This is not really a big problem. The biggest problem now is many stores, are not even checking ID when you use your card, which mean, a person can pick your card and use it without any ID. Before chipped cards, many years back, everyone was asked to show their second ID.
@ODK321 Жыл бұрын
If someone has the card info with a name, they can always make a fake ID very easily. The clerk isn't going to know if the person has a fake id, they just look at it. I suppose you can run it to see if it's valid but once again, it's a magnetic strip. Also, there's no clerks out there that will put their life on the line to stop a criminal, nor should they. The companies and banks don't care enough to invest to try and stop it, why put everything on a clerk probably making close to minimum wage?
@Techknowverse Жыл бұрын
@@ODK321 you must have a criminal mind. Not everyone goes out and gets a fake ID. Let me put it this way, someone used a card with me, and I checked their ID, and it didn't match. You are not putting your life on line, checking ID. And if the card is stolen, you can only use for the day, as it will be flagged in the system as soon as someone reports it stolen, so how are they going to get a fake ID in 1 day? get real.
@IloveSituandbob11 ай бұрын
@@TechknowverseI find your outlook to be a bit dated. Im not intending to sound rude and hate saying it. unfortunately the way this world is heading bad behavior is growing rapidly popular. All the efforts of these people who cheat and steal from their fellow men could be doing good if they applied their brains to doing good. Knowing that death is a guarantee for every one of us and each will be judged. Why wouldn’t you want to be in good standing with our Lord and SweetJesus . Regardless it’s a good feeling when doing good. I don’t understand how people can put their heads on their pillows at night living this way. Miserable lives don’t like being alone.

This could be avoided by giving customers a coordinate card (a card with a grid of many different 4-digit numbers). Whenever they were to make a purchase, the POS machine could point the customer to a specific coordinate in his card (e.g. A1, A2, B1, etc), and the transaction would only be successful if the customer then enters the correct number. Would make thieves need to have both the credit card AND the coordinates card. Giving the customer time to report the theft of the two before any crooks can make too many transactions.
@gezzapk2 жыл бұрын
We have a small local bank that does that. They give you a grid card alongside your credit card for security but the major banks tend to not do that which is less secure.

To those that don't know, you don't have to use only a 4 digit pin. At many ATMs, you can change your pin number from the default 4-digit code they give you, to a longer one. 5, 6, 8 digits if you want. It works well when you have 2 digits the same so 84475 for example, since any mini spy cams won't think you have extra digits, since you're still pressing 4 buttons.

It's funny because in Europe when you open an account they ask for a phone number to link to your account. When you pay online, after inserting the card details, the bank sends you a unique security key via SMS and to confirm the purchase you need to insert that code too, or else the transaction won't go through.
@ShaiAtre8 жыл бұрын
why not use a system we have in India called One Time Password or OTP....India is a high risk country for theft but very lowest at credit card crime because of strong banking system....with indian credit cards you can only do a transaction with OTP that is sent to you thru mobile SMS service which is encrypted service and cannot be easily intercepted, to complete ur transaction....this is for online now but even at merchants place u can implement one time password to complete the transaction.

America is outdated eh. in Canada chip and pin have been used for years. same with tap
@KILLKING1107 жыл бұрын
we have chip and pin its just that its expensive for companies to implement because most places have literally upgrade there register systems just to be able to use the chip and pin system and so its a very slow process and no the government is not giving companies money to switch to the new system because it would make the feds go broke.

I was just in a store in Montreal 5 days ago and they didn't even have a credit card terminal. They were using a machine from the 80's. Then they called the credit card company to approve the purchase. Something I have nerver seen but people would tell me about. In the US, I can pay with my credit card even to buy a Hotdog. The poor girl at the store looked a bit frustrated, but that's the way that store works. So, is not that the US is outdated and Canada is oh so advanced. Each store is different. eh Heck, now most of the time I pay with my phone... Even in Canada I paid with my phone in few places.

I worked for Verifact in Toronto, who makes swipe terminals, and the security software was 'borrowed' from the receptionists desk whilst they were waiting for the chip manufacturer rep to pick it up. So turn the swipe terminal and look for the word VERIFACT.

