Why do they say the fire is spreading at a rate of "five football fields per minute"?! It's a serious tragedy ffs, not a game, that's really insensitive. Why not tell us how many basketball courts could fit into the fire's footprint among the houses that have been destroyed? It's like you're not even self-aware. "This tragedy is almost as bad as a rotten Hershey bar."

Because it's 100 yards. It is a commonly used reference that aids in visualization of size, similar to saying "Olympic -sized swimming pools." Rather than just spouting off random acreages, this gives people a better idea of size.

@@ros375 Great point! I mean who could possibly understand what 500 yards means without relating it to a game where morons chase after a ball?! Only a genius could understand the phrase "500 yards" -- Americans would probably think that's how far away the moon is, when everyone knows the moon is actually 4,214 football fields away, obviously. All kidding aside, that fire is literally scoring five touchdowns every minute and that is definitely impressive no matter which team you support. Touchdown baby, you're on fire!

@@ros375 My point is that if they have to use a metaphor to explain what 500 yards means (why?!) then maybe don't pick a metaphor that involves chasing a ball. Surely there's something other than a football field that would help you guys understand distances. For example 500 yards per minute is equivalent to 17 miles per hour, which alone would be a bit more appropriate to the situation than how many friggin' sports fields. And more informative really, since fires don't actually play football, and it wouldn't sound so trivial given that people are losing their homes and dying.
