I loved The Monkees and the Beatles and still do. I had a huge crush on Micky. In the early 70s I started a fan club for Micky. I somehow got connected with his grandmother Mene Johnson. I wrote her all the time. She was a sweetheart. I also wrote Micky. He was so nice. Wrote his sister Coco ans his wife at the time Sammi. A lot of love between Micky and his grandma. TheMonkees were put down a lot re their music...but people need to remember they were hired to play musicians in a tv show...they were not given a fair deal. I still love them!!!

at that time, pop groups weren't valued much--so many people were in line to do it--it took time for the music industry to mature and get smart, that happened in the 70s and continues to the present day--music biz is truly an industry-and you are groomed, packaged, promoted etc, to extract all the money possible from the public--you have a lifespan and suddenly it ends--usually when you can't sell records anymore, or your bookings drop off--ever notice how much country music today sounds almost all the same no matter who sings it? you don't see too much originality out there, one rare case is Kacey Musgraves from TX, Dixie Chicks were great --they might return eventually to the charts, and Jack Ingram, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison--all from TX--these folks are great and rarely get on radio--so sad

I really don't if Micky is underrated as a vocalist because both he and Davy shared the lead singer duties of the Monkees. Additionally, he also had a wider vocal range: he was more of a tenor and could hit higher notes; Davy was more of a baritone. RIP Davy Jones

I think it all depends on how tired each are and where and when you meet them. Everyone has bad days. My encounters were Mike and Peter being super nice to me. (Peter spending about 20 minutes chatting), mike being a perfect gentleman. Micky at another time signed an autograph without saying a word to me and Davy signed one without looking at me or speaking. But like I said, everyone has bad days.

I was what would be called a 3rd generation fan, I think--when they had the 20th anniversary reunion during the 1980s. I'd thought that it was like, magic. I'd see the Monkees--as a trio--nine times in concert between 1986-2011 and Davy perform solo twice as well as meeting him in person twice. Davy presented himself as warm and genuine and that he truly loved and appreciated his fans. Not taking anything away from his band mates, he performed in concert with such energy, enthusiasm and interaction with the audience that one could mistake him for a person half his age--when he performed with Micky and Peter about 6 months before his passing, Davy was literally running around the stage! I think that this incredible energy and as Micky said, no indication of illness, really was what was shocking about Davy's death. Because I'd met him, this was very hard to believe that he was gone...I'd cried for months. Rest in peace David Thomas Jones..."I'll love you forever."

At least he talks about the family and how the death was unexpected unlike the interview with Peter
@matthewronsson6 жыл бұрын
True, but Peter was respectful and their relationship (Davy & Peter) was more a working relationship than friends. He and Davy butted heads at times (literally), and they had some contentions, but that doesn't make either one a bad guy. As far as not talking about the family like Micky-how could he? He was not Micky and they didn't make personal visits to each others family. We don't always get a best friend level relationship from work, and this was no different. Peter kept it simply as 'I have varying degrees of love and respect for all of those guys', so don't expect more than what it was from Peter, and that is being genuine. So first ask: what would I say about someone I worked with for a few years 40+ years ago, knowing the above reality? Would you candy coat things and pretend it was just like the TV show? or show the class Peter did by keeping it real, simple yet still respectful?

@KV-85 контрмера Well, sadly Peter had some conflicts with Davy and Micky on their tours. Peter had beaten his alcohol addiction and he said he found it hard to be in the road with Davy and Micky, who he said were drinking a lot. I suspect Peter and Davy might have had professional disagreements as well in terms of how to present the music. No disrespect to Davy, just repeating Peter's comments.

If I'm not mistaken, when Mike Nesmith "re-joined" the Monkees after Davy passed, when they were preparing to get ready for a gig, Micky said he would look for Davy and then he'd realize he wasn't there and would never be there again. Very sad. I'd met Davy in person about 2 or 3 times; he came across as someone who was warm-hearted and loved and appreciated his fans.
