Breaking the two desires and the rememberance of death by Sh. Abdal Hakim Murad
Abdal Hakim Murad graduated from Cambridge University with a double-first in Arabic in 1983. He then lived in Cairo for three years, studying Islam under traditional teachers at Al-Azhar, one of the oldest universities in the world. He went on to reside for three years in Jeddah, where he administered a commercial translation office and maintained close contact with prominent ulama from Yemen.
In 1989, Shaykh Abdal Hakim returned to England and spent two years at the University of London learning Turkish and Farsi. Since 1992 he has been a doctoral student at Oxford University, specializing in the religious life of the early Ottoman Empire. He is currently Secretary of the Muslim Academic Trust (London) and Director of the Sunna Project at the Centre of Middle Eastern Studies at Cambridge University, which issues the first-ever scholarly Arabic editions of the major Hadith collections.
Shaykh Abdal Hakim is the translator of a number of works, including two volumes from Imam al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din. He gives durus and halaqas from time to time and taught the works of Imam al-Ghazali at the Winter 1995 Deen Intensive Program in New Haven, CT. He appears frequently on BBC Radio and writes occasionally for a number of publications, including The Independent; Q-News International, Britain's premier Muslim Magazine; and Seasons, the semiacademic journal of Zaytuna Institute.

I have listened to this entire talk multiple times now, and each time I am left with even more awe than before. I think it's because deep down we all know we should be trading our junk with sheep instead. We forget we are wayfarers. At some point in this talk, the Shaykh calls the Rihla audience 'captivating' as they are so engaged, but I don't think he realizes that this is not due to their credit but his. Ya Rabb, grant him Firdaws.

The point he made during the end about sacrilizing every aspect of our life is so incredibly important. Every moment of our life, especially in times of solitude should be spend, in whatever practical capacity, in the remembered of God.

I'm watching this video to keep my mind away from sad things. Today, I watched on the news that a Japanese aid worker was killed in Afghanistan by unknown gunmen. Dr. Nakamura had been helping the Afghan people for 13 years. And he was given the honorary citizenship of the country. I'm so sad that my nafs makes me listen to shaitan whispers. I hope this lecture help me take my mind away of negative thoughts. May Allah punish a severe punishment to persons who killed Dr Nakamura. I know that many people die in my country, Afghanistan, however the death of this Japanese aid worker has saddened me deeply as if someone has killed my father or brother. May Allah forgive and bless Dr Nakamura. Ameen!

i m glad the Shakhy is aware of the current surrondings in hajj/umra! The saudis are turning Hajj/umra to be a popular tourist destination, they are trying to degrade it like other normal western cities. People come back from their Hajj/umra talking about the hotel service, 5 start hotel, food, big buidings, getting married ( boasting to people) etc. I hear all this from westerners when they go on holiday. So in reality, all 3 sacred mosques are under occupation

In my studies trying to come to grips with ego, as it is so much discussed, I really liked my Ethiopian friend defining basic ego as "the mind being aware of itself." As such, we all have an ego, and it certainly isn't necessarily a "bad" thing. What we typically define as "bad" ego is the mind identity that imposes limiting beliefs (from which come our addictions, etc.) upon our "true", deeper self, which I understand as being soul, a part or focus of God consciousness.

This Shaykh is giving a glimpse of how it is to be awake in a 'world' that is constantly putting us to sleep . I think this is the kind of talk that needs to be listened to time and again with intervals of weeks or months in between . Perhaps on one of those occasions of revisiting this teacher's teaching you may get a glimpse of what lies beneath the outer veneer of physical reality . A perspective that will alter permanently the experience of your reality .

Don't eat meat Hussain rather like the false prophet sipping milk and chewing dates. God only gave Noah permission after the flood to temporarily eat meat due to the flood. A muslim not having the scriptures would never know this. Certainly you posted a silly second hand account. God has a way with liars no doubt now you will have the looks of a pig.

Where in the Qur'an does it ever say: Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet? In the Qur'an, term "Sunnah" is only used to denote God's sunnah. Why are we so misguided? My question for those who purport to support the so-called hadeeth narration: Why are you picking and choosing? For instance, do you agree with stoning an adulterer to death? Do you agree that the Prophet beheaded hundreds of Jews? Do you agree that the prophet inserted a hot iron rod into the eyes of someone? These are so-called narrations in the books of sahih hadeeth. Time for Muslims to get rid of the garbage called hadeeth tradition.

You have an excellent model in the Messenger of Allah, for all who put their hope in Allah and the Last Day and remember Allah much. (Surat al-Ahzab :21) You should accept whatever the Messenger gives you and abandon whatever he tells you to abandon. Have taqwa of Allah... (Surat al-Hashr: 7) No, by your Lord, they are not believers until they make you their judge in the disputes that break out between them and then do not resist what you decide and submit themselves [to you] completely. (Surat an-Nisa`: 65) O you who believe, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when He calls you to what will bring you to life. Know that Allah intervenes between a person and his heart and that you will be gathered to Him. (Surat al-Anfal: 24)...many n many
