A woman in West Sacramento is on a mission to make housing more affordable for herself and pave the way for others to do the same through a "Movable Tiny Home Policy".
33-year-old West Sacramento resident Robyn Davis has lived in her tiny home on wheels made out of a shipping container for the last five years and for the last two years on an undeveloped residential piece of land she owns in West Sacramento.

This problem has been getting worse in California for many years. The reason builders can't build affordable homes in California is because of red tape. It all boils down to city and county fees. The fees to build a home are ridiculous. They don't want you to build tiny homes because they don't get their fees. Until the fees are adjusted and capped this will not get better. City Government is out of hand! They are completely ruining this state. Stop all the ridiculous regulations! Period!

Any city could actually get MORE property tax money because you can fit more small homes on small lots and then charge a minimum property tax. Think mobile home park where you OWN that small lot and just pay some property taxes vs getting financially raped paying an ever-increasing lot rent. I lived in a mobile home park near Detroit for 18 years. I was paying enough in lot rent every two years to pay for that small lot. In other words, the mobile home park was getting a 50% return on their investment every year. And talk about entitlements. They raised the lot rent just over 5% a year while I lived there. They offered me $3000 for my 14X52-foot singlewide after I retired and decided to move it. It was any easy decision to move it. I had just put Mr. Roof's best singles on. It was a complete tear off with total ice guard. I had all the plumbing replaced with copper tubing to replace the polybutylene. Polybutylene pipes will leak. It's not a matter of if, but just when. It cost $10K to prepare my lot, move the singlewide here and then place it on the lot. That included putting in a new water line and going underground with the electric. The quarter acre lot itself cost $12,500. So, I was all in for $22,500. I was immediately saving $3000 a year compared to paying lot rent vs paying property taxes here. And remember, that lot rent just continues to go up and up and up.

I'm coming home to Sacramento to build 2 tiny homes for myself and my sister. its going to happen no matter what we have to go through or pay. The govt needs to find another cash cow. Financial freedom can be obtained with housing and transportation taken care of. They don't want us comfortable.

I"m all for it. Common sense says let her put it on her land. Why can't she put a tiny home on her land when you let all those homeless people sleep on the street? Doesn't make any sense what so ever. City government and their zoning laws are ridiculous and needs to be changed. Doesn't any human being in the city have any common human decency to change these stupid zoning laws for the betterment of the people and society?

Our Declaration of Independence clearly states that we ALL have the self-evident, inalienable rights to LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Shelter is a necessity of life. This lady should be allowed to be happy living in her small home. Where is the ACLU? Where is the outrage? I'd love to see 1000 homeless vets come to her defense and advocate for themselves at the same time. This is definitely a violation of her civil right to simply exist ON HER OWN PROPERTY IN HER OWN HOME. And her home is not a threat to anyone's else's health or safety. So, not allowing her to live as she is asking is a misapplication of the police power as well as a violation of her freedom and a violation of the golden rule. They aren't saying people can't live in big, expensive homes, so, they shouldn't be saying she can't live in her small home. This whole housing thing is so out of control. Anybody can stick a sign in the ground that says, 'this is a restricted community' and then make any restrictions they want. That is just as wrong as wrong can be. Your rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness should never be up for any vote by anyone. FREEDOM DOES NOT MEAN THE FREEDOM TO TAKE AWAY SOMEONE ELSE'S FREEDOM. Can't some lawyer take her case on a pro-bono basis? This is a disgrace. We are ALL Americans, worthy of dignity and respect.

It cuts housing costs in half? Only?! It should cut it by 90%.

Yes. And in the current market, a new legal "tiny home on wheels" is around $90k or more. By the time you pay for lot rent and/or permits, it's really expensive. Unless you have the skills to DIY.

@@eh3477 Interesting. One would think a place one tenth a regular home (or less), should cost way less than half the cost of a regular house.

Most legal "Tiny Homes" are on trailers which are equivalent to RV size. They should fit into rules for RVs. Having said that, most municipalities have significant restrictions for living in RVs too.

When the entire town of Paradise, CA, burned down there were some people living in an RV on THEIR cleared-off, burned-out lot. Someone came by and told them that living in an RV was not allowed. That is just as wrong as wrong can be. I've been asking Harris to double down on freedom. When it comes to any woman, it is her body, her life, her money, her choice and nobody else's business. Well, when it comes to your home, it is your home, your money, your life, your choice and nobody else's business. Period.

