Abdomen transverse CT imaging anatomy

Radiological imaging of the body is both very useful and fascinating. Let's look at some of the major structures within the abdomen that we can find when looking at a stack of transverse (or axial) CT sections. MR images would look similar structurally, but a little different in terms of detail level and shades of grey.
We'll find the major veins and arteries, and spot the major organs of the abdomen.

I sure do love your videos. Especially the cling wrap one. I taught myself to find the abdominal aorta on my ct scan because they told me I have atherosclerotic disease especially in the Abdominal Aorta and it had calcifications. Actually, they didn't tell me. I read the report on the CD. They never tell me anything. I knew breasts get white spots that are calcifications, so I knew I was looking for something that had white calcifications and branched off into 2 other somethings to make the iliacs. My aorta is speckled with white spots all the way up and down. It's not too terrible, yet, but terrible enough I know I'm a jerk for eating Oreos and other bad foods. My liver is 20 cm and my aorta is way, way bigger than this example, but so is everything on me. Even where this hair thin looking vessel comes off the Aorta up high it has calcification at that meeting place. That skinny vessel may be important and it wouldn't take too many white blood cells martyring themselves, paying the price for my sweet tooth sins, and I'll have to answer to God because it's kinda unforgivable to sin against your own body with cigarettes and tons of coffee and junk food like I do. Says so in the bible. I still have so much to learn so I'm glad you and other docs made these videos. Your cling wrap is one of my top favorites, though. I don't know how to turn on that levels marker thing. I just look for the organs and my huge ventral hernia. Sheesh! My abdominal Aorta is almost as big around as my spine! This one is so skinny! :D

If that patient has GI symptoms (nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, or flank pain), there are some issues here, that radiologists notoriously overlook in imaging and report as "normal". Second problem: referrers take the radiologist's report far too much as "everything" seen. No, it depends on protocol and indication and....eyes and experience. Don't think you have had imaging coming back "fine", that that was really the case. Good thing, get a copy and have a look yourself AND reevaluated by some other radiologist who is more experienced in whatever you want a focus on. That's why good vascular surgeons look through the images themselves, good neurosurgeons never give a cent for the report. Yet you will encounter ample doctors who "believe the radiologist department" blindly and can harm you by doing so. Overlooking is a big issue. Big!!

Hi Sam, is this is indeed arterial acquisition at around 30 seconds after contrast injection, or actually portal venous acquisition at 60-80 seconds, and how can I better differentiate between the two? My mindset is because the bifurcations off of the IVC are not well appreciated, but then again they very slightly are, so does the arteries retain contrast longer than the veins even at the 60-80 mark?
