Trapped in the volcano: How the cruise of a lifetime turned into a deadly nightmare | Four Corners

In December 2019, the Ovation of the Seas left Sydney bound for a 12-day trans-Tasman cruise to New Zealand.
The luxury holiday promised great entertainment and the opportunity to get up close to the country’s renowned natural beauty.
But things quickly turned nightmarish when a group of day-trippers and cruise ship passengers were trapped in the middle of a volcanic eruption.
47 people were inside the White Island volcano crater when it erupted.
21 were killed.
19 of them were from the Ovation of the Seas.
Four Corners investigates what tourists understood about the dangers of visiting New Zealand’s most active volcano and whether more could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

The most extraordinary survival story belonged to Jesse Langford. Despite suffering burns over 90 percent of his body during his run through the crater, by December 30, the 19-year-old was able to write a eulogy for his father, mother, and sister. From his hospital bed in Sydney, he watched a livestream of their funeral, at which his words were read out. The past weeks “have taught me that when times are tough, you have to find that inner strength that pushes you to persevere,” he wrote. “You always have a bit more in you.”

what they really failed to mention is rescue teams were told not to rescue it was the bravery of untrained pilots to rescue who they could. The rescue teams came hours after they were needed.

Hats off to the private pilots, seriously. They're heroes. But rule number one of being a rescuer is to assess the situation and make sure your crew isn't just going to end up being more people that need rescuing. Even so, they were there within 3 hours of the eruption.

What an incredible response by the people on that other boat. The captain could have legitimately decided to get his own passengers to safety rather than turning back, and the passengers could have reasonably challenged his decision to turn back given the uncertain risk to them. Instead these people did everything that they possibly could to ensure the safety of those who could still be saved, and the emotional comfort of those whose injuries were non-survivable. I hope those people know what heroes they are and that they are getting any psychological treatment they may need for the lasting effects of trauma.

Out of curiosity . Also d a doctor friend of ours, practicing in Iran in the seventies (living there too), never thought that the Iranian revolution would happen while his whole family was with him. Another friend during my college days found himself in the middle of the Greek revolution. So cautious were my husband and I even with our parents thatI was so angry at my mother who traveled alone in Europe when she was 87. To make a long story short, my Mom had fun being independent . She visited my sister in Germany and enjoyed a whole year there. A whole year away from her grandchildren was so much deprivation so she decided to go back tManila. Shortly after , the volcano Mt Pinatubo erupted The polluted air was too much for her lungs even though the volcano was 6 hours away from where she was living. She died a few months later. We can't predict the future. Revolution s, and disasters happen when they happen. We can only pray that God will be there to help us when the need arises.

I’ve watched several news stories and documentaries on this, and this is the first time I’ve heard that Royal Caribbean didn’t notify family members as soon as they knew the names of those that were in the hospital. If this is true, that’s unforgivable. Imagine denying dying people last minutes with their loved ones. I can’t imagine how angry I would feel if they had left me sitting in some room on the ship while my family member was dying in a hospital room.

Not necessarily true. An island without plants or animals simply means a recent disturbance occurred. It can take decades for an environment to go through the phases of succession and be suitable for life on land. It can take longer for islands as seeds must be artificially planted or be carried by wind. Without plants, only bacteria and semi-aquatic animals such as seals can live on the land. While the island has been known to have natural reset disturbances, it's a part of nature and takes time to recover. However, it's both the cruise company and victim's own negligence to do research. 95% Royal Caribbean, 5% victim negligence. Once can argue it's 100% Royal Caribbean, which is can be particularly true in the court of law, but negligence of the victims also plays a role. The level 2 warning should have been enough for RC to recognize that it was dangerous, as well as the lack of life as well as the volcanic warnings, to at the very least tell possible adventurers the risks. Very sad accident. For an active volcano, the victims should have been notified of the risks as well as doing a little research on their own. But long story short: your comment isn't necessarily true.

I've read so many times about people in North America not knowing about this happening... I'm from Canada and I heard about it the day after it happened. I kept following the news about it. I remember reading the head line "hundreds of square feet of skin being sent to the burn victims" and that resonated with me so much, like it made me realize just how bad of shape the survivors were in. Then I saw documentaries interviewing survivors and heard the whole story. I couldn't believe how the first responders were told not to go and the only reason for some of the survivors living were the two pilots who went there on their own. I couldn't imagine the horror that was experienced that day, some peoples last experience ever. My heart breaks for the survivors and people lost that day.

