It's fun trying to imagine what is going on in his head; how he is perceiving the world. Ultimately it is an impossible endeavor for a "normal" human like me, but just try to imagine seeing every number in the world as a colorful shape, an equation as a beautiful painting. Try to imagine the level of detail that this guy's brain picks up in everything he sees, walking down the street, riding in a car, etc. Remarkable stuff.

JustAFocus I see numbers and letters in colour in my head, and it really is not that extraordinary or different from the average. He obviously has a geniusly functioning memory, the colours just give you a bit of a better memorization, for example Im almost never forgetting the first (and mostly second) letter of any word, so that by reminding the colour of the letters, i can remind me on it after thinking about it for a little while

If he can memorize 22,514 digits of pi and learn multiple languages, he would quite possibly come close to completely memorize multiple programming languages, this could lead to him not needing any troubleshooting or searching up something online.

I have synesthesia and while visiting Amsterdam a couple of years ago, I tried it. My synesthesia is visual audio, and it got HUUGELY enhanced! All sounds got mixed into any landscape I was looking at, like they moved along with any object from which the sound came from and was attached to it like it was its soul. It was really interesting to experience it so intense, but it freaked me out since I couldn't make it go away when it became TOO overwhelming. So I decided to never do it again.

There is something extremely important that we have to recognize and understand about the way he can find the answers so quickly. Basically every number has a shape and the negative space somehow gives him the answer. But how? This basically means the human mind can work in amazing ways we didn't realize. Makes you think about the possibilities if only our brains were formatted differently. The possibilities really are endless when you consider the seemingly infinite potential a brain can have for processing information and producing correct answers.

I wondered the same thing. But his understanding of those numbers is probably more nuanced and complex than he is capable of describing. It's like asking someone to describe an emotion with just a picture. You can't do it. You can try, but you will never be able to explain "fear" or "love" to someone by drawing a picture. They have to experience those emotions for themselves. This is how I think Daniel experiences numbers: very personal, intimate, and difficult-to-describe.

Calculating is nothing compared to math in itself. I was considered math genius in 5th - 8th grade just because i would be able to calculate in my mind, while other would take even longer with calculator. As time went by i wasn't that good at math as i was considered in 5th grade. Now I'm in university studying physics. I am general kid like everyone else. My mom thinks that i've wasted my skills, however she doesn't understand that calculation and maths doesn't have that much together in itself. Of course this guy has amazing abilities, but he is not math genius, just because he can memorize and calculate very well. He would be genius if he would solve those ''PI'' problems or something. And if HE IS GENIUS, it is not because of his calculating abilities.

They have good skills, almost entirely memory related, but in my opinion, a real genius is someone who solves problems never solved before, or who solves problems already solved in a different, more efficient way. Jean Pierre I think we have a different opinion on what a real genius is. And you seem to be a tl;dr guy, but i already wrote something, and i'll just add more. Imagine them (Peek, Tammet) spending all their life memorizing books about art and visiting most of the museums out there. Then they are asked to: reproduce a painting they saw and trying to paint a new one really good and innovative. Guess what? If they are not geniuses, they will fail in both the tasks, or surely on hte second one. And this is not related to art only, obviously, think of math...you can remember every formula out there and understand even the hardest theories, but that's something you wouldn't be able to do if you're not a real genius: come out with a new theory, or find a solution for one of the already unsolved mathematical problems. When they assign the Nobel prize, they always say "...for the great contribution to science/humanity etc"...but Kim was just a living google and Tammet is just a fast learner of new languages and owner of the record of pi, nothing useful to all of us. I'm not against them, i'm fascinated by their capabilities, but i can't really find a similarity between these 2 guys and people like Tesla, Galilei, Newton etc. In conclusion: being genius=/=being intelligent. There are no literature books i'm not able to understand/appreciate when i read them, or poetry, but then i place my hands on the Comedia and just heavy breathe thinking that someone was capable of such an outstanding beauty. 2:28 - If you read the Pi Numbers, and I only noticed this because I know the first 33 Digits of Pi, the ...3846297 part is wrong. It is not 3846297, it is 3846264, and it carries on, it is all wrong at the end, so I am not sure why they added that number.

I think the problem here is actual phrasing of the sentence. You do not use 100% of your brain at the same time and you cannot because there would be conflicting signals that would give you a seizure. If you look at brain scans you can see certain areas are active and other areas are inactive depending on what the person being scanned is doing. I wasn't saying we couldn't use all of our brain (100%), I was saying we cannot use it all at the same time.

The first 51 digits of pi are stuck in my head and it is as easy to recall as 12 x 12 = 144... I think once you memorise a few digits, you can do it with every batch of 5-50 digits and you can't forget them

It took me about 15 seconds to calculate 131*53 in my head. The way I did it was to split it up into a whole heap of simple calculations: 1) Half of 130 is 65 2) Therefore half of 131 is 65.5 3) Therefore 50*131 is 6550 4) 3*100 is 300 5) 3*31 is 93 6) Therefore 3*131 is 393 7) Therefore 53*131 is 6550 + 393 8) So the answer is: 6550 + 393 9) Which is: 6550 - 7 + 400 10) Which is: 6543 + 400 11) Which is: 6943

I'm a human calculator as well (I can't learn language like him unfortunately). No, I cannot remember all of pie, but yes, I can do 53 x 131 in my head, and find cube/square roots, as well as doing something like 75384 / 127, and I can carry out the decimals instantly. Never have I picture "3d shapes." That sounds kind of weird to me. I just see the numbers. I'd like to be famous for my ability too haha

No, I didn't actually "see" him solve it. I saw him explain how he visualizes numbers and their relations with shapes. The one problem they talk about is a multiplication problem that many children can do in their heads. Math extends FAR beyond arithmetic. They showed evidence that he is obscenely talented at storing information, but not that he is a math genius. Wake me up when he finds NEW results in math - you know, the thing that even the average mathematicians do every day.
