@@Jam-ku5tf i didn't come here with big money. I have good boss. I learnt how to invested from them. After i got 10 years green card. I bought a house for people to rent. And I was living at an apartment with 3 people so we could share the rent. The money from the renting house that i bought. Some of it went to morget. Some of it went to insurance. And some of that went to saving bank for energy( for fixing the house). I still had regular job. 25%(hang out with friends, my special one or vacation) of my the income from my regular job I spent on myself. The rest after my apartment5%. car (second hand3%).credit card (food, gas, close or what ever i need limit not over 20%) then the income. The rest of my % of my regular income i saved it in the bank. I had done that for 4 years. I paid credit on time, i paid the first house on time. I didn't have bad credit. I borrowed from the banks i bought more houses. I still kept my regular job. Well i didn't waste my money on Luxury items. Now i am living a house. It is not too big and it is not to small with my partner.

I was able to get into income based housing when I was living in upstate NY fast. I found an apartment for independent seniors and disabled only. I was only eligible to get in cuz I'm disabled. I called multiple complexes in according to Wikipedia, the smallest city in NYS and got in after waiting for 2 months. It was hard getting in but I finally got in fast cuz I was in an abusive relationship at the time and the manager at the complex was a good Christian woman and was once in the same boat with her first husband, so she jumped on helping me out fast. I pray that these people can get houses and off the streets fast! 🙏🏻

I grew up in a crackhouse, I’m 49 my parents are still addicts, in an out of prison, they’ve been addicts since I was 12. After experiencing the things I did, I never waited for anyone to feed or house me.yes I slept in my car, yes I went to a shelter. Yes I rented a room, you have to find that inner you that wants better. Wishing these people get a leg up but they got to do better.

I grew up in a situation similar to this and now own my own home. But the issue is that COVID (and the incompetent government response to it) has made things worse for many, many people, to the point that it might be impossible to get a leg up these days if you don't already have money to start from. I feel really bad for younger people who were born into similar situations as we were. It might be impossible to overcome in today's world.

You’re almost my moms age. Im 33. And from what I remember growing up you Could get like 2 bedroom apartment for like $800. You Could rent a room for like $300. You can’t do that anymore. Some places we lived when I was younger in the 90s are literally $1600 or $3200. So it’s not these peoples fault that they can’t find a home. It’s systemic. Inflation, lack of affordable housing, low minimum wage that hasn’t risen past $7.25/hr since 2009. This is not on them.

The people who are desperate need to apply for vouchers in the less populated "flyover states". Yes, they'll have to move to the state and live there for a year, but after that year they can take the voucher somewhere else. Also, they might not know that if they *already have a voucher* they can use it to get into housing in their desired city, even while hundreds or thousands of people are still on the waiting list. Why? Because, the waiting list is to GET a voucher, and people who already have one don't need to be on the waitlist. They can port their voucher into the housing authority of the city they want to move to and take any available unit whose rent (and maybe utilities, in some cases) is under their voucher limit. But, I understand that people in survival mode aren't necessarily making the most strategic decisions. But, they need to.

💔 I've seen those lists of available "affordable" housing and was shocked to find that the majority rented for more than "non-affordable" rentals. A social worker friend told me that actually, renters all paid the same rent, but the "affordable" or low income units were subsidized by the govt so the owners were paid much more for renting those units to ppl who couldn't pay hundreds of dollars more. This made no sense bc if you have sufficient income to pay say $500/ month, you wouldn't need to get a govt subsidized apt for wh the govt may have to pay another $700/month for you to live there in the same complex as ppl not subsidized!

In 1970, I applied for section 8. Eleven years later, they wrote me, but that time, I was making 15.00 per hour and DID NOT NEED IT. I know a person that got a section 8 and they have had it for over 50 years. Now she is in her 70's and looking for an apartment. Makes no sense to me, but who am I?

The reason the wait-lists don't move is once someone gets into public housing or section 8 they usually stay on the program for sometimes their lifetime. You can also pass it on to you kids. It's not used as a temporary stepping stone to financial independence like people envision.

At this point people might as well move and start looking at ways to make a decent living such as getting in the trades, starting a cleaning business or a KZbin channel. Public housing is a trap that will keep people poor and enslaved. We also need to bring back the multi generational households where groups of family members pool their money to either buy or rent while figuring out the career path. It gets so much harder once you get older and/ or are sick.

