Fame did get to her, only it was self-destruction, not madness with power. At least from my perspective. It seems like she genuinely didn’t want anything to do with fame. Amy Winehouse literally simply wanted to create art, which may have actually been too damn good

I met Mr. Bennet maybe 30 years ago in Omaha. He was apparently doing a show or shows there. Cannot remember the of the downtown hotel but I was sitting at the bar around dinner time having dinner, it was not real busy and Mr. Bennet asked if he could sit next to me. He said eating dinner alone in hotels gets old and he figured Omaha was quiet to come out. He asked if I was a local and I was then and a bartender in Old Market and what was good on menu. Told him I came specifically only for a couple things on menu. He ordered, we ate, we sat there and talked for hours, he did not have show that night. He was one the nicest, most genuine, most interesting and kind people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I grew up with my parents listening to his music with Sinatra, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, etc and was always a fan. God bless the man. He is a national treasure. Peter is waiting at the gates to greet him with open arms.

I wasn't a fan of Amy's until I saw a video of her sing with Tony Bennett. She is the modern Billie Holiday in the way she sings and in her tragic life ending too soon. Apart from her singing, the best thing about watching her sing with Tony Bennett, is the way she looks so adoringly at him.

Google Amy singing "Valerie" at Glastonbury live in 2007. Listen to her do "Teach Me Tonight" and just about anything else. It's been a few years, so maybe you're now more familiar with this absolute incredible talent, who prior to destroying her life just might've been the best of them all and certainly rated above Gaga!

Bennett said she was the most natural jazz singer he could remember working with. And her record company had her going out, singing those self destructive songs she’d written for years after the album was released. They used her, and her father shamelessly used her, and her ex-husband destroyed her, introducing her to Class A drugs when alcohol had been her drug of choice. There were only a few people who would have had to power to take her away to some remote place where the public and paparazzi couldn’t get at her, and where she couldn’t get her hands on booze and drugs, but they weren’t allowed anywhere near her. Just a tragedy, all the way around. Her parents were the worst for somebody like her, too....her mother was such a weak, indecisive, and easily manipulated parent, and her father was a loudmouth controlling creep, a sociopath, who felt he deserved to be as “big” as Amy was. And her brother couldn’t stand her, long before she became famous. It’s just a horrible tragedy.

Met Tony Bennet in 2005. Saw him perform at the Pescara Jazz fest in Italy. Saw him perform for €10...amazing show. We were drinking Prosecco in the back row... At the end of the show I screamed out "Tony Fly me to the fucking Moon!"... and he played it. Swear on my life. I then finagled my way backstage... he passed by and we're both from the same "area" of Queens; i lied and said "Mr Bennet im from Astoria too (im not but bot far away either ) can I get a picture? " He said "Ok kid make it quick I gotta go"...still have that picture... one of the best nights of my life

“Live long”. It sounds like simple advice but it’s so profoundly wise. Get off the hamster wheel and just stroll. Take the long way. No need to rush, there are no timelines, there’s no “too old” or “too late” (that’s all stuff we made up)....find the balance and make things that will last beyond a trend or a moment and enjoy the process. God I love Tony Bennett.

This makes me really sad. Drug addiction is so hard and happens to those of us who are broken and sad. I am healing from my years long opiate and stimulant addiction. There is help. Unfortunately most help isnt the best help. You have to keep advocating for yourself to find the proper help and for some people that's just too much to do if we don't have a support system helping us.. it's hard enough to want help but when the system is broken it makes it even harder. And when you are ashamed traumatized and embarrassed its almost impossible.. we need to fight for better treatment and care for addicts without stigma and shaming

I read a lot of these comments about people going to tears. Well, I could understand it but I'm too old for that . . . except . . .The first record I ever bought was Tony's in the early nineteen fifties; 97 cents plus tax, a 78 rpm disk. Two tunes but the side that caused me to spend my teenager's money was, "Someone Turned The Moon Upside Down" and I don't believe a lot of people have ever heard of the song. The "B" side was called, "I'll Go" and I'm even more certain that fewer people have ever heard it. But I could recognize talent, even as a teenager.
