Eric Campbell takes us on a journey to a place few outsiders ever get to experience - the place some say could be the trigger for the world's next major conflict - the Spratly Islands, smack bang in the middle of the oil-rich South China Sea.
In an Australian television exclusive, he catches a series of boats to reach the remote chain of islands and coral reefs that are claimed by no fewer than six countries - China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.
Many of the so called "islets" are simply specks of submerged rock in the middle of nowhere, but have been built up by competing nations over the years in order to bolster their claims of ownership.
There are military forces from different countries living on different islands, often within shouting distance of each other.
They're probably the most contested islands in the world. It's believed the undersea bed in the region is rich in oil and gas, it's an important shipping lane, and there are vast fishing grounds to be exploited.
"We call our island group the submerged Saudi Arabia of the Philippines", the mayor of one island tells Foreign Correspondent. Mayor Eugenio Bito-onon runs a municipality with just 150 residents - Kalayaan, which means Freedomland in the local language.
Posing as fishermen, Campbell and his crew go to Ayungin Shoal, where besieged marines live on a rusting, scuttled ship on the submerged reef.
Chinese maritime forces attempt to stop them in a high-speed chase.
The crew managed to reach the shallow coral before the vessels could block them.
They found a group of hungry marines living on fish they catch on the reef as Chinese ships circle the reef 24 hours a day.

China is causing conflict World Wide, they want everything and don't want to pay for it. They are circumnavigating Australia's Northern Neighbours lending these impoverished Nations millions of dollars knowing they can never repay the loan. Idiot's in Canberra are doing nothing for fear of upsetting these Raiders. It will eventually come to a head, the only one in the world that is standing up to China is the United States, in Australia Politicians and Government are terrified upsetting the Chinese will collapse our economy, the question that is not being asked, how can one of the richest resource Countries in the World be put in such a position by the Chinese?.

The constitution limits military funding after despot Marcos was overthrown . Kinda like Japan after ww2 and even when demoncrats wants to rid of 2nd amendment rights in 🇺🇸. They were trying to improve social services before military. They need both - it’s years of mismanagement, corruption after ph got its independence. They also suffer from brain drain like what is happening in hk but the real tragedy is the disintegration of family as most mothers works as domestic workers outside ph since ph could not attract foreign investments due to the high level of corruption in ph. PH is indeed a paradise lost. Sometimes I feel that it would have thrived better like hk if 🇺🇸 never left like Guam . Much like HK not wanting to be under communist 🇨🇳 CCP, PH faces same threat as HK due to high debt from communist 🇨🇳 and really bad governance by 💩du30

Well done to Eric and ABC Australia for highlighting what the 6 nations are doing concerning the heavily disputed Spratly Islands. Sadly very few people really care what is going on because they have their own problems at home unless of course you live in the area or there is an oil tanker crash and everything, all the reefs and the fish in this delicate eco system are wiped out by an oil slick. Yet the eco system is being trashed by the Chinese anyway with their 24/7 remodelling of the ocean floor, surely this is what the United nations are for which is to protect the environment so why not declare that the entire place a world heritage site and protect it for future generations. This is all quite ironic especially when you look back to the days of the British and their empire building in previous centuries, when they were land grabbing and taking valuable resources and turning them into cash. As for the small detachment of Philippine Marines on the scuttled ship, we can only imagine what they must do day after day and what happens to their non disposable waste, the plastic wrappings of their supply parcels and all their poo and wee that builds up day after day, I doubt that it's stored on their rust bucket of a ship, presumably it all goes into the delicate and sensitive surroundings.

@mas360 No, China doesn't own any of them, but as they got a far bigger economy, airforce and navy there are not much the rest can do as long as they not standing together. Vietnam needs Brahmos missiles and the will to use it against Chinese ships and bases in Vietnamese territorial waters, the Philippines need a new government that are willing to stand up to China and to have more US help to do so. Malaysia needs to support the other two. But first, they all need to agree on who own witch islands. Unbelievable that they all don't see that their division are the reason the PLA navy can get away with what they are doing. India, Thailand and the US need to enforce a naval blockade against CCP China.
@mwtrolle
@mwtrolle 5 жыл бұрын
@mas360 But Vietnam can't battle the PLA Navy in the open sea, their subs can at best deny the complete control if they dare to fire that is. Vietnam need Brahmos missiles to even the ods. Singapore has the biggest navy of any Southeast Asian countries. They are not that far behind Thailand in airpower to. Indonesia has a bigger military spending then Vietnam, but they are less capable I believe.
@mwtrolle
@mwtrolle 5 жыл бұрын
@mas360 They possibly could in India joined in. Anyway, they could blockade all ships to CCP China and hurt them immensely. If China came to them and they had the advantage of shorter supply lines, ground-based planes, missiles, and radar systems, the PLA nave would be in trouble. If the US joins in with its allies it's not even a contest.