What about the 3 digit code on the back of traditional cards? All the online sites are asking for that 3 digit code which isn't on the mag stripe.
@thevontrapfamily58558 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that is why fraudsters will test cards on various websites, attempting to crack the code by sending as many as hundreds, possibly thousands of transaction attempts until they finally get an authorization. Some even set up fake businesses via identity theft to do nothing but test cards.
@raz60378 жыл бұрын
Apparently there are less desirable sites that do not ask for the CVV code. Also some very questionable sites that offer services of acquiring cash from credit cards without the use of the CVV. Security is become very difficult, the best methods all involve prevention by having the consumer stay alert to there transactions.
@raz60378 жыл бұрын
But the Chip isn't much safer either, smartphones can be used to steal all the credit card information needed just by being near a persons wallet or purse. Then thanks to all the wireless acceptance for paying they can use there phone to pay with your credit card anywhere they want, and even if they ID the person they won't know it isn't you because the information on it doesn't show your name or anything.

***** The chip is actually called a R.F.I.D. which stands for radio frequency Identification Device. it emits a short range (inches) radio signal that any Bluetooth enabled device can with the right software intercept and record. Then its as simple and replaying the recording back to a credit card machine that has the phone swiping capability or even creating their own R.F.I.D. with your information on it. The best method of prevention currently is some shielded sleeves and wallets they make that block radio frequencies and thus prevent a person from acquiring your cards simply by proximity.
@jimbolove5669 Жыл бұрын
RFID Skimming is easier then magnetic skimming now, on top of being easier to skim RFID Chips, it can be done somewhat wirelessly, 2 feet away without a faraday cage around your card, and you could be a victim of card theft while walking in any store. but with magnetic strips, you had to physically use the card with a tempered card reader for them to be stolen. so the magnetic strips are slightly more secure then RFID Chips in the updated cards today.

All debit and credit cards should require a fingerprint or iris scan for businesses and refuse transactions when being used at locations from telephones and computers that are not on the list for the user unless verified by answering some key questions properly. This is an easy thing to make work, but it could be initially expensive. Or, I could be very wrong with my idea about this all together.

Now they have heat detecting apps or devices. The heat from your fingers transfers onto the key pad. So they can see the digits that were used. So after I CHK the scanner for falsies, I cover when entering my pin then I hold my hand down on the pad. Transferring as much heat to confuse anyone coming up behind me with said device. Sucks it ain't safe anywhere. My bank pings me if a penny is moved from any of my accounts. I have a family ID protection program with a credit union. I pay like $4 a month and it covers my entire household.

Three years ago, I found a skimmer planted on a Wells Fargo ATM. It was a half dome green colored overlay that went over the card slot. I removed it and contacted the non-emergency number of police and gave it to them. Since that time, Wells Fargo ATMs has shifted towards machines with card slots that are completely flush against the face of the ATM.

Also in the UK the law was changed, that Banks have to provide proof the account holder did NOT do the transaction, as so has to refund in full if it can't. From before the account holder had to provide it was not them. Also Contactless in UK, is 100% no quibble guarentee if it was not you. The Bank has to take the hit not the accountholder. Current 2021 conractless in UK went from £45 to £100, but Boris wants it on £1000. If you use an Applepay device to do contactless then it £unlimited contactless. But problems have become people charged, £1300 instead of £1.30 due to network errors on the Eftpos.

Theft crimes? Okay, well then you'd have to give all the government people, bank people, and any retail store out there that MASSIVE prison time, cause they're all thieves. The world revolves around money, and finding ways to get money, and money is the root of all evil. Government officials steal from your hard earned tax money, bank people steal the little extra cents that you gain from interest, and retail salesmen sell you a $2 product for $2000. Then this thief comes along and steals $10 from you and you get pissed off, but don't get angry at all the other people I've listed so far that have stolen hundred and thousands of dollars from you...

That isn't real. That isn't how that technology works. You can't just download an app and scan credit cards through wallets. SOME credit cards have a proximity feature which allows you to use them without swiping by placing the card near a reader. Those readers use RFID and phones do not have RFID readers built into them. So that part of the video was mainly to make people feel more vulnerable so they are more likely to take steps to protect themselves. However it is possible to do this with some custom hardware and software using a small device but not with a cell phone and an app.
