Right to jail! Seriously, I'm impressed they found so many parts of that drone. Should be easy for DJI to identify who registered it by the serial number. Dude should turn himself in asap. Edit: I'm not talking about FAA registration. I'm talking about registering on the DJI (the manufacturer) website to bind the drone within 2 days of activation. The owner has to do this or it won't fly. DJI has provided this evidence many times for prosecution even if the owner did not register with the FAA.

It is a DJI… looks like a mini 4 Pro… It should be very easy to track down the owner. Been a while since I bought and registered mine, but I don’t think it will even let you take off until you’ve registered it with the FAA. The SD card inserts in the back end just onder the power button (the four dots and a button that are clearly visible in the video). There is more information about the drone in the battery compartment (also under the power button). Looks to me like they have the whole thing. This person is going to get the book thrown at them (and rightfully so. If you do even the slightest due diligence it is very clear where and when you are allowed to fly and not fly).

I don't get it. The drone shown in the news clip is a DJI drone... There was a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place at the time of the collision. DJI drones are "geofenced," meaning they will not fly in a TFR zone and, in fact, will either fail to enter the TFR zone or auto land.

Jailbroken software?
@edruttledge3422 күн бұрын

Are these photos of the same device? Are these photos even connected to the story? Did the device get lodged into the wing? If so, then it is likely the idiot piloting this drone will be identified and maybe we'll get answers to some of these questions.

The news is known for using "stock footage" for their stories. There is no guarantee that the images they show you are actually connected to the story. So that may or may not be pieces of the actual device suspected of causing the damage.
@95throughaschoolzone2 күн бұрын
Geofenced areas are hardcoded into the software. Unless DJI did a mandatory update to include the new TFR area, I kind of doubt that it would affect the drones ability to fly over the fires. TFR's are more of something that you just need to be aware of as a pilot, cant guarentee the software will do its job. Same thing happened with that guy who was taking drone footage of Bidens presidential convoy. Either way, its unfortunate that one guy gets to ruin it for everyone else.

I searched to find out how many gallons of water a Super Scooper can drop in a day. A 2023 article in KPAX News said 100,000. Using that estimate, four days of downtime means that 400,000 gallons of water will not be dropped on a fire that has not only ravaged the countryside and destroyed people’s homes, but has also killed, and remains a potential killer as long as it burns. I trust the drone operator is proud of him/herself.

Parents buy drones for kids, having no clue they are flying in the National Airspace. Licensed drone pilots know the rules and generally abide by them. But not always I guess. These events make it harder on the responsible pilot. My sympathies are with the pilot and crew of the scooper. A cockpit strike could have been a far worse outcome. Lucky lucky. We have leased two Super Scoopers in winter from Canada for 31 years. California has built up the largest fire fighting airfleet in the world. Gov Newsom acquired additional Fire Helicopters with night vision, and Hercules Air Tankers. One of these Tankers has been deployed to replace the Canada Super Scooper. However, no aircraft or helicopters can be deployed in high winds. And there can be only so many aircraft in the same airspace, or they crash into each other. Former Boeing... Super Scoopers typically fly in pairs spaced apart. They are very effective at stopping the spread of fires. There are other aerial tankers and different types of helicopters capable of lifting heavy buckets full of water. There will also be an 'Air Boss' directing Air Traffic. They fly at a higher altitude and have a big view of what is happening on ground and in the air. Planes and helicopters typically fly in clockwise rotation to prevent midair collisions. I live in Central Washington State in an area with very similar terrain, vegetation, and fires. On 4th of July, someone was using illegal fireworks in an area banned for using any fireworks. It started a huge brush fire. I live on an opposite ridge and saw fire consume huge swaths in minutes from wind and steep slopes. Fire crews protected structures, but no planes or helicopters were flying at night. Next day 2 Super Scoopers, other aerial tankers, and helicopters were dumping water to contain fire. By time fire was out, over 1,000 acres were blackened. I still recall those 2 bright yellow Super Scoopers plus other aerial tankers dropping water. I live in middle of desert, closest water source for planes was Columbia River miles away. These planes need a long water body to perform 'scooping' up water. If aerial tankers are dropping Fire Retardant (Red Color), they have to go to an airport to be refilled. Our airport was within a few miles. All planes and helicopters have to be refueled. Helicopters can land anywhere and meetup with fuel truck. Planes have to go to closest airport. The helicopters fighting fires in Southern California are flying 24/7. Flying at night is extremely hazardous. Helicopters can get water out of various sources; ponds, swimming pools, lakes, rivers, and Pacific Ocean.

To be clear, the damage seen is not structural in any matter. The aircraft is still safe to operate even before the new leading edge skin gets installed. The app doesn't exist any more since the mini 2, the picture looks like a mini 3 or 4. The logs arent uploaded to their server unless the operator specifically enabled the cloud sync function on the handheld. It can basically run air-gaped without an internet connection.