Trades used to be a reliable path but wages haven't kept up with today's cost of living. modest blue collar careers that used to provide enough for a small family is now a paycheck to paycheck job for a single adult. But these last few years I got myself a bachelor degree online, finishing up a master degree currently, and found another job that isn't lowballing me on pay. There are millions of well educated healthy and younger ppl out there who would sell a kidney to have a job that pays enough for housing utilities and food, who job hunt all day, everyday for years sometimes. And no, they didnt get degrees in basket weaving, nor are they drunks, druggie, bums or mentally ill. Its just a fact of life. Don't kid yourself. Be grateful. You are very right about doing for yourself. It's something ppl have to learn. When the old ways to survive no longer work you simply have to accept that and find a new way. I’m disabled and was trying to get out of an abusive home. Even back then, the wait list in Connecticut was over 6 years. Going back to work would have ended my SSI and Medicaid, as well as endangered my health. Luckily a friend found me a safe-ish living arrangement. I now live with other family. Like many things, it’s easy to judge until it’s you.

But you DID find a way, right? If someone is on a list 8-12 years, one has to ask "what have you done to improve your life?" There are ALWAYS options. You may not get your every dream. That's life. And yes, I'm disabled too. Things are difficult for about 98% of us who aren't blessed with gobs of money. But there are solutions to every problem. You were wise to reach out & find a solution. It may not be perfect, but perfection is hard to come by.

I lived in Connecticut back in the 60's, we moved around quite a bit and housing was easy to find and I ALWAYS remember how RAT infested it was, cat sized rats, big holes in the ground behind the apartments where we lived. What this news segment didn’t mention is that not only has there not been any public housing built in several decades, but cities have actively been tearing down public housing and not replacing it with anything. This clearly exacerbates the problem.

Depends on the area. I live in So Cal, and in my city they tore down this huge section of old low income housing and rebuilt on that land, and increased the number of units 5 fold. They've been building new low income/affordable housing buildings over the last decade. There is still a waiting list, and it takes years, but not this long. Before they started the housing projects here the wait list was 7+yrs, now it's down to around 3yrs or so. Hopefully they find a way to help some of these people find a home, even in the private market. My mom was on section 8 when I was growing up. Single mom, 4 kids, 2 jobs. Very thankful that she was able to find homes for us to live in, and I'm thankful for those landlords who willing to rent their homes to someone on section 8. But my mom made sure we took care of those homes, because we knew that they weren't ours, so we need to respect it, and take care of it the way we'd want someone to take care of our belongings.

Public housing is so dangerous. I lived on a bus line that went through it and every place someone was killed there were sidewalk/curb memorials put up. MOST of them were for children, the ones who were hit by cars and drive by shootings. Sometimes there would be so many w stuffed animals, cards, little kids notes, crosses, flowers, and the child's favorite toy, and ppl on the bus would be in tears at seeing so many. I think the cities tear the public housing down bc it becomes a blight and a disgrace in the community. And ppl not in that group feel like there is no purpose to build more bc the ppl don't change so the situation will just repeat itself.

There are hundreds of accredited online colleges as well especially if you need to be able to work AND go to school. Section 8 destroys middle class communities. As a landlord who actually lives in the community where I rent apartments. I don't accept section8. I not only care about how much they treat my units. I ARE HOW THEY TREAT THE NEIGHBORHOOD. How they will effect the area. Most landlords only care about how they'll effect their units, I care about how theyll effect the area as well. This is why it's so important to keep people who don't live in your area from owning property in areas. PEOPLE WHO DON'T LIVE IN YOUR COMMUNITY DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY. I'm on the section 8 waiting list, and despite being poor, I have excellent credit and am always helping out at our apartment building -- cleaning parking lots, sweeping, raking leaves, etc. I want my area to be clean and not run down. I’m from Philly and yes, the waitlist here is crazy. I’m not on the waitlist, I make too much to qualify. I’ve been living in Media,Pa ( a very nice suburb of Philly) for 11 years. I never paid over a $1000 for rent. The most I paid was $875, but in 2022 my rent shot up to $1200 a month. In December it will be $1300 a month. Yeah, I can’t do that, but that price is actually good for Media. The town has blown up and of course that means the cost of living has gone up. Now, I’m looking in parts of town that are the opposite of Media ( not as safe or affluent) because I just can’t afford to live here anymore.

We now have a ton of New Yorkers moving down here and development is insane in the city. For affordable housing most owners of those buildings are no longer renewing their contract to provide affordable housing. Why? Money. They can simply charge more for rent. There is an affordable housing project in West Philly ( University City) in which the owner has decided not to renew their affordable housing contract. Sparking of course massive protest as affordable housing in the city keeps drying up. If we were still where we were in 2005, I would be happy myself. That means I would have never been priced out of South Philly or University City.

I think all the cities and towns dealing with the massive boom in homelessness and all the troubles associated with it like crime, arson and cost of social services should also sue. There’s another 250 billion dollars in damages that need fixing. I’m pretty sure that’d really help shrink the homeless population. Most major drug dealers get life in prison. Right. If you have one and you know you are kinda struggling why would you think having 3 more would not make your time harder or are they looking to do it for more welfare money and a bigger apartment when they do get one?