You know what makes me angry..... If they taught proper geography in school and stopped the climate emergency nonsense education, everyone there would have been able to look at that volcano and see it was about to erupt. If you look at a Volcano you should see all grey, white and black surface area. Take a look at the video again and you will be able to see for yourself, the huge yellow areas on the surfaces. The tour guides know what it means and should have stopped trips but don't want to lose money. When there is yellow on the ground it means magma is very close to the surface, its sulphur dioxide and a very good warning that things are heating up and about to blow. They should stop trips for a few days when they see it and check if its spreading rapidly because unlike Yellowstone for example, this is a tiny island and does not have the pockets that yellowstone has to release the heat gradually.

Jessie Langford had 90% burns and was in the group saved by the pilots but before the pilots had arrived Jessie got up left his family who where in serious condition at the time and stumbled on his own to the coast to try to get help and survive. Absolutely incredible will.

The amount of victim blaming in this comment section is awful. People don’t seem to understand that they weren’t told that the volcano was at a level two which is a very dangerous level for a volcano, UNTIL they were on that damn island and it was pretty much too late. I doesn’t matter if a steam eruption, people knew that the volcano was at a level two. They were never asked to sign a waiver taking responsibility. Not being told anything for what to do in a situation like an eruption, and such a brief saftey information, that is the cruise company’s fault 100%. The passagers were there to enjoy the sightseeing and have a good time, not be the ones warning everybody or really looking. They are expected to be told the tour has to be closed because its unsafe because of the volcano. The company put all of those lives in extreme danger, and took the lives of people who didn’t deserve to die, especially in such a painful and tragic way. It was not the victims stupidity, rather the companies. That is who you should blame. You should have empathy for the victims and survivors.

Brainjock the people “looking for money,” as you’ve so unempathetically put it, are families that have lost family members. Regardless of how you spin this story, the cruise company is at fault. Not disclosing the danger levels, not providing comprehensive emergency plans in place. Not to say that going to an active volcano poses its risks (I, for one, would never do so), but the poor souls who went on this excursion were NOT informed fully of the risks of this particular trip. And honestly, if a member of your family went on this excursion and died, would you not be pursuing legal action considering the circumstances? If you say no, you’re either a liar or don’t care for your family.

When you go to another country on holiday, it is YOUR responsibility to educate yourself on the dangers. Never rely or entrust your safety 100% on persons other than yourself. If you choose to go onto an island, with an active volcano, and no escape, you should know the possible consequences you may face. Nature won't be controlled, and accidents happen.

@@Kairos_Akuma i feel like people writing that don't live anywhere near active volcanos. they exist in a lot of places, and hiking on them is usually pretty safe. even the beautiful mount fuji in japan is an ACTIVE volcano. dying in traffic is probably more likely than dying while visiting an open to visit volcano. but an active volcano can never be 100% safe. if a volcano should be free to visit with warning 2 is another question. one i would answer with no.

Just to clarify the majority of NZ has volcanic activity... there's 48 volcanos just in the Auckland region, all dormant and another major one you ferry to for day trips is called Rangitoto. Its part of NZs tourism. Alert level 2 did not mean an eruption was about to happen just that activity had picked up. Places like Rotorua have steam literally coming out of the ground as you walk through the town. You chose to go visit an active volcano, you know the risks involved. The cruise ship should have informed people but at the end of the day its a privately owned island that one family has decided to profit from by providing tours

I did a day trip to Sicily to visit mount Etna, we got off the boat and onto the coach for the trip up, and it was when we were almost at the top of Etna that the tour guide told us we could only go to the south peak as the north peak 'had a little eruption yesterday'.......we were not told anything about the eruption until we were on Etna, luckily, there was no eruption whilst we were there, BUT these tour companies need to at least inform people of the real time situation BEFORE you go, at least then it is down to the individual whether they take that risk or not.

My boyfriend and I were there about 8 months before this happened. No way in hell would I have taken the tour if I was aware an eruption could happen at anytime. We booked this tour from the same ship, ovation of the seas that departed from Sydney. We booked it online via royal Caribbean website perhaps a few weeks before we boarded the ship. There was 1 photo of the island with a paragraph that maybe had 4 lines with a very basic description along the lines of “charter out by boats to volcano, light walk, see dolphins on the way”. Why not I thought. Sounds awesome. We were not given anymore information until the day of the tour. We had received tickets from the ship that had few details on what to wear and bring. “Closed shoes, (no other dress code specified) camera, Sea pass card, lunch will be provided”. We eventually arrived by bus to the jetty, get off bus, and straight onto the boats. I never signed a waiver. On the boat ride (about an hour I think) they did give us gas masks and a a quick standard safety brief. Still no warning of imminent danger or potential threat. I had basically strolled through this whole process blind. Once on the island it became very real that this was no game. It was hard to breath even standing on the shore. Sulfur got into my throat and was causing much irritation. My gas mask broke about half way into the tour. We got so close to the crater as did the whole tour group. I honestly cannot believe they let people go there. Royal Caribbean is 100% accountable. I will never forget where I was when I heard the news of this eruption. My heart goes out to the victims and their families ♥️ I can’t even begin to imagine what they have endured

