Hey I just read an article that came up in my phone about you and the hassle you go thru with the city... however it didn't explain. Much but just In case you didn't know, just put skirting around your home to cover the trailer tires and that way in case you decide to move or not deal with the city, all you have to do is move the skirting and go. Us country folks live in actual mobile home trailers on land in BFE😊. When .oat folks bought the land in the 70s, they just put a trailer on it till they could build a house, so after a couple decades of finally being able to do so, the county told them they couldn't so we get creative. They got building permits to add on to their trailer amd used their trailer to build around their house of course it kinda sucks its basically the same length and width but it's legal and when they got it mostly done, you just pull it right on out and finish building it amd then in a few more yrs you get another building permit to add on to that😂. No one should be told what to do on your own property yu pay taxes on. It's BS...

In my opinion, the reason we have all these hurdles and expenses associated with housing is so they can force you to participate in the big economic machine. Kudos to you for doing your part to help change this. As the homeless population continues to explode they will be forced to entertain alternative housing options and do away with these ridiculous zoning and code laws. I am pretty certain that more people die from exposure than from lack of adherence to these laws. I'm not saying we shouldn't have building codes or or zoning laws but most of them don't really have to do with people's safety.

Maybe I can suggest then that most building “codes” (aka restrictions) and “zone laws” meaning at least 95 % of them must be removed! .. as they’re (as you’ve said) only there to drive extra payments and expenses for an otherwise obsolete and insane bureaucracy only making laws for the maintainers of them to drive people nuts and weaken healthy free expressions of actual living. Rather bonuses of good will could be granted to those who do things non-toxic and biocompatible for and with the natural environment.. if any. Remember that most big tech and housing blocks build on industrial scales today are toxic for the natural environment. So the laws and codes does not help in that regard at all… quite the opposite as those also remove the individual to make op own and more eco friendly and affordable solutions. And with more free time and less struggle in life.. suddenly the individual also got ekstra time to meditate a bit and make better and more self sustainable solutions. Governments are only there as false insurance and “security” and in its core always been for mass mind control and oppression. Genetically speaking all mammals are genetically and intuitively capable of living at least a few years in the wild alone… and like how many percentages of the so called “civilized” “citizens” are capable of that nowadays ? Don’t forget neither that there are no real “control” groups in double blinded “science” (aka Zions) trails today… because the ones we do label “controls”/placebos … are all intervened with strict imprisonments that would make any free(= natural) mammal depressed.. and so whatever happens to the “controls” are subtracted from the results so that you never even see the symptoms of imprisonments .. as those become regarded as mere “background Noise” … think about it…

Not everyone can afford a traditional home. We are struggling as a whole. Our system needs to be flexible as many people are having to go tiny and for safety trying to avoid the crime in the cities etc. They need to be realistic in their understanding that everyone has different levels of financial ability. Love and let live.
@williambarnes2846

Generally, I agree with what she is about. I am not sure what she means by being allowed to live within our means. I can't go to Walmart and buy the biggie and best TV they sell on my terms. I may want the TV but I can't affored the TV. OTOH, even if she could get water access, it would cost over $10K just to get the access and I'm sure that doesn't cover monthly water bills. People do things without knowing what is ahead of them and then bitch and moan when they are unable to meet the challenges. You say it is her land but at some point she had to buy it. Perhaps a little research should have been in order. Her tiny home is in reality a mobile home/trailer. No matter what you call it, some neighborhoods don't allowe mobile homes. Considering that she is mobile, perhaps she should sell that property, a city lot worth a fair amount, and buy a property where she could have a trailer. I am in favor of her getting her property re-zoned. I DO hope the best for her but I hope others learn from her missteps.

Absolutely true! THIS is the American dream... To live within your own means, having the freedom from owing your existence to anyone, and to create your lifestyle in whichever way best suits you (within the confines of law, actual law). Obviously, you shouldn't go about stealing to provide for yourself (strange how capitalism kind of promotes that) and we aren't born into some caste system that preordains our place. At least, that's what I was led to believe this country is. But I guess humans are creatures of habit...

I was so shocked when I started looking at buying land (even very rural land) with a tiny house in mind. I really was very naive to think that if you owned the land, you were free to do what you wanted... nope. I learned very quickly that there are often minimum sizes for houses and that even camping on your own land without “improving” it within some time period is illegal in some areas. Incredible. I now live in a van, and I still dream of having a place to call my own one day, but our current system really makes it very difficult for people who don’t want a seven figure mortgage.