@@hermanjamersFor better or worse, those are county and local statutes in most states which prevent people living in RVs on their own property. I'd start there.

@@eh3477 Our Declaration of Independence clearly states that we ALL have the self-evident, inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Shelter is a necessity of life. She is not doing anything that threatens anyone's health or safety. So, the city's rule against her doing that is a misapplication of the police power and is therefore null and void. Your self-evident, inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness should NEVER be subject to any vote or restriction as I have outlined. Freedom does NOT mean the freedom to take away someone else's freedom. We fought a Civil War to confirm that point. So, let's start there. Where is the ACLU? Where is the outrage from all of us who have freedom and the golden rule as our bedrock principles? These are the bedrock principles this country was founded on.

We need what I am calling The Housing Freedom Restoration Proclamation (president) or Act (congress). It simply says, as long as a home is not a threat to anyone's health or safety, then any restriction against that home is a misapplication of the police power and is therefore null and void. But as this story shows, any city could to this. West Sacramento not hooking up her utilities is as wrong as wrong can be. Keep fighting. I have been advocating by making comments such as this, posting on my Facebook page and contacting candidates since I retired at 59 in Oct 2008 after losing my job and moving my singlewide OUT of a mobile home park near Detroit, where I lived for 18 years. This freedom would be priceless and would not add anything to the deficit. People would be able to get their OWN affordable housing on their OWN. Throwing money at this problem will NOT STOP THE HOUSING STEAL. Rent is theft. Interest is theft. Insurance is theft. And if you are forced to live in a big, expensive home, then property taxes are theft.

1/24/23: 😠😠These are horrific actions by the County of Sacramento😠 on her own/Owned PROPERTY-I thought that was the point of owning your own Property-To have your own life without others telling you what you can and cannot do. Sacramento County, CA needs to be sued and this lady needs to come to Maryland and I'll take her to D.C. in front of Senate Judiciary and how they need to change the Freedom of Property ownership in this COUNTRY. I sent over 100 emails to Bernie Sanders over his two attempts to become president. He just wants to build a lot of public housing, a failed strategy. Even his own mother wanted to get out of her rent-controlled, Brooklyn apartment and into a home of her own. No one's mother or anybody else should be condemned to live in public housing. Andrew Yang was supposed to be the smart one. He just wanted to GIVE everyone $1000 a month as a universal basic income. That would NOT STOP THE HOUSING STEAL. Rent is theft. Interest is theft. Insurance is theft. And if you are forced to live in a big, expensive home then property taxes are theft. The freedom this woman is asking for is priceless and would not add anything to the deficit. The whole country needs our housing freedom restored so we can ALL live in a home of our own choosing and spend our money as we see fit instead of how someone else chooses and sees fit.

Buy the neighbors house and land and keep tiny house as ADU and rent out house for income! In the meantime your a great advocate for tiny homes that all our municipalities are WAY behind on. This is a solution to prevent homelessness when unable to afford apts or house. Best of luck and thank you. Tiny Hines are the way of the future!!!🏠🏠🏚🏚🏡🏘

This is all about affordability. She cannot afford to buy anybody's regular home. We need to STOP THE HOUSING STEAL. Rent is theft. Interest is theft. Insurance is theft. And if you are forced to live in a big, expensive home then property taxes are theft. Restoring our housing freedom is the only way to do this. When it comes to your home, it is YOUR home, your money, your life, your choice and nobody else's business. Period. Our Declaration of Independence says we ALL have the self-evident, inalienable rights to LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Shelter is a necessity of life. Bottom line, she should be free to be happy living in her small home. She is no threat to anyone's health or safety. This is NOT a police matter. It is financial slavery that has become normalized. Anyone can stick a sign in the ground that says, 'this is a restricted community' and then make any restrictions they please. That violates freedom and the golden rule, which are the bedrock values of our country. We don't say people can't live in a big, expensive home, so, we should NOT be saying people can't live in a small, affordable home either. Any patriotic, freedom-loving American should be outraged by this injustice. Where is the outrage?
