Here are a few fun facts about Yngwie: 1.) He taught himself how to play guitar by watching his older sister play violin. 2.) As a teenager, he absolutely adored classical music and lists some of the titans of classical as an influence along with Jimi Hendrix and Richie Blackmore.By far, his favorite classical composer is violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini. 3.) He currently resides in Miami, Florida and you can follow a trail of guitar picks (ala Hansel & Gretel) to his house. 4.) He is a die-hard Ferrari enthusiast and has mentioned a few that he's owned. Yngwie was the man who really got me into the neoclassical style of playing and the first guitar I ever bought was modeled after his. My guitar teacher (and friend Jon) had a friend who built a replica of Yngwie's signature Stratocaster in his (the friend's) garage and Jon bought it from the friend. Jon then offered me the guitar for $100. Seven years later, and I still have that guitar and absolutely love it, and named it after a very good friend of mine. I also added a few stickers to the body, one for D'Addario strings and the Super Smash Brothers logo.

Well, you obviously picked the wrong video here. Far Beyond the Sun was on Yngwie's first album "Rising Force" which released in 1984. Back then he played it looking like a slinky rock god. It blew my tiny little mind when I heard/saw it in 1989 or so (I lived in a podunk little town in Oregon and had no idea that any sort of rock was happening in 1984). He wasn't wearing all the jewelry back then and he was a bit ... um ... slimmer -like all of us were 30+ years ago. When I first began playing the guitar, it was because I wanted to play this song specifically. I never reached that level. But I did use another of his songs, "Eclipse", for warmup. There's a section in "Eclipse" from about 1:25-1:52 that you can start to play slowly and build until you match his speed. That was a game-changer for me. It's not technically complex, you just have to repeat it until you can go fast as hell.

Malmsteen is crazy talented. He is one of the few shredders I don't get tired of listening to after 5 minutes or so. His phrasing is so clean. And you can hear the emotion in his playing. Anyone that says otherwise is tone deaf. The one thing he is lacking is a song writing ability. He could have been more popular back in the 80's if someone had teamed him up with a decent writer and singer.

Welcome to Neoclassical shred! It was about time, guitar licks (literally) and all. :) :) ;p Yngwie has a deep back catalogue, including numerous hits with vocals (the guy WAS prolific, and he had some pretty strong vocalists on his side back in the day), so at his least extravagant he still produced catchy and coherent songs. But really, as you said, such guitar music (while admittedly being a matter of taste) can stand or fall on its own. :) Thanks for he react!