I just want to get away from city life, my neighbors be 500 ft away in all directions, me and my 🐕 , in a shed, connex, cement block, earth dome, earth bag, pallet house.. whatever I choose.. good luck my friends and be safe. Sometimes it is cheaper to live in a van. Owning a land can also be a burdan (Council, property and land tax) with restriction of what can be build or access to water. I am looking for the option of a tiny container home on a very small lot in the UK and this is so complicated and hard to find.

I have lived in an unincorporated desert town (Landers, CA) for about 40 years. I bought this land (2-1/2 A) with water and electric to the property, in 2004 for 6K. I can now sell my cabin/property for 100k. It’s ridiculous. But I digress. Being unincorporated, no one really monitors us desert dwellers out here. People build unpermitted, people live in 5th wheels. My taxes are $400 a year. We get rain and snow in the winter (@ 3400’) so rain catchment is possible. I grow all my own food. I built small structures by myself And still do at 80 years old. None are bigger than 300 s.f and the smallest are 10x12. They each have only one purpose, such as the biggest one is a kitchen, the smallest, a bedroom. Even though I am on grid, I built small stand alone solar, so fridges are on solar, etc. I have solar ovens. This can be done even in California. We need to have blogs where people can connect, come together, and share $ and resources.

A big part of the reason "traditional" housing has gotten so expensive is exactly because of the rules, regulations, taxes, and fees associated with those builds, in addition to zoning. In CO, we have "green energy" requirements on all new builds that add $70-100k to the BASE COST of a new house. That's astronomical! That means the base price of even a new condo is about $300k. It pays to get involved in your local city council and legislature. These bills always sound good on the surface, but you have to remember that the government doesn't have their own money--they only have YOURS. Make sure you want to pay for what they're selling. Think about how much it will cost--and how much it will cost your children.

@@dharmaslife Living in an HOA is the LAST thing I EVER wanted…but here we are, despite my best efforts to find a place that was Not controlled like this. I looked for roughly 7 years, in 4+ counties, for a place that might fit our complex needs, & this “bad flipper special”, was the best of the lot, & came w/challenges…one should have been a deal-breaker, but we were lied to about it, & it was too late to back-out. I TOTALLY agree w/what she’s doing! It’s Long overdue! If people like her weren’t doing this, the housing markets just keep getting far harder to reach for a huge portion of the public. It needs to be a much bigger movement! Right now, there are a few ADU’s in our HOA neighborhood, but, rules got made tighter, when the current mgt co. took over, & started inserting rules (conning the board members into agreeing or not seeing them), so, now, no one else can add an ADU. THAT needs changed, at least to allow ADUs of appropriate size on a lot…those w/bigger lots should be able to add an ADU & a shop/barn!…but currently, cannot. I’d rent one out in a second, if we were allowed to park a tiny house out back! On another bare parcel, the county refuses to allow living on one’s own property, unless they get 1)engineered septic (about $20k) (which requires a grid-hookup for the electrical involved😡), & 2) a permitted well (another $15k+)…which the 🤬gov. has put a moratorium on getting, trying to force public to accept metering of private wells (this has been a very quiet, but incessant priority project of several govs here 😡)…. So, we have not been able to really afford building there, for over 30 years….but the sell value has gone up…could sell it & let it be someone else’s problem…but…it’s paid for…I think of it as an emergency backup, so, kept it.

I'm going to bet, they ran water piping and sewer lines right in front of her house. Never left a T, tsp in joint, at time of installation. So now, to connect to the existing utilities, is excavation costs, codes inspection costs, etc. The fees to the city , to obtain a permit, legally at 50,000 just makes sure people of "lesser means" don't live next door to those with higher incomes. The old days of mixed income living next door doesn't really exist. There's a price of entry set by house Costs, taxes costs. Key is, what's affordable? What's your income get you. The answer Varies by city, state.

Good for you for bringing this issue to light. It's should huge problem in California. My area is Santa Cruz for the past 8 yrs. only because my daughter bought their future retirement home here. A good move as would be unaffordable now but a great investment. We added an ADU behind it and the hoops we jumped through, and the pre-build costs/permits were shocking in my Midwestern mind. After installing an in-floor heating system with hot water heater, an inspection was required with $4,000 up front. Naturally, when I went to pay it, I asked why it could be that expensive. I think the poor guy was embarrassed, and but what he said made no sense. The 'inspector' who came looked at the hot water heater system, never asked to see the panel in the house and said, it's fine. Not sure he'd even seen one before, I know the plumber hadn't but did an excellent job. Everything local governments say about affordable living and homelessness, is just talk. They really want homes that pay high taxes and to attract the wealthy and tourists. Good luck getting the services the affluent want, when service people can't afford to live in the area.

Otherwise, ppl will be pooping all over the yard and dumping gray water on the ground. How do you operate your mini split without being hooked up to electric? Because I know your solar isn't enough to run it or not for very long if you do.

