue of the Abbree antenna will crack off the internal ends inside your radio and housing. Don’t be dazzled into appearances and false claims, this is not a military grade antenna and your radio is not designed to compensate for complex conjugate impedances.