brooke v that’s very bad about the waiver. When I went 5 years ago there was a waiver to sign, and it was helpful for appreciating the reality of the risks and the personal decision, but I wasn’t with a cruise trip. When I heard about the disaster, and that it was a cruise excursion, it did make me wonder if things may get blurred over in that situation. NZ culture is more haveago than health and safety. As I was working in Nz I was aware of that and could prejudge the brochure accordingly, but cruise ship passengers wouldn’t have that advantage. I took my mum on there. Agree. I was on a tour on dec 4 five days before the eruption and didn’t learn of the level 2 warning until we were on the island and even then the guides didn’t think it was a big deal. Consider myself fortunate and lucky. Sorry for those who died or injured on dec 9

I can still remember hearing about this from my family members who had friends on the cruise. It was absolutely awful. Thankfully their friends weren’t badly injured, and compared to the other victims were so so lucky. I’m from Australia and New Zealand so I felt the pain from both of my countries. For the captain and passengers to turn back after having witnessed the eruption was beyond selfless. That takes courage. To then tend to such terribly injured people on that horribly long journey back in the way they did speaks volumes about their character. And the same goes for the helicopter pilots who chose to fly straight into the throat of that volcano despite the obvious risks.

I’ve been to active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands but we were all VERY properly versed on it all even in the airport. I’m sure there was an assumption that it was safe, they trusted operators, wouldn’t have gone if they realised how likely it was but they made a choice to go to an active volcano. The survivors, their family members, their widows, their orphans and their friends will watch this video and see what you have said. It has already happened with me seeing it. Please remember that. It’s heartbreaking to see such terrible comments directed at the survivors and the deceased. Many of you may think you have valuable comments or edgy opinions that need sharing, but you should think before you post. My in-laws were in the blast and are still very much suffering every day. Over 65% of their bodies were burned and even had to have parts amputated. They will both need to go in for numerous surgeries in the next few years, possibly for the rest of their lives. There will be lifelong effects on their mental health as well. Coming on here and seeing hurtful things like “all the survivors should be dead and they deserved it for not reading the fine print”. When was the last time you read your terms and conditions? Have you ever?

Thank you, I'm horrified with the unkindness of some of the comments. I hope your in-laws can find some peace and healing, it must've been an horrific experience, not only to live through but to continue to deal with. I don't blame those who went on the tour, many activities carry risk with, and we still do them despite knowing the risk. I do think that perhaps those in charge of taking people to the volcano should've at bare minimum made them more aware of the increased risk at that time, and really probably suspended tours there until it had settled down more. I hope the mistake is learned from and this never repeats itself.

I worked in a Senior capacity as a nurse in Melbourne's main Burns Unit 35 years ago. Nothing has ever effected me since in such a way, and I have seen and experienced much distress and grief since, from a nursing perspective. The courage the survivors, victims and rescuers have demonstrated is a true testament to the ability of the human spirit to go thru, endure and in some cases live with yet, move on from unimaginable horror and true grief and tragedy for sooo much loss in all aspects of their lives. The bravery of those first pilots on their rescue mission cannot be understated, and should be rewarded, and/or awarded. With what seems to be a good chance of another eruption, whilst the clouds from the first eruption still billowed, they didn’t wait to be told, or even asked. They just went, no questioning, no hesitation. At considerable risk to themselves. What outstanding character they have. As for the tourists who assisted, and who returned to the island after only just having missed being caught by the eruption? They’re heroes. No one could possibly imagine your pleasant day out could end up comforting the dying, helping the injured, and rescuing other pleasure seekers. As an Aussie, I’ve now got yet another reason to be proud of our little sister across the sea, and the people who inhabit her. Not enough credit, maybe not any, was given to these people in the immediate aftermath, and I thank 4Corners for making us aware of them. In future when I hear talk of the eruption, or think of it, it will be your efforts, pilots and tourists, that I remember. You’re all heroes, and I’m proud of you. I followed the eruption last year when it happened. It was considered illegal to go there at that stage. It is strongly discouraged even in 'safe times. Even scientists dont go there at all. The tour company whent ahead anyway. Hence they were the only company left still offering tours

I can remember standing on Papamoa beach as a child in the seventies and witnessing a massive eruption from White Island. The sound of the explosion was something I will never forget. The plumes of Ash went hundreds of feet into the air. I remember at that time no one was allowed to go anywhere near it. There was an exclusion zone around it. I remember regular explosions from White Island in the seventies. I have since left New Zealand and was very surprised to even hear that such a dangerous place had become a tourist attraction.