Yep, those guys just nip it in the bud by banning comments on every single video. I always forget and scroll down to the section only to be greeted by “Comment Section has been disabled” and get mad all over again. Here in America where free speech is the biggest deal ever, rightly so, we really don’t know what to do because all social media companies are censoring viewers in various ways. It truly is a a nightmare. The algorithms Google uses manipulates the search results. A Harvard researcher has estimated these manipulations could affect our elections but 2-10 million votes. It’s estimated that last election millions of votes were steered to Hillary.
@blameTheDane
@blameTheDane 5 жыл бұрын
@@jennymisteqq695 If that true, it just goes to show, that no mater how much google, facebook and microsoft pushes some candidate, the people vote will prevail and people are getting smarter every day. I don't think social media will have an as great effect again, this next election, what will have an greater effect, is independent civilians letting their voice be heard, either on youtube or other platforms. And in there lays my biggest feat.. People idolize people. So if eg. Logan Paul goes out and says vote for Bernie, i think it will influence more votes than any adjustments to an algorithm ever would. And that scares we, because it's easier to corrupt a single influencer and his team, than it's is to corrupt 10.000+ programmers and engineers to probe and adjust a search algorithm to an subjective choice.

Yes, Philippines do not have the budget to upgrade its defence. Most of the budget also goes to the deployment of soldiers and police to zones where communists and extremist groups exist. Sad thing was when china stopped vessels with food going to one of the station in the sea. It seems they really want them to die.

This rusty old warship can still be fix and restored, bring welding equipments metal, iron, cement, sand gravel & lots of paint and roller brush etc. generator. In a little quantity until they can fix it in 6 months to 1 year. The chinese pla or chinese coastguard can not do anything they will just watch in a distant. There is a Mutual Defense Treaty between Philippines and USA. any country who will attacked and invade this Islands. there will be a huge problem.

Very good reporting, but China used those island as far back as 2000 years ago, seasonal fishing. they only lost hold of those island during the WWII with Japan taken the islands away. Best solution would be if all the countries involved got together and shared the wealth between them, You can also not blame China for what they are doing, When you look at the USA and what they are up to by building military bases in all but a handful of countries, they are trying to surround China. many of these countries the people do not want the USA bases. To understand why you only need to look at the history of the USA bases in Japan

The summary didn't take sides. I was thinking that the piece didn't adequately label China's claims as expansionist, illegal, tyrannical, and not to be trusted. About the only good thing China's presence there accomplishes is to bring the other nations in the area into closer unity. The CCP is a blight on humanity.

Everyone's bullying need to stop including the Bullying of the USA. Maybe people should go back to growing food, having fewer babies, and begin to do away with money and move to a contribution type societies. Money to survive seems to be the main issue to survival when people have survived for millions of years with out money until some sneaky guy decided money was the way to have power over others

Fillipinos are beautiful people from my experience. you cant help but feel there warmth and wish the best for them this mayor is what a politician should be. he cares deeply for his place and people. i hope Duterte remembers these poor exploited people when he sells the rights to china to remove the oil and spirits the coin into an off sure account asian smaller nations should stand with china. looking at the way it has lifted its people out of poverty. at least they are giving back. ok they are not with out fault. however compared to the US gov leaving Americans in poverty, sickness and ever growing disparity. at least chinas commi government gives back and is transparent. where as american communism promises the world but delivers scorched earth. history doesn't know how to lie

The incompetence of the Philippine government over the years and over the presidents that have come and gone have put the people in this video in a pitiful and as a whole ( referring to the dispute) in a laughable manner. The Philippines is surrounded by developing countries fighting for the "submerged Saudi Arabia" for its oil reserves but the unfortunate reality is the Philippines claims to a territory that is beyond its abililty to sustain and protect. It should focus on its internal problems and forget about its ego on the Spratly dispute. Nothing will change anyway if it had won the whole thing..

This is of course a story of imperialism and its self circuitous logic of entitlement, it is a similar story to that of the US , of the British empire, and of any empire that had ever been..... the rights of the poor is to suffer as a consequence what they must. History is a story of empires rising and of empires collapsing which is where we are now...empires dictate the rules. ...but for the fact that this planet we all live upon and are dependent for our existence reflects the indifference of our humanity ..and the disconnectedness from what it is that sustains and affirms life.. if humanity indeed life in a broadest sense of diversity is to survive it will only be when the severity of what we collectively face becomes completely unambiguous. When we have exhausted all other options that we then take the right option which we should have done to begin with. It is sad to consider the shifting politics of the worlds stage , left and to right and to back again, represent the death throes of a beast unawares of its own condition.

Wan King ; Well I don't know if I see it that way but you're right, that would be a perfect time for the Yanks to get in the middle of it all. My thinking was that the Yanks could use that as an excuse to move in and then hand the islands back with their support to keep the Chinese at bay. Would also ensure that they kept the Chinese in their own area and stop their expansionist agenda...

China got veto power so it's limited what the UN can do. The UN is a fail organization. Only the US has to power to stop the CCP with there military, and they are not angels either so who can force them. The EU has economical power to force the CCP to if they were willing to use tariffs or sanctions, but as it would hurt there economy as well as Chinas then they just sit on their hands.
