In 1992, Hurricane Andrew developed an eye that tight but not quite as fast. The storm began in the east Atlantic Ocean, not in the Gulf, so it has a long journey that saw it disorganized at first, then rapid intensification before hitting Florida as a category 5 and then Louisiana as a category 3.

Major landfall area: Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Cuba. I remember the news. The Louisiana and Mississippi coasts were flattened.

There have also been models where it maintains Cat 5 until landfall. Just because it's never happened before doesn't mean it can't happen. It could also knock whatever force is supposed to weaken it out of its way.

@@RoseanneSeason7Exactly! This is why at landfall it will be a cat 3 hurricane. The cold waters closer to shore will slow it down from a cat 4 to a 3 and considerable less winds and storm surges. Still very dangerous in a mobile home. Cat 3 winds at 125 mph is no joke. I’m assuming mandatory evacuations for the greater Tampa area!

Category 5 usually happen over open water as when the storm enters shallow waters it should drop down the category 4. The area where the eye wall is going to come to shore is going to push water quite a ways inland depending on the elevation. As long as the storm stays compacted It's not going to have as wide of a destruction area.

He’s the only one I’ve seen so far underselling it. One should almost never speak in definitives. One thing I remember hearing many times is that Cat 5 systems can create their own environment and can be less influenced by other influences. I hope he’s right and it diminishes for sure, but I’m not sure if that’s the best message to send right now. The angle of entry and track before is rare.

Already old news in this video. Prediction is now 10-15 feet for Tampa Bay and all points between Anclote River in the north and Englewood in the south. That's a huge stretch of surge and unprecedented levels in modern times for the Tampa Bay area. For comparison, the 1921 hurricane was only an 11 foot surge. Serious business considering the size of the population in harm's way.

Is because IT IS. Puerto Rico, 2017 Hurricane Maria approached as Cat 5 and entered the island at 4. It’s 2024 and we still talking about it cuz hit us HARD. I bought the grapefruits in a Kroger in Louisville, Kentucky and they were very expensive; 3 for $7 but they tasted better than the Florida grapefruits and were very juicy inside and a dark pink with lots of juice!

I’ve been through many hurricanes in Florida but this one has a lot of people scared. Like Dennis said, the storm surges are the big concern. The barrier islands in Sarasota and Manatee counties just got leveled two weeks ago. A bigger storm surge is just going to be devastating.

Yeah, 4-6 degrees above average. It’s pretty weird, almost like the climate is warming, but that can’t possibly happen, it’s not like we’re adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

@@TonyTruppRegional variations. About a month ago they were saying the Atlantic is 2-3F lower than normal for August/Sept and they could not explain why. Definitely the drop in ocean temp is due to global warming. 😅

We need to turn Florida into a National Park or something. It's just too dangerous. It's a piece of land that STICKS OUT into the open water, it's an awkward piece of land and needs to be addressed.

It will hit bay as a 3..but accelerate to 4 and move north for brief time....very damaging surge