I was in New Zealand in the early 1980s and I'm pretty sure that you couldn't go either on the island or within a certain distance of it. I certainly wasn't aware of any sort of tour of the island being available. I wouldn't have been interested in going to such an active, dangerous area anyway although my partner at the time definitely would have, which makes me think that if there had been tours available I would have remembered because we would most probably have ended up in an argument over him wanting to go and me not wanting him to.

Two comes to mind, The sherpas assisting inexperienced mountaineers to climb to the top of mount everest at both their own risk and their client's risk because they have the cash. But i would also blame TV stars like the late daredevil stever Irvin who made dangerous activities a new fashion trend when caution was the rule before him.

What makes me really upset about this tragedy was how rescue efforts were called off by communications. I understand that the situation was dangerous, and no person should be forced into that situation, but responders should have been given a choice. I feel like we see so many times where bureaucracy/precautions get in the way of life and death situations. Like we saw with the people on the Phoenix and the Volcanic Air pilots, that there are people who were willing to risk their lives to help. And it’s a shame that the more professionally trained people weren’t given at least a chance/choice to. (I’m trying to read up and learn more on this part of the story and always welcome to hear other people’s thoughts)

@@ixa.m9915 actually i believe volcanoes are most likely less dangerous then driving. if people are stopped from going to the volcano when it is at high risk of eruption then it unlikely people will be hurt. plus although eruptions are extremely dangerous when they do happen, it is avoidable but being out the area when it is likely to occur. With driving, no matter where or when you are never safe. even if you aren't in the car. at any moment a drunk driver could crash into you. or a car could malfunction and lead to a collision. or a driver of a large vehicle could decide to change the song and in the few seconds of doing so, not realise the cars stopping in front and smash into them completely crushing the people in the car between the vehicle and the car infront. (thanks college for showing real footage of that last one as a safe drive awareness thing and scaring everyone too much) no matter what everyone is never safe.

Definitely. Even during such a tragedy, quick thinking, putting their own lives at risk to assist in the rescue of others; such hearts of gold. God help them through their traumatic experiences. A sad event, including the delay in recovering the last persons left behind, and the heartbreak of the results of such a decision. Everyone here has already said many times over what I had wanted to say so I'm going to give a different take on the place. What I find fascinating about this is looking at all the different types of rock. Everything from brick-red ancient iron-rich seabed, granite slabs pushed up to 45 degrees and then another pile tilted the other way, white limestone, volcanic lava frozen in twisted shapes, piles of ash, seabed slate broken and tilted every which-way and everywhere the sulphur boulders that have been shaken loose and tumbled down the slopes during ancient and recent tremors. Just looking these conjures up awe when considering the incredible power and energy it took to bring them all to the surface and mix them in such a small area. I know the underwater scene is 100-500 times larger, after all the volcano rises from the seabed and slowly narrows as it climbs so the amount of surface area is huge, but trying to visualize that is pretty daunting and when you have the real thing in front of you it seems pretty insignificant. By the way I would have jumped at the chance to go, I've always been fascinated by volcanos, but even so if someone had told me there was a good chance it would erupt I would have said "Well I guess I'll save that adventure for another day since I'd like to survive this one".

It’s not the victims fault. Active volcanos are usually safe, until they’re not. Active volcanoes are tourist attractions around the world. Millions visit active volcanoes every year and survive and are safe. This is not the fault of the victims. The tour company should have shut down tours for the day, or told passengers about it BEFORE leaving the ship and arriving on the island

I've been to Yellowstone and it's pure beauty. There is always a risk. But knowing the risks is important. The victims definitely should've been informed it was at a level 2. I've been to yellow stone: it's quite beautiful actually. the difference between the two is that yellowstones caldera/ crater is about 2 miles wide and the destruction would be even worse also yellowstone eruptions are wayyyy less common Ps I don't want to sound annoying when I wrote this, there's just a lot about it
