Chris Rock didn’t want Will Smith removed from the awards show or he didn’t want the police to take him to jail? Perhaps the producer misunderstood and that part needs to be clarified. His removal from the show should not depend on Chris alone but rather the academy themselves who knew he broke conduct.

They’re probably thinking it’s more complex considering Chris rock went off script. He didn’t really have to come after Jada like that so the producer is probably a little more hands off at that point and putting it on Chris because he’s the one who said what he said. I bet you if it was on script, it would’ve been looked at differently. It definitely would not have fallen on Chris it would’ve fallen on the writers and more of the Academy. This was strictly between the two men. Chris rock didn’t want Will Smith removed from the show, nor did he want the police involved. He just wanted to show to go on.

Look at the producer putting the blame on Chris for why Will wasn't escorted out. I said before just because Chris didn't want Will hauled out in cuffs by LAPD on live TV doesn't mean the Academy shouldn't have escorted Will out by security. Will Packer as a hired individual doesn't see he's going to be the Academy's scapegoat. They are lucky Chris isn't suing the Academy for perpetuating an unsafe working environment. It had to be stressful to remain there while his assailant was comforted in the mist of a breakdown, given an award and praised like a king with that standing ovation.

Not sure if this is a state-by-state thing or not. I can say, here in Pennsylvania, there's no such thing as civilians pressing charges. That's the purview of the police exclusively. Now, and officer MAY extend the courtesy to you to make the decision, but it is just a courtesy. If you didn't want them to press charges, they don't have to abstain. If you want them to press charges but they believe no offense has occurred, they don't have to push forward.

Just imagine standing there and staring at a full audience, in front of dozens of cameras, alone on the stage, and all you hear is silence. Everyone in the audience is just staring at you, and you know millions of people around the world are looking at you from their television sets in shock. Hell, you'd be the one most in shock; you just got assaulted and cussed at by Will Smith. So what the hell would you do or say? The fact that Chris could recover within a few seconds and crack an amazing joke to ease the tension is incredible. Who knows what would've happened had he decided to just walk off stage instead. What a champ. On the other hand, Will Smith thinks he can do damage control by calling up Academy board members to apologise before even getting on the phone and apologising to Chris like a man. Relying on a publicist to release a media apology statement instead of doing it himself. Chris Rock is twice the man he is. Pathetic.

Do not leave the call up to the one who was assaulted, especially minutes after it occurred. If I was Chris I would have said the same thing. As a victim you're thinking of diluting the embarrassment, making people believe you are fine, making others comfortable. These are classic thoughts. Fine, can't press charges. But that took place in the academy's house, streaming to families around the world, witnessing a blatant act of unprovoked violence. I work in a large hospital (company). If someone hired by the company (employee) is assaulted by someone, the company’s Human Resource department doesn’t ask the employee if they want action taken against the assailant, they just enforce the company’s no-tolerance for violence, harassment, discrimination, etc. policies. An assault against an employee is an assault against the company. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a highly profitable company. It nets in the neighborhood of $40M-$50M per year. For the 2022 Academy Awards Show, Chris Rock was hired as a Presenter (employee). An employee of the company was assaulted. There is no reasonable excuse why the company didn’t take swift and decisive action and immediately invoke legal action. Hats off the Chris Rock’s professionalism, but the company let him and all who value justice down. At this point the Academy is equally at fault and paramount to accessory to the assault.

Why they would put the weight of that decision on the shoulders of the victim is beyond comprehension. This would have been the moment to do the right thing by the victim and the remaining audience. Lets not mention, the whole world was/is watching...

What I understood, though, was that Chris didn't want to press charges. I don't know if he was advocating for him to stay, I think that was the producer's interpretation of it all. I’m a producer. This producer did not do the right thing. He didn’t need chris’s (the victim and his employee - not a friend in this scenario) permission to arrest Will (a guest - not a friend in this scenario). Chris was not in charge of the Oscar’s - he was. The fact that he let this go based on the employee’s feelings to guest relationship showed he’s a weak producer. He showed the world he don’t know how to handle violent issues properly under his command and he can’t separate friends from work. This isn’t a fight in his home between the two of them - this was a slap in front other guests in a place that was not his, in front of tv that broadcasted over the world, which he do not own. His job was to keep all this employees and all his guests mentally and physically safe. He failed.