Funny you mention Oregon. I looked at 1/3 acre along the Rogue River. I wanted it to use occ for RV camping. Nope. So glad we looked at local town rules. We could not use it for that purpose. We would need to build a house first. Then, we could park an RV for 2 weeks every 3 months. It was an expensive very oblong lot. The rules were too much and I did not purchase it. Since that time 2 years ago…the price has dropped many times. It’s a beautiful, useless lot. A house would be very, very narrow. I still would love to have that lot, build a small dock and fish..but I’m sure that would be against the rules too.

Thank you for sharing her story and especially her approach with the overwhelming and unnecessary frustrations she is going through. May support, patience and resources continue to be on her side. This is a very familiar experience with how bureaucracies get in the way of common sense more often than they should. Calling several departments to ask a simple question is emblematic with inefficient organizations. And to only then get a very unequaled response to her wanting water, and be told to leave the land she purchased in the neighborhood she chose, shows that whatever the intentions were behind the initial policies have only been lost and caught in such a tangled web of confusion and chaos.

Hi Robyn, (I hope she sees the comments) I love your story. I follow so many nomad channels here on YT. As you probably know so many of them have made the decision to live full time in their vehicles while others have no choice bc in the last 2-3 years they have been forced out of their homes due to increasing rent and many live only on their social security benefits. What truly breaks my heart is that our government would rather ppl buy homes even if they can’t afford it only to take it away from them. Our government and various agencies really do not care about THE PPL imo. I say this bc as difficult as it has been for ppl who lost their homes, apartments, jobs, spouse (a second income) have adapted and learned to live in vehicles but AGAIN here goes our government creating more and more “rules” forcing these ppl to move from where they have been parking. From what I’ve seen/heard ppl who live nomadically, especially those that were forced into it are running out of options. I know Robyn showed her IG page but it would be nice if she had a YT channel. I’ll be checking her IG. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story and being the voice of so many who don’t have one. I’m sorry for making this comment so long.

I love your tiny home! 💖 It's beautiful, spacious and very well designed. I'm 64 and interested in living in a tiny home but was shocked to hear of the rules, regulations and expenses involved in just buying property and preparing it to build a home. My son had intentions of building a new home on the property he bought and I was hoping to be able to have a tiny home there not far from him. Thanks for taking a stand for the tiny house movement. I think people live well above their means and waste money on things they don't need. The cost of housing is outrageous even in our area and I believe that the tiny house movement could help a lot of people that might otherwise be homeless. Thanks again for taking a stand.

As a city planner, who has worked in this profession for 28 years, I applaud your civil disobedience against exclusionary zoning, which exists in almost every incorporated city in the United States. A wonderful and courageous young lady. who's giving it the good fight. I'm with you 100% I get anger when I keep hearing these stories. I live in western New York and it's the same problem with affordable housing. Mobile Homes used to be an option however most of the parks in this area are being bought up by corporations and the rents are astronomical. Tiny Homes have no options because the only place you can park is in a recreational park and that's seasonal, (May-Oct). It's interesting that Churches can build and get a tax free statue and Corporate developers can build businesses, luxury condos, and apartments and get tax breaks, (not that they need it). Yet affordable housing options are not part of the discussion. People need to speak and Vote.

I salute you… It is taken a long time and many homeless camps in my state of Oregon and in downtown Portland it’s just ridiculous and with everything that’s going on with civil disobedience of fighting and breaking windows and affordability of homes and places for people to live. I sold my condo in Clackamas Oregon and moved to Eastern Oregon back in October 2018. Back then I could afford this but it was a lot to do it and I went from thinking about being in a tiny house on wheels, but I didn’t wanna live like a Vagabon gypsy hiding in plain sight… To a quonset hut, finally a stick house on almost an acre in town. I became a planning commissioner and this is one of the reasons. I was trying to do an Airbnb on my property but even that is zoned. Hopefully in time it will change. So keep fighting this fight.

Why should small/tiny homes be be relegated to parks? There's no reason to shoehorn them into spaces away from everyone else. People should be able to build according to their needs and income on land they own. I own my own home in a town. If something happened to it, and I wanted to build back smaller, I should be able to, although my house is very small now. Smaller homes on the same lot size would enable people to grow more of their own food if desired.

Then I see news reports about California's homeless crisis and it seems to me that the causes and solutions are readily easy to identify! 1. Loosen the legal restrictions on homebuilders and dwellers. This by far (IMO) is the largest barrier to housing construction and housing prices. 2. Introduce communities to tiny housing of ALL types... Shipping containers, stick-built tiny homes, skoolies, micro homes, high capacity apartment buildings, etc... Change the idea of what comprises a home!
