ABC15 exposes ‘astonishing and horrific’ conduct by judge, staff in major cases

ABC15 Arizona

Күн бұрын

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge and her staff mocked and ridiculed people during hearings and trials by routinely emailing each other cruel and obscene statements, jokes, and memes. The conduct happened in major felony cases, including high-profile capital murders. Emails and internal records obtained by ABC15 show no one was off-limits: Defendants, their families, jurors, witnesses, attorneys, even other court employees, and top court officials.
This is just part one of Dave Biscobing's "Dishonorable" series. For the full investigation and updates since this story aired click here: www.abc15.com/...

During my dads murder trial, while a graphic picture of the gunshot wound to his head was displayed on a projector, the presiding judge broke out into a bout of laughter after looking at something one of his assistants showed him. When I got upset and asked what was so funny, the bailiff told me to sit down and be quiet, the judge continued to converse with his assistant and chuckle. I never felt so mad and hopeless, and I'm supposed to call him your honor? Rise when he enters the courtroom? Not a chance. His name is John Knodell, Grant County wa superior Court, and he lost all respect from me that day

There are cameras in most courtrooms. It’s news cameras or programs like COURT-TV that most of them don’t like in their courtroom. Because they show everyone the true behavior of people that supposed to be upholding the law. If you’ve ever go into a courtroom just look up and you’ll see those little black covers over the cameras. Just like the ones in a department stores.

And she found herself a privileged career where she could do it for a living! I'm disgusted Otis bitched about other women's heavy periods and cellulite. Who the hell does she think she is? Nothing viler than a female misogynist. And that snake was allowed to slither off the judge's platform and into a prestigious, well paid job as a prosecutor? Disgraceful! Where is the accountability? Aren't these people public servants? Erin Otis brought the entire legal profession into disrepute, she must not be allowed to continue to practise law - PERIOD! Respect to the professional who was courageous and principled enough to whistle blow, knowing the system would protect her. In legal terms they call this judicial efficiency or economy. It's the same reason they will overlook large and broad injustices, while granting relief on sporadic technicalities. I’ve seen plenty of rude judges talking down on people and even calling them names in the courtroom, yelling, etc etc. Presenting it to the public in this way is meant to appeal to emotions, to create outrage about what people say to their coworkers privately!! Yes, it is bad taste. But everyone is human and people that see these atrocities day in and day out should be expected to never make a joke with a coworker? And if said coworker is that uncomfortable they can’t be an adult and speak to the person about it or their boss? They go to the media? What? I’m sorry but something tells me this case is being dramatized and inflated for the news. And what’s the purpose of that? To create agreement by the public to massive surveillance of everyone, everywhere, every moment. Let’s get the people angry enough to agree that people must be policed in every word they speak, and we will judge them on it, with no consideration of context or the big picture at all. It’s insane. Look up the smith mundt modernization act of 2013 and tell me that every single thing you see in the media does not have an ultimate underlining agenda. @@ceelow107 I think that everyone would like to believe an evaluation like yours (in a perfect world), which by the way sounds intelligent and reasonable - if it were not the system it is, where human / people make judgments and evaluations on other people based as much or more on (human feelings &/or opinions) than just written or case law, even though the people conducting the proceedings would like us to believe they are the most holistic and following the "rules" of the system. Also hearing about the "Birthday Party" thing sounded a bit bizarre even though most of us are not privy to extra or above ordinary events. I'm fairly sure of most people never ever hearing of anything like that. But then again I've heard of at least one wedding in prison? I remember a time before everyone having a cell phone when the only glimpse of a court proceeding was an artist sketch of the courtroom. Finally, I believe that most people avoid the courts and so called justice system like the plague for the same reasons / reasoning (as basically being presented herein). One of my few and far between experiences was to "contest" a speeding ticket where the district attorney read the same exact word for word spill to me as the DUI driver before me. The judge made a comment about knowing me and the Officer who issued the ticket - for all that means? In the end, and in spite of everything that I said against the ticket or being guilty, the judge basically said that I didn't really say that I wasn't "Guilty", and so he was going to charge &/or fine me anyway??? ...Before anyone says that is "Reasonable", it was the same exact judge that was overheard saying that he had previously scheduled another case, was going to allow the person to speak &/or say his piece about the case or incident, but had already evaluated the person as "Guilty" regardless of anything he had to say. Read Prejudice. And so, in the end I guess we are all just offering comments for points of view or opinion on the aspect of videos we've seen.

There needs to be professionalism. Also a judge should be unbiased and these memes show a bias. It's the only way you can absolutely control the outcome of the performance. It put a guarantee for those who have invested in the performance. Celebrities or people of high status don't disappear because of a drug problem or because of tax evasion. It is simply because either a. The contract ended and they will not renew it. b. Members of the club will not nominate or re elect or have canceled the membership. c. The amount of capital that brand has is not anymore on the level of the top forbes. Even though they are taught in business management class that you are supposed to be an absolute positive to the is loop positive to the environment and neighborhood and community as a business in the community for the community. Most judges don't deserve half the respect they're given.

Judge should be made personally liable for the cost of re-trials. Her conduct has the potential to cost taxpayers millions.

I feel this disrespectful person deserves to go to jail . She is just has hateful as the person did the crime. Someone needs to order her a sychitrists, counciling to find out why she has hate for people ? An did someone ,as her father, mother was absent in her up bringing. Or someone treat her cruelty in her up bringing.? Was she bullied as child or teen in school. Her behavior of her taking this out on clients or on defendents is obviously stems from her past. To me she is unhappy with the way her life turned out. Until she address what the hurt stems from ,talk about it with someone she trust , feels comfortable with ,only then she will feel that weight off her mind, 💔 heart. Also what helps years of hurt. Is do group counciling with others that share similar experiences as she did. Everyone in the room speaks out loud of hurt . An they listen. I know this remedy helps tremendously!! I was on the other side of I wasn't bully. I was being bullied, threaten insulted ,hit, choked, .spit on. I was filled with fear to leave my home. I was emotional wreck. An when I reach out ,made that call to , on my own and went to see a councilor, one sychitrists, did group counciling. After I went 3 counciling sessions. I started to feel positive about myself. pressure from bad to good in my mind . I know I wasn't a bully, although my x was of 23 yrs . This judge could change for the better. Start small steps , Sherry McGhee

Unprofessional. I will say that working in an environment being bombarded by horribly dark things can lead to a dark sense of humor that is , in some cases, a defense mechanism. No excuse for racism obviously !!

I'm getting real sick of these so called judges getting off easy. If anyone else pulled a stunt like this, they'd be fired, fined, and no longer able to work that profession.

Btw, a Judge is more axiomatically more powerful than a prosecutor.

@@therznocryinginbaseball1025 Most of us know that, anything other than a full disbarment is basically rewarding bad behavior. She shouldn't be in a position to prosecute anyone with that horrendous behavior.

Less than *_2%_* of all judicial/lawyer complaints nationwide get any serious attention, and only a fraction of those result in any discipline. Let that sink in..... Woman, you are brave! As someone who has been badly abused by the system I just want to hug you and thank you for standing up for what's right. I can only imagine how scary it was to say something. Trust me, I know. Your a hero in my eyes.