The fact that the academy and/or academy affiliates are using Chris's statements (directly after the assault) as rationale for not ejecting Will Smith is absolutely despicable. In the fact they are slapping him again by trying to use his statements as justification. It's disgusting. When someone is assaulted, it's time for the people around the victim to step up and take control of the situation. Hollywood is a good example of when the Rule of Equity (ROE) supersedes the Rule of Law (ROL). Historically, the ROE was specifically created for the British Monarchy, where the Royals were given "Equity Points" (EPs) for their royalty, power, prestige, wealth, social status. The ROL, on the other hand, was created specifically for the non-Royals, the Commoners. The Royals were spotted certain EPs depending on their line of accession to the throne. The King or Queen was spotted infinity EPs, a prince or princess, duke or duchess, baron or baroness would be spotted a lower number from the King, Queen. But the Royals would have much more EPs than any Commoner. This allowed the Royals to rape, murder, torture, enslave the Commoners at will, since the ROE superseded the ROL meant for Commoners. In the U.S., there is no Monarchy, but there are those with wealth, power, fame, prestige, high social status, and their Equity Points are based on these characteristics. As a throwback to British Rule, the U.S. continued w/ the British system of having 2 governing laws: (1) ROE, (2) ROL. And as a throwback, in the U.S., the ROE supersedes the ROL. The Founding Fathers detested the ROE and worked hard to eradicate this in the U.S. legal system; they felt that the ROE was another manifestation of Tyranny. But the ROE crept back in via many SCOTUS rulings in the past two centuries. Hence, this is why some peeps are given special consideration not afforded to others. In Hollywood, Smith has more EPs than Rock. Hence, this is why the LAPD, Academy Awards honchos are giving Smith more consideration, leniency.

I truly believe that the reason Chris was so calm and “collected” was that he was still in shock. He shouldn’t have even been asked to make the decision to have him arrested or not. You can still be in shock days later, it wasn’t his responsibility to decide what should happen because he wasn’t in the correct head space to make decisions and of course he would want to have everything continue smoothly. But the fact that he was able to be assaulted on stage and no one come to help or stop it, they had a responsibility to HIM to remove him immediately. The security of the facility should have removed him right then and there and then the police could have figured out what to do. But to put that on to Chris isn’t fair or right. Let me give an example that is very different.. but could relate to his mindset. I knew a girl in high school that was assaulted by the star football player of our school. Our football team was about to go to the championship. She requested that he not be expelled because at the time, she hadn’t processed what happened and she knew people would be angry and blame her if he were expelled and unable to play in the championship. Even though it would obviously not be her fault, she wanted to brush it off because he was well liked by everyone. This should have never been her responsibility to decide what happened to him, he should have been removed because it’s the right thing to do. And I’m sure now years later she wishes she wouldn’t have said he could stay but that’s because she’s had time to process it. I think Chris kind of felt the same way in the moment, like no no just continue the show it’s fine.. don’t kick him out etc. because he knew many people in the audience and the world would have blamed him for that. But it shouldn’t have even been an option for him to have to consider.

Exactly. There were two separate issues here. Chris Rock chose that night to not press charges with the police. But, the Academy and Will Packer still had every right to remove Will Smith from the premises for his violent actions that totally violated workplace laws and the Academy's rules. They did not need Chris Rock's permission to do that. That was THEIR responsibility, not Chris Rock's. And furthermore, Chris Rock NEVER advocated that Will Smith be allowed to stay in the building. Seems to me it was the Acadamy's "responsibility" to step in... Could have made a great "scene" to instruct our children on "how to think and feel" but then, they'd have the legal system 's conflicting views to contend with! Somehow the WORD " Bullying " comes to mind too? Criminal and Entertainment Attorneys are going to have a great time with this one! Had Chris slugged Will BACK, the audience and the LAPD might have considered this all to have been a STUNT ? Perhaps if the audience had stood up and headed out of the auditorium, the LAPD could have had an easier time of deciding exactly what to do , also ? I don't think a person should be arrested (or slugged in the face?) for stating something he intended to be funny, that apparently was not ???Nowhere in the LAW BOOKS does it say that a person "expressing his right to free speech" can be physically accosted while the perpetrator receives no charges or penalty for their actions. END OF THAT STORY. Regardless, we all know Chris rock's JOB as a comedian is to have a great time with his audiences / Audiences do not have to "agree" with any statements made by ANY comedians, and many don't; But they do have the "right " to laugh. End OF SECOND STORY. Will Smith owes AT LEAST, the Acadamy, an apology But . Chris Rock would appear quite reputable, if HE would try to explain what he "really meant to say." THREE STORIES HERE are evident back and forth through the media. But is it not the "responsibility " of the LAPD, to "do their job also ? Duh, might be FOUR STORIES by the time this is "all resolved ?" "My Man Ain't no Middleman!" Fred Gold & Lynda Faye
